View Full Version : Cruising motor

I have just acquired what I deem to be a cruising/shopping motor for general load carrying and the like. This being a Rover SD1 Vanden Plas, 3.5litre V8 Auto thing.

Only trouble is I like it so much, I think it is going to replace the Nissan altogether.

On the plus side it does cost me less to insure and most (if not all) parts are considerably cheaper than those for the Nissan. It's so easy to drive - and lazy too. Oh and it's a V8 (nothing beats the sound of a V8! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif )

On the down side, in order to out accelerate anything other than a pedestrian I need to make sure the tank is full of fuel before hitting the loud pedal, as although it can pick it's feet up it does require super tankers full of gogo juice.

So, should I keep the car as a second motor to the Nissan or should I promote it to top dog? (very subtle Rover joke there, but probably not worth pointing out)

Answers on a postcard please.

Find a way of sticking the V8 into the 2***** !

Difficult descision ..... I love the 200 ... but I have always wanted a V8

I once drove one of them without a silencer - proper V8 loudness! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

To be honest I'm suprised you've found one that hasn't rusted away, there aren't many left. Good cars, if a little rust prone.

Did you see what Clarkson did to his SD1 on one of his more recent videos? Can't remember what the video is called but its the one where he admits that modified cars are good http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/eek.gif

There's also a capri that beats a 500bhp+ slk on the drag strip http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif I've always wanted to know what was in that capri??

Dunc.

Yeah, I saw that as well.

He put a 7.2L http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/eek.gif in the Rover!!!

And the Merc was worth £200K!!!

It was voted the UK's worst car ever! and i'm surprised that you found one that hasn't broken down! their reliability was worse than my 200 http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

I like them though....you should have seen the two going round Silverstone at Trax!

Promote it to top dog. 200sx's (especially tuned S13's) can be unhappily unreliable.

The Capri's a turbo cossie powered effort - if you go to one of the In The Oil sponsored/run cruises, it usually shows up there. I think the owner is called Rusty, the golf fanatic at work knows him fairly well. Think it's nitrous'd as well

Wow, quite surprised by the responses to be honest, but pleased in many ways.

V8's rule most definately.

The Rover is very clean for it's age - needs bits and pieces doing. Only real metal worm is the offside sill. Has been well looked after, and a genuine 89k on the clock too.
