View Full Version : Oil Grade

Bean

I haven't changed the oil on my car for about 10000 miles and I've got some Castrol GTX kicking around (10w 40).

What grade of oil is recommended for an S14?

Would 10w 40 be OK?

I would change the filter at the same time, obviously!

Cheers.

10w40 is fine.

I'm using 15w50 (again found lying around) which is a bit thick (the oil, not me).

make sure you get a nissan filter.. the one halfords do does fit the engine, but you'll have to disconnect the alternator +ve lead to fit it in http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

10K ?????
You should do it every 6K if you do it to the service schedule.
I do mine every 3K but I dont use any fancy oil as I do it so regularly.
10w 30 is what the handbook says to use.
Make sure you use a genuine nissan oil filer though.

Noooooooooooooooo!!!

Don't use GTX, it's a mineral oil made from mud and dead animals! It will sit in the turbo when you switch off and cook solid there thus blocking your oil ways!

Turbos really must be fed with fully synthetic oil which can withstand the huge temperatures a turbo creates

I run mine on Mobil 1 and change every 3000 with a genuine filter but I think this is too thin so I'm going to try Magnatec next.

Fresh oil is especially important in turbo engines to prolong turbo life

Have a heart and change regularly with synthetic oil. Don't be a cheapskate!

Don't use Magnatec it does what it claims and sticks to metal aka turbo bearings and shaft and it will leave deposits after its been cooked in the turbo for a while.

Mobil 1 and Castrol RS have excellent draining qualitys, Turbo Technics said to avoid oils like Magnatec and any mineral based oils, use a quality synthetic.

Erm, Magnatec is mineral.

Various folks have said Mobil 1 is too thin and not suitable. A 5w30 or 10w40 synthetic or mineral is fine, but as said above, replace it often. Let the turbo cool down at the end of a journey, don't ground your exhaust on speedhumps and grease your door hinges. Replace smeary wiper blades and don't wash the car with fairy cos its got salt in.

It is? Oh well that pi55es on my firework then!

So we can't use mineral as it's made from dead animals and cooks

We can't use Mobil 1 cos it's too thin

We can't use Magnatec as it leaves deposits!

What do Nissan dealers use?
Do they HAVE to use a certain oil Mfg?

This seems to be quite an ongoing question!

Why is mobil 1 too thin ?
Is the viscosity rating not suitable, or is the viscosity rating wrong ?
I wouldn't go near a mineral oil with a barge poll. I use mobil 1, try to change more often than 6k miles if I can.

The Oil is plain Castrol GTX and not Magnatec, I don't believe all the hype about it sticking to the engine when cold.

All mineral oils are made from dead animals, trees etc...

I'll use the 10w40 oil I've already got and buy a genuine Nissan Oil Filter.

Not sure if GTX is mineral/synthetic or a bit of both but the viscosity is good enough.

I know I should of replaced the oil sooner but I've been lazy, I know I've wrong!

It all comes out the same bloody pump.

Just read the owners manual and it does recommend 10w 30.

Can someone explain to me the whole difference between 5w 40, 10w 40, what's better and why?

I used to know but years of drug and alcohol abuse has ****ed my memory!

I said about Magnatec becasue that was the info I recieved from Turbo Technics and other mates with turbo cars.

GTX IS a mineral oil.

I'm going to use Valvoline 5w40 when I change the oil tommorow.

I PUT MOBIL1 AND A NISSAN FILTER ON MINE ABOUT 3000K AGO AND I'VE JUST STRIPPED THE MANIFOLD AND TURBO OFF THE CAR (TO WELD THE MANIFOLD http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif ) AND THE TURBO PICK UP AND RETURN OILWAYS LOOK LIKE NEW! IT AINT TOO THIN COS ITS 0W/40 WHICH MEANS IT OPERATES AT A VISCOSITY OF 40 AT ALL TIMES, 0W MEANS IT HAS NO TOLERANCE EITHER WAY WHERAS 10W/40 MAY OPERATE AT 30 VISCOSITY WHEN WARM (THIN)AND 50 VISCOSITY WHEN COLD (THICK).
HOPE THIS HELPS.

Dean,
exactly, the whole point of a synthetic oil is it is extremely stable with temperature. I just don't understand this stuff about mobil 1 being too thin. It's either rated at a certain viscosity or it's not.
Call me a sceptic ( honestly I'm not ) - a "thin" oil is less likely to protect your engine if your floor it to the red line from cold. Then a nice treacly mineral oil will save your engine from destruction. If you treat an engine properly, I don't see there's any problem at all with using proper synthetic oil.

I dont think there is a problem with it being too thin. I think that on older engines it seems to be very good an getting past oil seals that were ok with mineral oil.
I've seen this first hand on a mates MKII RS2000.

Just noticed that my car was serviced in April, so I've only done 4000miles since my last oil change.

Spoke to my Dad over the weekend, he used to work for BP and said there's no point using a better oil than the engine is designed to use.

I won't be using the 10w40 that I found in my 200sx, probably use it for cooking or something?

I'll be using 10w30 when I need an oil change.

TOM,
I HOPE YOU DON'T REDLINE THE POOR BUGGER FROM COLD ANYWAY!! I SEE WHERE YOUR COMING FROM WITH YOUR PHILOSOPHY THOUGH ABOUT THICK BEING BETTER BUT I BEG TO DIFFER.
THE THICKER THE OIL THE SLOWER IT TRAVELS AROUND ALL THE NOOKS AND CRANNIES IN THE ENGINE, THINNER OIL GETS TO WORK A LOT FASTER. THE OILS GOT TO GET FROM THE SUMP QUICKLY AND HAS QUITE A WAY TO TRAVEL BEFORE IT REACHES THE CAM ETC...
I THINK THIS DEBATE WILL RAGE ON FOR DECADES!!

I've got Magnatec in my S13. The trick is to get the right one! The Magnatec "for modern and advanced engines" is fully sythetic and doesn't work in quite the same way as the treacle that comes in the regular Magnatec packaging. See:

The oil they used was 'Formula Advanced S' and I paid £20 + vat for it.

Anyone know what oil that is?

Complete U-turn.

If I get my engine fixed I'll be using 10W30 synthetic (probably Castrol RS or Halfords) and nothing else.
It may be coincidence but today was first decent motorway run for the car since I put 10W50 in it.

It was my car making the combine harvester noises at Donington Services this morning.

USE CASTROL 10 60 and an original Nissan Oil Filter. Change every 3-4K depending on your driving style, or mayb u use your car intown alot there for you'll be stuck/idling in more traffic than normal. Its time engine is running more than mileage.

and let the oil warm up for 15-20mins b4 redlining http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Deano,
Nah, don't redline it until the coolant temp is > 78°C. BTW, the coolant temp guage on the dash stays at the bottom until about 60°C. It sits bang in the middle anywhere between about 78 and 90.
Don't forget the oil is pumped under pressure !?
Other thing about thick oil, people say it "clings" better to cams etc. so you get less wear on startup in the fraction of a second it takes the oil to get there. Not at all sure about this.
