Selling on Social Media: The Highlights

Popping up from another thread, I thought it might be interesting to document our various trials and tribulations of trying to sell on social media.

I just want to make clear, I'm not knock social media for selling. It's hugely powerful and it's free, although not without risk. But I do find that the general quality of enquiry varies wildly.

I won't be the only one, so why not document them here for a laugh. Since it's social media messaging, I don't see any need to censor names, only addresses etc.

Starting off with, the timewasting lowballer. Offers welcome, but what were you hoping for?

There are so many f*cktards on there. Bex put her 02 Mini Cooper S up a year or so ago. 120k with a years mot for £1500. Got an offer within 15 mins of £500. Despite being higher spec than anything on the bay of e for sale at that time and cheaper than most of them. When the offer was declined pointing this out, the person sent her a barrage of abuse. Second attempt selling on social media was a mint condition 1995 Ibanez acoustic guitar. Offered for £35. Offers came in starting at a fiver as long as we could "prove it's genuine with details of the serial number" etc etc.

We won't bother again.

I lost count of the stupidity I received when breaking my s14. Best one was a set of almost new work t7r's in strong sizes, with almost new RSR's fitted. The add was very clear, I wrote '£1000 no offers, I'd rather keep them so don't bother' one message just said 'take 800', no hello, not even a currency. Got ****ed right off then he wondered why I didn't bother replying to it.
Oh, and the almost new PMS Cobra downpipe I had for sale, that cost nigh on £500 to bring into the country, yet someone thought it wise to explain it's 'just a used exhaust piece' so I should sell it for £200 :wack:

This. You seemingly have to add circa 40% to what you want to achieve, when using marketplace, in the vague hope you might end up somewhere near it.

Actually yes. For the last 18 years. So when we post something we know what it's worth and expect a certain amount of negotiation but not people taking the piss. When I'm actually at work (furloughed) and I'm selling something priced at £10,000 I don't expect to have an offer of £500 for it. £9,000 or £9500 maybe and there's an opening to the conversation but take the piss like these mongs and the company I work for will tell you to **** off. In those words. I've seen/heard it happen and it is quite funny/perversely satisfying. The joys of working for an independent family owned business :wack:

I think there's a difference there though, look at my first one, when I told him no the message was never even read. They're just lowballers. The rest are people who don't understand what cars they have.
