You'll be hard pressed to find a job in that area... I do 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th(?) line network, server and application support, implementation, pre-sales and development. But still I can't find a local job. Everyone is laying off at the mo, as I'm sure u r aware http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Added to which I'm being underpaid by about 20% http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Hang on... we all own fairly fast cars... why don't we go into business as professional getaway drivers for armed robbers? It's a growth market!

It a complete fooking nightmare in the professional world at the moment. Redundancies/pay cuts/salary freezing you name it. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

I work for Unisys, and we are cutting 3000 jobs, Vodafone have just announced 10% job cuts. The whole IT job market is dryer than a nuns chuff.

Good luck, just take whatever job you can get - you can always chuck it in when the economy picks up.

Train up for XP migration, that's about the only thing with a serious skills shortage, but you'd probably only be able to get contract work for that.

I hope they don't get rid of me any time soon, I want to leave when I want, not when they tell me http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

I never realised that the terriorist attacks in America would affect the world so badly. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

To be honest want to work locally anyway, but as you say its very dry out there at the moment.....

It was bad before the attacks, they just made it worse.

I've been looking for a new job for about 6 months, but haven't been able to find one. I think I will stay here, on s**t pay, until the market picks up again http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

I think my problem is nobody can afford a support consultant any more http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Saying that, out Global Outsourcing department is still recruiting, and I believe we have an office in Slough. Why not try looking on our web site.

I'm actually considering a job as, no, I can't even say it, oh well, here goes.

BUS DRIVER!!!!????!!!!

Don't all laugh at once, please.

Eh, it's grim up north. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Well, it's better than the crappy model making job (crappy job, not models) that I've been doing for the last six months, and been paid for about one day. (Bloody awfull syntax, I know)

So if anyone is looking for a highly talented, multi-skilled, but un-qualified genius/engineer/musician? (Must re-write my CV)

Guess I'm lucky for just start (3 weeks ago) a Technical Support Manager Job then eh? Ferk. I found there 'seemed' to be a lot of jobs around (I'm in Reading by the way), but when applied they had all been taken up by internal placements.. b@stards!!

Anyway, sun is shining again now, and the company I am working for is going places.. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Keepp ya heads up chaps, it WILL get better soon.

Some good news - it's probably easier to get a job at CSC again if needed ... dunno about Surrey area though!

andyf
07-11-2001, 18:16
er yeah...
what I mean is, CSC have relaxed recruitment stuff a bit so it's a bit easier to get a job with them. Not get a job if you worked for them before innit.

I thought you'd only just started a new job?

It took me ages to find a job (about 6 months), I live in Surrey and now work near Oxford. The economy has been terrible to say the least for the last 6 months, not helped by the terrorist attacks obviously.

The market will pick up next year.

Sorry, can't help with PC support. I work with PC's but also with UNIX, Linux, Internet/Email services etc...

You need to diversify.

Things are starting to pick up, Q3 next year seems to be the time people I've spoken to as the main turning point. it's not that there isnt any money about, it's just everybody is nervouse about spending it. most companies sales negotiation times have doubled since the crash in 2000. when confidence resumes the market will pick up pretty rapid.

Get yourselves into academia I say. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Try www.jobs.ac.uk (http://www.jobs.ac.uk) varied stress free work, loads of young totty to look at too around September time. It's great in May/June (when the 'blossom' come out) too as my office window is 2 floors above the entrance to the Library. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif Here puss puss. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif Bugger is my missus' office is even closer to the door. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Money is not as good as company work but the work is good, flexible and mininal stress, super fast bandwidth too.
I never thought I'd be happy to go to work.

No David, not an academic I'm afraid. I work in the network team, Internet Systems Officer. I did my second degree (first really I did a HND years ago @ Bristol) here and never left. But yes CompSci, thought about and was approached about doing research but decided cash was far more important. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

If I was suddenly to become rich i would self fund a PhD in a topic of my choice rather that be a skivvy to some big organisation that pays peanuts to get the best R & D possible for their new project.

I quite fancy Dr Palmer, would be funny to visit my old teachers who wrote me off years ago. Not that I blame them I may add. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

I guess you may have heard of Phil Grant then being into AI.

Dunno, he use to teach me and looks like Dudley Moore. Affectoinately known as Dudley Mullet, bad hair!

I think he could be the chair of some AI research body. He's our Dean of Science (or was last year). I'll find out what he really does WRT AI.

Are you a lecturer, proper paid RA or a PhD student?

I'm a research fellow, paid (indirectly) by the DTi. I work with this company too: http://www.masagroup.net/

Quite interesting stuff (IMHO...).

It's surprising how many IT people there are on here!

I guess IT people are the only ones playing on the web all day s opposed to actually doing what they are paid to do.

Luckily it is what I'm paid to do!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
