I should know this but!! I have a whine coming through speakers, gets worse when lights are on and when revs rise! so im'e pretty sure its the alternator! head unit power is filterd, but i have three amps powerd direct from battery, can anyone tell me what type of filter to fit in line! or shouled i fit a subpressor to the alternator? and what type? i thought there was one allredy fitted as standard!!

Sounds like what you need is a ground loop isolator - they go on the power cable and cut the alternator whine.
You can get for £10-asmuchasyouwant prolly from Halfords or similar

I had this, and bought a ground loop isolater, which cut all the high frequencies to my music http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif Then I re-wired my car properly and it went away http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

The thing to do is move all the power wires away from speaker cable/rca leads, make sure all the amps use a single GOOD earth and fat earth cable. Then make sure the head unit is earthed well. It's all a matter of earthing I think.

Failing that I have a ground loop isolater I could sell you!

The s14's have a huge flaw where the stereo is concerned. The changer cables etc are in with the main loom of the car, so I guess its pretty easy to pick up interference.
