you can have a mk4 golf for about that money, the 1.6 s 8v is a pretty reliable little motor but not the best on fuel. everything i have seen on the 16v ones is hassle though. my mates played silly buggers for ages.
Get a cheap 4x4, great fun when it snows :D
Audi A3 or A4 Quattro???
Saab 95 aero - mines even good on fuel :D
2 and a half litres under a grand

ok it needs abit of work, but still it's going cheap enough.

Mk4 golf gti (125bhp) I had one as my second car, reliable, comfy, fairly nippy.

I would get something like this. The 1.4 VVTi revvy or just good on fuel and bulletproof

I'd stretch the budget if you can and get a mk4 golf gt tdi. Quite swift, economical, comfy and returns 60+ mpg on a run if youre nice to it.
an 850 series volvo....will withstand abuse and built well
almera /primera, focus, old volvo, pug 306, BMW e36, mx5, you're right to avoid renaults though, especially the ones at that price!
Few more to consider, Alfa 147, skoda fabia, pug 406, citroen c5, rover 75
