View Full Version : Battery Disconnection

Had a nearside headlight bulb blow last night which required dismantling the air filter. I notice that if it had been on the offside I would have had to disconnect and remove the battery.

If the battery is disconnected and then reconnected will I have to do anything to the alarm/immobiliser or will everything just run as before?

Cheers

JB,

The alarm has its own integral backup battery, so is unaffected by disconnecting the main one.

Remember to switch the alarm off before you disconnect the battery. (key switch at the back of the alarm unit). Otherwise the alarm goes off as soon as you disconnect the battery. Which is a pain when you have your head under the bonnet!

Umm... for those of us new here. Where is the unit ?

I also found two things which I'm not sure are factory standard. I have a little push-switch on the doorframe drivers-side. Haven't got the nerve to push it yet.

Also, there's a small hole cut out of the front of the handbrake cover leather, and what looks to be a button behind it.

any ideas anyone ?

Hi,
The alarm unit is behind the ashtray (very easy to get to if you're a robbing git and know where to look !!!!). I had the unit completely replaced when I bought the car (didn't have a master keyfob), but I don't remember seeing any keyswitch. There are two trimpots and a load of multiway sockets. Would be quite easy to rip them out - or alternatively just disconnect the horn ?
Fairly sure the cutout in the front of the handbrake lever is just for adjusting the handbrake cable, the push switch in the door frame.. isn't this just for turning the "courtesy" light on/off ?

I thought the push switch on the drivers side was to disable the ultrasonics that could be added to the alarm as an option.
If you want to lock/arm the car and leave pet/passengers inside (if the option is fitted)
1)press the door frame switch
2)Within 20 second the "Lock" button on the keyfob
3) The LED will stay off for 10 sec then flash every one sec.
All other alarm functions remain unchanged.
Also if you disconnect the battery it says you have to resync the fob with the alarm when it's reconnected by pressing the "lock" button four times within 8 seconds.

I spent 3 years wondering what that button did.

Now I really am confused.

I don't have any buttons to press inside the car, just a red and a blue one on the fob. Have I misread something or might I have a different security system?

Mike - thanks for the tip about switching the alarm off before disconnection.

Well my keyfob doesn't have red and blue buttons. It's all black, with 'Nissan' engraved on the front, and some Lucas manufacturing stuff on the back.

Maybe there could be a niche market for customised keyfobs ?

Hmmm, is it possible the S14 and S14a have a different alarm system fitted? My '98 has the red and blue buttons on the fob, not the button in the cabin.

Right;

There are 2 versions of the s14 alarm; The original version, as fitted to the pre-facelift models had a single button on the fob, which activated the entire alarm. That little push button mounted next to the drivers door served the same purpose as the operating the blue button on the newer dual button keyfob, ie sets the alarm without arming the internal ultrasonic sensor, so, as David says, you can lock your dog/babies in the car overnight without them tripping the alarm.

I've assumed that the alarm is built into the sounder unit under the bonnet. On the back of this is the key switch to disable the alarm. I didn't have to reset the alarm on reconnecting the battery. My key fob is an all black affair with two round black buttons designed for oriental fingers! I never seem able to push it correctly first time. One of the buttons has a padlock icon on it the other is plain.

I have the push button by the drivers door but nothing around the handbrake.

I was also told that the system has a microwave sensor for protecting the inside of the car. I believe this is behind the centre console somewhere. I have got the alarm manual at home but from memory clarity was not its stong point.

One of the crappier reads I've had, Mike.

Mike: That's exactly the same as mine (I'm assuming the handbrake cutout is something else - I'll check it more at the weekend), all black with two tiny buttons, and the 'lock' one looks to have a padlock (somewhat worn down).

Also a '95 S14.

Michael.

OK so when you say you have to make sure the alarm is off before disconnecting the battery, does that mean off as in press the red button on the fob or off as in turn a key on the unit somewhere?

God I'm confused as hell now.
I've got an S14, pre-facelift with the two buttons on the keyfob. NATS 2 is it ?
Tom

Yeah mine's NATS 2 as well.

JB,

On the back of the alarm sounder under the bonnect there is a key operated switch. It will have a cover over it. I assumme you have got the small Nissan key for it?

Mike, pardon the intrusion...

By the small nissan key, do you mean the red one, which I thought was the same as the black one, but just didn't lock the glove box ? Have I got them the wrong way around ??

Ta,

Michael.

Mike

Have had a look under the bonnet and there is no key slot on the alarm sounder. Must have a different alarm.

I don't think the modern version of the alarm system has that key overide anymore.

Mike_L60

Michael,

No I don't have a red key. Just a little and large in black. Was there a master red key I should have?

Do the later alarms have a chip or something in the key which deativates the immobilisor?

This is sad but in the last two years I've had the car I have not noticed if the glove box is lockable. Possibly because I've never sat in the passenger seat!

PS Anyway, I don't lock glove boxes any more ever since someone broke into my first Nissan (wait for it -- A Sunny, it has taken 4 Nissans to get to a 200!) and found the glove box locked. They opened it with a crow bar.
