I have started to notice a sort of rattleing / grinding sound from the left hand side of the engine when under fairly heavy acceleration. The car seems to pull alright and appears not to affect perfomance at all. Unmodded S14

Any idea's ?

Sounds like Turbo to me, does it start as the turbo kicks in say about 2500rpm?

Ouch !

Yes it does but at about 3-3500 RPM.

But it is more of a rattleing grinding rather than a whistle that I thought was the typical faulty turbo sound.

Thats just started happenning to my car..a sort of noise when the car is under heavy acceleration .from say 3000 up .especially in
4th gear ..love to know what it is, the car
still seems to have heaps of power but the noise which sounds like two ballbearing running around a ceramic dish is a pain...

Sounds like a good excuse for a nice T28 hybrid to me!

Could it be anything to do with the manifold cracking or leaking, or a faulty gasket?

Cayman,
Keep an eye on the thread below, Mine's got what sounds like the same thing and has just gone in to the spanner merchants for a diagnosis.

DJ..Thanks for this, I dont think it is the turbo because the car still has great performance, it looks like a similar problem too what many people have on the thread you posted, I think it is an exhaust gasket or something, I dont here it when the stereo is on so I will wait until the noise gets louder so that I can then find out what it is

Cheers

I've had a good listen to mine today, which is making a similar type of noise:

The noise is definitely rev-related. It comes in at between 2.25k and 2.75k revs (the exact value varies on different occasions). It always goes above about 3.75k revs. It sounds a bit like swiping a wire scrubbing brush down the side of a cymbal (I would imagine http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif ), and also a bit rattley.

I'll try and get a sample of it tomorrow if I can make my Dad's PC behave. Maybe this'll help sort out what this & other peoples' noises are/aren't.

Please let it be covered by the warranty... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

The mike was too crap to pick up the sound. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

However, on a happier note, I took it to our friendly local mechanic, who took one listen, and diagnosed that something to do with the exhaust. One jarge jubilee clip later, no rattle! Certainly a lot cheaper than a new tubby... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah, sounds like the thing I've got. I've already taken most of the heatsheilds off the exhuast, I think this new rattle I've got is coming from the CAT one now... jesus.
