If second hand, too much money.
If new, not too sure since then Durons are the cheaper version of the Athlon. Meant to compete with the Celeron.

Check out manufacturers like, mesh, actinet, evesham, etc. All have webites.

You might be able to get a 1.1 or 1.4 athlon thunderbird system for near that kind of money. Memory is well cheap at the mo, bought 512mb pc2100 for < £50 inc VAT.

Can you get a faster thunderbird and a system with PC2100 for similar money from them or maybe £100 more?

At the moment you won't be able to upgrade it much, since the motherboard is only PC133 which is quite old now. You will also find that the max processor speed will limited, eg you can't fit a 1.8 GHz Athlon when the price falls to £100 or so. Even though, they may release a BIOS upgrade which will allow this.

Not too worried about the HDD size of 20GB sicne you can get larger for cheaper at places like http://www.dabs.com , you will be theoretically able to fit another 2 HDD's once you have filled the first 20GB one. Do you know if it is UDMA 5/ATA 100? If you can, get this too. But Promise do cheap good RAID UDMA 5 pci cards, which will allow you to fit more CD's/HDD's in the machine, running at a faster speed.

Phew!!!! Sorry about that..... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/confused.gif

Thanks John,

I've changed motherboard (Soltek SL75 DRV2) and ram is now 256Mb DDR 2100.

this brings it to £570, that aint to bad I reckon.

Are you building one?

Yes, definately go for DDR as theres no reason not to.

Last time I checked Athlon 1.4 chips were well under a hundred quid. Would go for that if possible.

But yes, that system sounds good for under £600 inc.

PC Hotlist:
1) DDR Memory (256MB min)
2) Thunderbird CPU (Athlon XP = Best)
3) Motherboard RAID (Abit KG7 RAID = Best)
4) GeForce 2/3 (Must be AGP)
5) CDRW (12 Speed+)
6) Intellimouse
7) 17" + Monitor (Make sure can handle 1280 * 1024 min)

So there you go.. If you want me to look into custombuild prices give me a shout.. I know a thing of two.. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
