Yeah I've seen that too Geoff, I think it's is something to do with DirectX.
Or perhaps a OpenGL or Glide DLL.

I was enjoying that 'till it rebooted my machine half way through.

Geoff; If u don't have a half decent 3D graphics card or accelerator it won't work.

I u have then download the latest drivers for it and also install DirectX.

Has anyone run it using a 56k modem or on a PC thats not hooked up to the web, I wonder if its streaming data while its running??? Clever stuff, wouldn't be sat here if I understood how thats done.

Yeah Thats what we thought so we ran it on a standalone machine and it still worked, it's the best thing I've seen in ages. theres all sorts of theories floating about here from fractal commpression to video on demand compression. whatever it is it's bloody amazing. were just trying to get the proccess id at the moment and have some stuff watching temp directories in the background

Its a good demo showing that you don't need huge textures to have good graphics.

All the textures aren't very detailed and some are repeated quite alot, with DirectX,G lide and OpenGL the actual source code is very small its the textures that make up the bulk of the program and i'm certain that it decompresses them into the graphics cards buffer, so the actual exe file will be small.

There are alot of demo competitions for demos under a certain file size.

You run it and get lots of pretty walkthroughs of fully rendered environments and BG music, bit like a computer game. The clever thing being that the original ZIP file is only 62k.

Well I'm impressed, and have passed it onto our web, software design team.. At home now and tested it.. no internet connection (disconnected Cable modem).. and running on OC'd TNT2 Pro. So its not streaming, its all there.. 64k's worth.

I'm thinking it is using the fancy new DX8+ coding which means all the code is in DX8 rather than in the EXE file.. but still ... music on top.. WOW!

Splendid quality all the way through.. and for 64k!! Shhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeett!!

Most of the PC mags like "PC gamer" with the discs on the front give away all this kind of stuff on their mag discs. The latest version is DirectX8 and if you look at the link in my previous post the makers of that little program we`re all talking about state that you DO need it to run it.
Its usually in the utilities section on a PC Gamer mags cover disc.

Got a lad at work to look into it.
Sent the demo to a mate in Sweden that has been doing demo coding...

I'll translate what he wrote...

1. Precalculation of the objects in the code, i.e. you calculate the objects manually, often cubes and cylinders (put together
to shape other forms)
2. You don't link the standard libraries, instead you use only the libraries d3d DDL's (direct X)
3. Using a hell of a good exe packer.
4. The textures are procedural textures, which means that they are being calculated as well.

But is is very nice http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Dont mean much to me but he was impressed.

It is there starionman.

I think what Nat says is more or less spot on. Do you guys get the labels in white when you view it? EG Grass00, Door00? Since this is probably all the Exe is, a 3D space with surfaces labelled according to their Textures within DirectX Dll's. Hence the size is really small, all the big stuff sample textures and lightin effects are stored in the libraries and not the Exe. Same is probly true of the instruments for the music.

Fast POC and graphics card needed to produce the demo in realtime. Like the GT3 replays.

Well thats what I think. :)

Will use regmon and filemon, and proabably find all the calls are to DirectX librarys. Can't do so now as they are not installed an I am going out.

Not from my machine you didn't because I had to download it again from doing a google search this morining. I did a complete search of my machine and it was deleted out of trace. Perhaps it was cached by your ISP, but it sure as hell wasn't here? Wierd.

Bizarre!!!

I clicked on the link you posted in the thread, was told that I already had, would I like to overwrite?

I renamed the existing file by potting a 1 infront of the file name and click OK to commence download.

Was using a different ISP last time I downloaded it too?

Weird .....

That is freakish!
The reason I cleaned up was because a few people were scanning my server and d'loading everything so I removed anything not important.

I thought I kept a copy else where on my disc but the search came back with nothing, certainly not in wwwroot/200sx so I just googled for it and got it from somehwere else.

Yeah, saw this about a year ago ;)

My guess is that it uses a helluva lot of API calls to DirectX - so the amount of code actually being used is bigger than you think.

It *is* impressive though.
