I've listened to them but I don't like their normal stereo sound and the new models are to dear. The nads now sold out(pa!) but at only £200 from £650 I'm not surprised. The marantz is out of stock everywhere, and Mrs K does't like the looks of the Denon. The search goes on. I'm looking at a Thomson on thurs £229 reduced from £350 but have only seen 1 review on it that said it was'average'

Kerfumph,

The sony ones are supposed to be fantastic for normal stereo too. That is why they consistantly get 5/5 in all the reviews. I know they are a few years old now, but you can probly get one for about £200. 90WPC too, very dynamic. Have you looked at the Yamaha ones?

The Sony is not bad in normal streo alltho not overly dynamic, but realy comes into is own when using Dolby Digital and DTS! and it's got a parametric equiliser and more toys than you can belive! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Mrs K does'nt like the Yamahas either, but I've just seen a Sony strde 445(I know thats going down a bit) but its only £119 at richer sounds. I'm changing from a Sony 335 and want to reduce the cable mass by having an on board decoder, currently I use the one in my Sony 725 DVD.

Good thinking Batman.

Make sure you get a good quality (audioquest) S-Video cable and a good Coax cable (Audioquest again) to link the DVD upto the DSP.

If the DVD doesn't have Coax (725 does I think) use Toslink instead (optical). Generally Opticalm doesn't sound as good as Coax, but that can differ from make to make. Since the designers may have put more effort into the Optical output than the Coax. Phew.

Sorry I you know all that already.

Ok heres one.. if I use the video switching on the (whatever!) amp, to cut down on cabling and for ease of use, how the feck do I listen and watch sky through the tv and its speakers without having to run a scart between the 2? If you can't whats the point of having the picture and sound running through the amp when all you need to do is come off the tellys audio outs to the amp for if you want to listen to surround
Hmmmmm... thats very poorly described sorry.

Ok, I think I know what you are getting at. But why would you want to use the TV speakers, when you have got a front and rear stereo pair?

The idea behind it, I think, since I have never used it; is that if you select DVD on the AMP, not only will you hear it but it should change the TV too, like scart autoswitchingthingy.

I am kind of a purist, have got DVD feeding into TV via beefy S-Video cable and audio running from DVD into DSP via beefy Coax cable. I try my hardest not to use scart, unless it is an S-Video equipped scart.

This means that I have to turn the amp onto DVD, to hear it and also have to switch the TV to S-Video channel. This means I have to press not 1 but 2 buttons, argh!!!!

But it also means that I don;t need 2 times the cables. The SVideo cable is £80 for 1 metre, so I am glad I only need the one.

This switching is conveniant, but costs more since you actually need more cables. DVD to AMP for audio (coax or Toslink). DVD to AMP for video (SVideo\Phono\Scart) and THEN AMP to TV (SVideo\Phono\Scart).

You might as well minimise the cables you need, but not using switching, this will also improve the quality, since you are taking another peice of kit out of the equation. Best to feed the video output from DVD straight int the TV (Via Svideo).
You could always use a large hose pipe, cut down the side and feed he cables in to it? This would "tidy" the cables up slightly. Or use Cable tie?

Hope this helps,

John.

Thats how I do mine at the moment, I think i'll stick with that and just connect the amp up when I set it up ( the thomson is on screen set up)
As for the tv speakers, some times I dont want all the speakers going i.e news, crappy soaps, etc

Oh and the cheap sonys out of stock, this is really starting to p1ss me off. Everywhere I phone that has a good deal all I get is 'sorry out of stock' even though I ring as soon as the adverts out.

Sod it I'm gonna buy the Thomson tomorrow and hope for the best!
