IT boffins please

I got an email with an attachment.

Don't recognise the attachment file type. It said eml after it. Can anyone tell me what software this is from and how I can open the attachment?

Seen this at work this week. The eml file can be opened by outlook which I think outlook may auto send. I would advise against casually opening it. If you can save the file to a location on disk, then open it with a text editor it may have something in it like "sample.exe". typically the ones we got had a song title . eml.

At my work I use crappy uniplex mail so the usual viruses don't affect me. I just get them from customers using outlook.

Yeah, potentially not good Pete.
It's an MS Outlook message, but there was a rather nasty, very virile virus, Nimbda, that used this os one way of propogating.

You have definitely got the Nimda Worm virus matey. It took our whole WAN down for several days. If your PC is standalone then it isn't too bad, but if it is on a network unplug the RJ45 cable immediately . Then get a copy of Mcafee virus scan v 4.51 or higher and download dat file 4169 from the mcafee site. Do a full scan of all files and select clean automatically. That will sort you out.

Naaaa. I get *.eml files all the time. when someone forwards an email to you, but chooses to send as an attachment instead of a direct forward, then it WILL always attach the file as a *.eml file.
If your system has not got an up to date virus checker on it then sack (or beat up) the IT administrator. I wouldn't worry too much at all mate, but I'd advise you get Norton instead of McAffee.. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

2) If you have a virus checker open it

1) Dont worry about it. Some nonce forwarded you a mail as an attachment. chill, open it.
2) If it does go wrong, and you have not got an upto date virus checker (Norton is best http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif ) then point a finger to the IT Manager. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

thats like saying if you have a .vbs file you "Definatlely have a few thousand viruses on your PC"

.eml is just the MS Outlook Express message file format.

if you are worried have a read through Real Nimda Info (http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/)

then download Nimda Fix (http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/security/nimda_form/)

My brother uses nortel and some crazed government developed mail package and EVERYTHING that I get from him is .eml
Its nothing to worry about if youve got decent virus software - just scan it
