Hi all. When the engine is cold I find I have to rev the engine quite a bit (~2000rpm) before I move off in first gear or the clutch can start juddering quite violently. Is that normal?

Hi,
Wouldn't say it was normal. Maybe it's getting quite worn, or is poorly aligned ?
I get a bit of judder when it's hot, but not enough to bother about.
Having said that, I don't usually move off with the revs under 2000 anyway, unless crawling along in traffic.

Guess what, I get juddering too!

I thought it was just me using too few revs (my exhaust is deceptively loud!). I wouldn't have thought the clutch was all that worn, it’s done less than 30k. Maybe it’s related to the rattly thrust bearing or something. Not sure really.

Ben

I've got the juddery clutch and rattling thrust bearing thing as well, my cars now on 50k but has done it ever since about 30k.I'm gonna replace both clutch and bearing in the near future, in the hope it'll cure both problems !!

I get a juddering clutch sometimes too and have also got the ubiquetous (spelling?) whirring wehll bearing too ( Sounds like a cirus performer!!)

Sounds like a common problem. JohnD: Slow down on the keyboard m8 ;-)

Excellent,

Glad its not just my S14....I find it just needs a few more revs when pulling away from cold....no more than 2500Rpm but still more than I would like on a cold start.

Yeh, it doesn't seem quite right, but I'm sure if I bring it to Nissan they'll say otherwise.

Funny old world, my car just started doing the juddery thing when I move off!

Not always when the car is cold but sometimes after I've parked for an hour or two.

I have had this juddering on moving off first thing for a few months now. I thought it was the rear brakes binding. As I am having trouble changing from 1st to 2nd gear (and from the other posts)I suspect it is the clutch. The major service did improve matters with the change of the clutch fluid but it still not right.
What I find stange is that the judder only occurs sometimes and a few extra revs helps.

Memo to self. Must wash and wax car. Thanks BeanS14!!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/cool.gif

It's dawned on me over time that this juddering only happens when I'm running low on fuel.

I'm certain this is a common problem, there has been a thread for it previously. It happens to mine first thing in the morning, the only option is to give it a few more revs (not ideal on a cold start I know).

I get very mild juddering regardless of temperature or petrol level and a guy I know who's had 2 S14s says both of his did the same. Seems endemic.

Still don't get juddering (well depends what were comparing it to maybe - I'm comparing it to the juddering you get on 1.0 metro when the clutch is shagged http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif )
However the whirring bearing noise is still there even though nissan have (according to my invoice) replaced the release bearing !
It's really beginning to get on my nerves.

Same here,
Mild juddering when pulling away from cold, a bit more gas and then a bit of heat in the engine usually does the trick, when it goes judder then bang I'll start to worry!

Yup, me too!
I had juddering when cold

Later I had clutch slip and oh, a noisy gearbox so the whole lot came out
I stuck in a pattern clutch (Japanese though, not some British crap) and got the gearbox rebuilt
Then the gearbox leaked which made the clutch slip and also the clutch would howl on take up so out it came again.
Once you know how and all the bolts have been greased it's a piece of pee-pee to whiz the box out. Can be done in 1/2 hr second time round.
Juddering has gone now

Now who can answer me this question (I know the answer by the way)
What is the extra 10mm diameter section of hydraulic clutch pipe which comes from a T piece near the clutch slave cylinder? The clutch pipe is routed down the bulkhead and to a T piece. From there one outlet goes to the slave and a 10mm goes down the chassis leg about 30cm, turns and comes back and has a bleed nipple on the end.

Answers on a postcard please.....

...hmmm well... I have no idea.
It seems to make bleeding the clutch even harder because that pipe has to be perfectly horizontal. Otherwise when you open up the bleed point, you get air bubbles trapped along the length of it.
So go on then, what does it do ?
