I took a 406 estate to a garage to get an MOT and a new suspension arm so it could pass the MOT and a new clutch.
The car drove in with no problems for them to start the work. They now can't get the car started and are saying that it needs a new BCM untit or a second hand BCM, ECU and the keys.
Where do I stand legally, who should pay for the repairs?
Did somebody forget to discount the battery correctly.

They need to prove that it wasnt them that duffed it up.
I don't know about the battery connections. They did say the key was left in the ignition but didn't say if the ignition was turned on or not!
Surely as they had the car and were working on it itb would be difficult for them to say they hadn't messed it up. It drove in there but won't drive out!
sounds like they broke it. did you drop it off and they started working on it later, or did you drive it straight into the workshop?
Can't really blame them for an electrical fault when they where changing a suspension arm surely? Seeing as it's a completely unrelated fault id say it was for you to get proof it was them that caused it tbh, they can't be responsible for something they haven't touched

You can try jump starting/charging the battery but it won't re start till its re set

the owner got the car back then fcuked of to nigeria for 2 months and battery went flat again/wouldn't re start when jumped/charged
blamed us so we had to do the collect and take to pug dealer again
no idea if the above applies to the 406 tbh, it was a 51 plate 307 (base model POS) iirc we had all the agro with
I've never liked anything french and that further sealed the deal they are a pain in the ar$e car to own
yep you have to disconnect battery/remove starter to get the gearbox out,the problem starts either from the battery going flatQuote:

could have been worse, we heard some Renualts store power for the air bags and if the sub frame needs to come off to fix a gearbox fault
just unplugging the sensors (that are connected to the sub frame)
All the air bags go off in the car AND breaks the windscreen just to add insult to injury
thats with key/card out of ignition and no battery connected,
so you now have a car with a knackered gearbox AND it needs an interior (seat and side airbags etc all go off) and a windscreen

the BSI has to 'go to sleep' before disconnecting the battery,if not it wipes its codes
If this is the case with yours imo They are liable as any decent garage should know this stuff

I''ve never had a issue with discounting the batteries but I've seen garages do all sorts.
My bet is the starter power has hit the engine block as they was trying not to loose all the codes tho could just be an earth broken or not connected.
According to Citizens Advice, under the supply of goods and services act 1982. I have to prove that the garage was negligent or their work substandard.
A little difficult I think!
Options.
New BSI £1000 plus VAT, fitting and programming at Peugeot.
Try and get the original unit re programmed.
Get the key, BSI and ECU form another car and fit them However some people say that the ECU and BSI unit numbers need to match what's already on there. Other people say that you may get away with it if they're not an exact match. :confused:
Any advice and the address of a specialist near Hull that can fix it needed.

I know on citroens you can swap the ecu,bsi key,door lock,fuel cap and you will need to get the radio or it recorded. Which is normally the same.
I'd becareful tho as costs can swap might be worth more than the car have you paid the garage for the work?
I would have it crushed, any pile of junk that can loose its ecu that easily or loose codes like that needs cubed and dumped on the dealers door step with a sigh saying "TURD".
I''ve seen the garage up the road from me do tons of citroens, peugeots and there is no way they do anything other than discount the battery when i did my mom's clutch never did anything special just disconnected the battery yet none of them lost the codes and started straight away.Quote:

but the OP shouldn't be paying for that if it turns out to be the codes were wiped due to them not understanding the procedure
I mentioned before and them just pulling the battery off,or the battery has gone flat whilst on the ramp being repaired
I'm guessing the OP has a large bill to pay still and the agro of getting it recovered to another garage
(who may well be able to point finger of blame at the 1st garage) and trying to get the re-sync + recovery costs back
I say another garage as the 1st place want just load it up with new or 2nd hand parts it potentially don't need

You drove it in there and they've buggered it up, clearly there are issues with the cars electrics that require a special procedure to be followed.
They didn't do that and have made a mess.
not the garages fault,seen it before and a mate was brought to court over it and the customer lost. from memory it was just a matter of recoding the ecu for lost data. if i remember tho the ecu is beside the battery on them and if jump started and a lead comes off it can pop the ecu. you have to remember the pugs are known for ecu's just crapping themselves out of nowhere also and most auto electricians will tell you this straight out
