Not me. The fukwit in the Shell near me was barely able to speak English, let alone explain the differences!

Has it replaced Regular and Super?

I put a full tank in at the weekend, can't say i noticed any difference. I asked the bloke at the counter what octane rating it was and he just looked at me blank and the optimax sales literature is no better either, just says its replacement for both unleaded and super unleaded.

Appears to have made my car quieter.

I thought it was meant to be 98.6RON?

John.

Could hardly miss that they had got the new gear in at my local Shell, all decked out in red Ferrari polo shirts and baseball hats emblazoned with Optimax (and Ferrari).
As to the stuff that makes the engine go bang, I have to say it's so bloody subjective that it's difficult to discern any change, maybee it does feel smoother on hard acceleration....................maybee not.

So far as I understand it, the only thing an increase in octane rating does is allow the use of higher compression ratios and boost pressures. It's just an anti-denonation thing, and that's it. Very often it has a lower calorific value.

If your car is running without pinking on 95 octane, you wouldn't expect to notice any difference at all from moving up to higher octane fuel.

98.6 octane eh ? I've read that they change the formulation of petrol almost a few times a year to take account for different climates, temperatures etc. In the winter they use more lighter fuels, more volatile, easier starting etc... so I'd be pretty impressed if they can manage to control the octane rating to that degree.

Although the S14 is ok to run on 95octane, the cars in Japan use closer to the 100mark, so the ECU is actually mapped to run "properly" at that sort of level. I've filled up 3 times now with Optimax and can honestly say that the car runs and accelerates smoother, but not massively. I think it takes a few fill ups to make any difference, so give it a whirl guys. It's no more expensive than SUL.

And theoretically the higher the octane rating, the higher boost you can run safely without as much worry of detonation. But like I said about the ECU being mapped for "around" a certain octane level, it's not always a good thing to run something of very high octane level, like the Total stuff at Silverstone. Although I would love to give it a try after a few tank fulls! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Far too many mods to list here, it takes up far too much space and after being asked very nicely I've decided to shorten the sig (Is that a WOOHOO I hear??)
I, have NO SMELLY TREE, have no plans for a smelly tree and do not want a smelly tree, EVER!!!
Do not take offence to anything I say, even though I probably mean it. I am more than slightly mad, so just chill de feck oooot, ok!

Yeah, good point, but then the Japanese model also runs at a higher boost pressure as standard too to take advantage of the higher octane fuel out there.
But, I would have thought the ECU settings are slightly different for the UK/European market ?

You mean the food women eat to improve their self image (shortly followed by a mars bar as a reward for being good to themselves) ?

Well spotted matey!

Ive had conversations with peeps before about different ECU's in jap market cars. Blitz state that their Access ECU's are not suitable for UK model cars. When I asked why, they said that they'd had (I think) either an MR2 or a Celica in (same engine anyway!) for an ECU upgrade. The thing ran like a bag of poo! Admittedly this is not JUST to do with the fuel, but the octane rating will affect the running of the engine.
Some tuners swear by proper rated fuel, i.e. using super/high octane fuel could be the difference between having to pay out for an engine re-build and not. The engine runs cooler when you use higher octane rated fuel cos it burns more efficiently.

Well, that's partly to do with the calorific value too ! Standard unleaded has a higher calorific value than higher octane stuff, so produces more heat when it's ignited http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Mine came with one of these, does anyone know what they are supposed to do?
Are they customized to the individual mods or are they a generic type like a ND?

Guess they are Japanese so would like 100ron?
