SR20DET Exhaust manifold heat shield removal blocked

I am very new to picking at cars and this is my first time trying to get to the exhaust manifold. Problem is the heat shield is being blocked from coming out. But the thing that is blocking it is an unknown to me. Tried looking at others but cant find any with this part. So what is this pipe and part and is it ok to disconnect?

Most probably all to do with EGR, can't be 100% certain as I haven't got a great knowledge of stock SR straight cam parts but that's what it looks like to me. Most people remove it completely as its not really needed

It's part of the breather system, just unbolt it.
