Has anyone here ever owned an FTO , I was looking at one in a local garage the other day (really nice dark silver colour) I drove one a while ago and reckon they are similar to the S14 performance wise, I do like the looks too, just wondered if anyone had any opinions either way ??

I dont tend to go for "rush from the lights like a 17 year old in a nova sri" so the "scrabble" shouldn`t be too much of a problem for me really.

But a good starter car for Gran Turismo 3. They're supposed to be nearly as good as an Integra Type R for FWD Handling. And they do look good.

But then again why not an Eclipse

Being constructive now...

The FTO is a nice car, well balanced and easy to drive fast, but I have a mate who has one back home, and he reckons his Starion was quicker and more fun to drive...

So RWD gets it as normal, but it is allegedly one of the very best FWD chassis out there.

As for rushing from the lights, what if there is a sale on in principles and then you have to have your nails done? Scrabbly (grin)

Although I do need my nails doing (they are covered in silver spray paint from detailing my air vent rings at the weekend)

Sal, the FTO was one of the cars I was looking at as well as the 200 and the Celica. They are a really nice car and I would recommend it.

However, I think the BB would be heartbroken if at least one of us didnt end up with a 200!!

I know this is rude Sal but.... How old are you? I'm still one of the unbelievers of your piccy, would need to see you next to your MX5 to be a convert :-)

What's wrong with principles? My GF shops there cos of the "petite" range, reckons there are few places that can fit someone who is a size 8 and 5'2...

They had a write up on the FTO in one of the JAP Tuning mags, was it Banzai or the other one?

Sal,

I was thinking of going for the 2.2 Mivec FTO a little while back, but at that time they were only imports.

They are now official via Mitsi dealers, but that will be the newest ones only. Not that imports are a bad thing, but have had a few mates caught out with import Mr2's. Brake discs being a different size. A mates MX5 (Eunos Roadster) was involved in a accident and they had to get the gearbox sent over from the land of the rising sun for £1400.

Back to the FTO. They are supposed to be fairly quick 7second mark 0-60, the 2.2 being quicker than that though.
http://www.mitsubishi-fto.org/ http://www.carsurvey.org/model_Mitsubishi_FTO.html

They are also supposed to be fairly plasticy, but the 200 has been called that too.

FTO 2 litre 6 Cylinder producing 197bhp and 147lbft torque at 6000rpm. 167hp/tonne and 0-60 7.2 seconds. FWD Evo rating 2 stars

S14 2 Litre 4 Cylinder producing 197bhp and 195lbft torque at 4500rpm. 158hp/tonne ad 0-60 of 6.5 seconds. RWD. Turbo means you can make it go quicker for cheaper. Evo rating 3 stars

Personally, I would buy a 200, as I did http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hope this helps,

You do have to be a little careful with imported FTO's. A lot of the true jap spec FTO's are limited to 100Kw and 115 mph. I know that the top speed isn't important on the road, but the power output is.

It can be rectified by chipping it, but this instantly ups the purchase cost and insurance cost.

A lot of them are already done, and they do feel quick(ish) even before they are done as they will pull very strong until the power is limited.

Having said that the FTO is a nice looking car and I don't know anyone that has had any problems with one.
Although they are getting a little too common now.

They are getting common indeed.

And I personally thnk they look odd.

FTO is imported by Ralliart. They are still built to Japanese Spec, check for underbody corrosion inhibitors etc.

Where did you hear that Dreadly? They ARE limited for the Jap market at 180 km/h as are all cars sold in Japan. It is easily overcome with a simple, cheap mod. Limiting the POWER though I have not heard of.

Besides, FTO's are not quite official UK cars now, like say a Mitsi Carisma or whatever. Ralliart take a Jap spec FTO, then make a couple of modifications to it and sell them.

Is that why my Jap import Eunos hits an invisible stop at 115mph even though its not at the rev limiter ?

Sal - in answer to your question - very probably.

Papa Laz - I have seen FTOs on a rolling road hit 100KW and stop rising. I was later informed by a reliable source that this is a limit imposed in Japan.
I'll try to get hold of the power graph for you.

Sounds like it. 180 kmh translates to 112 mph, so yeah, thats probably it.

You can buy a "Speed Limit Defencer" to get around it if you want, alternatively any of the import prepartion specialists should be ble to sort this out for you.

The FTO's are nice cars but they are very noisy!!! A lot more so than the 200sx when cruising, it's the VTEC engine screaming away. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

I personally like the FTO. The tip-tronic gearbox is awsome fun, and when lazy, sliiiiiiiiiiide it into auto http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif
Please don't ban me for this, but its what we would all dream of in our auto/manual S13/S14s.. admit it!

The car doesn't feel fast but it! I rememebr seeing the speedo rise up like the rev counter! Awsome fun, and throwable too!

Like it.. like it alot.. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

If you get one, make sure the importers dont stick naff indicators all over the front to meet the import MOT thingy test.. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Cool, I'll have a look. I'm going to the RR day at Interpro - I'll be dissapointed if my car only makes 100kw (134 bhp)!! I'm fairly confident it'll do a lot more...

I rate these FTO's if you don't wont to go to far with power.

Been in one and you can rev the nuts off em and that's only my mates GR. Go with the GPX for 5 speed tiptronic and just over 200bhp (GR's 4 speed tip with 190 bhp). GPX has the variable cam timing as well. Plus you can piss my mate off cos biught the GR. Wotch out for the 1.8 models, some are about and thicko dealers are shifting them out at the same price as the GR's.

Handling is ok too.

Glad I have a 200.

My friend Mikes FTO is very nice, V6, Silver with some polished PIAA Alloys and the best looking stereo set up ever, its got like 2 head units that glow all sexy in the dark. Hes the first owner the car has had in the UK and he says its a nice car, just a little "soft" for him at the minute. Mods are coming soon...

He doesnt rate the handling wholy, because while it is very good, he doesnt feel confident pushing it through the turns due to the body roll it has. Plus i ditched him through the turns... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Sounded great too, that V6 has a wonderous roar. Havent had a drag race with him yet, so i dont really know about how well they go.

Overall, i think they are a very nice car. S14 or FTO? Dunno, i cant afford either...

before I started to mod the s13 I thought about just buying a faster car than have all this modding grief, so I took out an FTO for a test drive because I think they look realy good. I didnt get it to wheelspin at all and the handleing was quite good. Also on the same day I had a go in a 300zx which was impressive, but at the end of the day the 200 felt better than the FTO and the 300 sounded like to much to maintain.
If it was a toss up between the FTO and an S14 the s14 would win for me, only just.

I had a bit of a hustle with a 2.0 V6 FTO at goodwood. it had the measure of me on the brakes, but I left it for dead on the straighty bits - and my '200 is pretty standard apart from the ND200 concversion. Well it was then anyway!
