Now I've got the attention of all you IT bods, (well Jezz, Docwra and Andy F at least!)

I've just bought a 10 pack of cd-r80's for £4 from Aldi. They are labelled as Tevion and made by GmbH&co in Germany. They claim "Pure silver technology" and do look much less blue than others I've seen. Oh, and they are in slimline cases.

Are they any good? Should I go and buy a wadge of them? I'm only going to use them for music in the car (hence mentioning the cases) but if they are crap then I've only spent £4.

These are the first cd-r's I've bought, so comparisons are meaningless.

You bastard.!!!!!!!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif Fecking worked a treat mate.

I always use the cheapest discs I can buy. I always buy ones without jewel cases cos I go some wallets for the car.

Then jungle ones are pretty good £27 for 100, actually memorex. 80 16 speed jobs.

I can get 200 for £34 though, sound like the ones you just bought, difficult to work out which side is which.

Try 'em and give em a bash, if they work then cool. I have used some branded (expensive) discs like TDK and Verbatim before and they have been crap.

GMBH = LTD doesn't it?

Jezz.

Er yeah, that should have said BestMedia GmbH... Oooopps!

While I'm on the subject of computer stuff, I've just received a couple of e-mails with attachments (from the coalman, anachronistic or what!) one of which is doc.scr which downloaded but "can't find the application which created it" etc. The other is MP3.pif which won't download, "can't find file".

As a complete moron with regard to PC's, e-mail, and the web in general, and being only semi-moronically profficient with my mac, WHAT THE HELL DOES IT ALL MEAN?

I know this is the equivalent of someone asking where to put the petrol in their car, but I'm stuck, and ordering coal on-line is weird enough without e-mailing the coalman for computer advice!

Sounds dodgy, .scr is the windows screensaver extension and .pif is like a batch file.

Both 99% likely to be virii.

Billy

That's weird, as neither had any meaningful text in the e-mail itself.

Wasn't an email from me was it. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

You have one of them Mac things though don't you, should be safe from filthy MS virii.

Although there was a MS security alert for one MS/MAC product the other week, cant remember what it was, If you want I'll dig out the email I got from MS, better let me know if you do though cos I wont do it if you don't want me to.

Nah mate, save your wrist.... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'll just mail them back and tell 'em I've got a mac so I can't open attachments. Should work.
I'll check Apple's site for security stuff.
I won't check MS's site on principal! ******s, grrr, mumble, feck, girls, DRINK!

Arse!! I was on this thread like a rat up a drainpipe!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

We use Kodak CDs for all of our external release software - we even have a robot (Mickey) to burn the CDs for us
Id go with what Jezz said - just buy the cheapest you can - Ive never heard of there being data corruption on any CDs, so it shouldnt make a difference
If you want to play copies ina Sony CD player, then Id guess the make would make a difference, but I dont actually know that http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/confused.gif

Gotcha!

But that is exactly what I want to do with them. (How d'ya know I've got a Sony???)

These look pretty good, like I say much less blue than the jungle ones (for instance. I just happen to have one here). As far as I know it's all about reflectivity isn't it?
And they say they are good for 24x recording, so I guess I'll give 'em a go!

The B@dtrans virus I posted about elsewhere on general non 200sx, produces attachments with .scr and .pif extensions. I've never come across a virus that has got around to people I "know" as much as this one, even though it doesn't seem to be attracting the publicity some others have.

As far as CD-Rs go I've always bought the cheapest I could find and have never had any more difficulties than with major brands.

The one problem may be a long term one , in that I have heard that the dyes in the cheapos are not as stable as those used by the majors, whether this is just a spin from the likes of TDK I don't know. Of course it doesn't really matter as long as we are only making copies of discs we already own!

By the way, buy spindles of 100 and some cheap "slips" you will save a lot in the long term.

Years ago it was said that the silver/silver discs were the best for the playstation. however the pickups in the later 'stations are better anyway.

if you are in doubt just burn them at a slower speed, the laser strength is supposed to be adjusted relative to speed but I know for a fact that discs burnt slower are easier to read.

What writer have you got?

Bo!!ocks I didn't read your post properly, I have a Sony head unit and it reads discs burnt at 16 speed no problem at all, non of that skipping over bumps and stuff. My old Sony head unit was just as good.

Ive used a variety of discs in my multichanger - some work, some arent so good. If you put em i the middle of the changer they work better though ........
One thing I can definitely say is DONT BUY CD-RW's - they are a bastard to get to work in a Sony.
Why is it only Sonys that are afflicted with this?? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

CD-RW are have only 20% difference in the reflectivity between hi's & lows, CDR's are about 70%.

Middle of your changer? Odd cos it uses the same transport regardless of cartridge position.

Well my coalman e-mailed me today to apologize for yesterday and inform me that they were attacked by a virus but they are OK now. Their words, not mine.

Pity, since it's the first e-mail I've received that had an attachment!
