Use this thread to post your experiences with places in the South East. I would prefer praise only but if you have any constuctive criticism then post that too.

I will say this once and once only..........

This is NOT a slagging thread and stuff like 'blah blah are a bunch of useless tossers' will not be tolerated. This is to help people out when they need work done on their cars and not to moan about certain people.

If anyone knows of good Main dealers as well (there must be at least 1  ) then please feel free to say. This is not just limited to engine work but any area of the car be it paintshops, tyre fitters etc.

This is just an experiment to see if we can be mature and help people out, if it turns out to be a slagfest it will be closed :p

I may have a rating list at the top of the thread later (similar to in the for sale section) to save people wading through the whole thread to see if a place is any good.

I have used TDi in Barking, Essex and have been very pleased with the work carried out for me, not cheap though they do give a discount to SXOC members http://www.tdi-plc.com/index.html

The Colchester Nissan main dealer is very good for parts, Mark is the man to speak to. He'll give you 10% off if you chat him up a bit (not in a :ghey: way though.:D ).

Dont know about the quality of their workshop though, never used it.

Best place I have found for tyres is Bracknell Tyre and Battery in (not surprisingly) Bracknell. Their prices are always good, but they are always busy so best to go mid-morning or mid-afternoon to avoid the rush. The banter is pretty good as well.

Just had some nasty scratches and stone chips repaired on-site by Flying Colours. The guy did an amazing job, tarted up the whole bodywork and charged me £40.

Can also vouch for Bracknell Tyre and Battery... beat all the other quotes by a long way.

Nissan Chelmsford... do you mean Glyn Hopkin?

Did me a full service but never changed the oil, although they charged me for it. :(

Don't think the car actually moved from where I parked it.

They have a dedicated bloke, Pete, for 200's and skylines etc - he's not an expert but he's pretty good! I trust them with my car - what higher accolade can you expect ? :D

(And if you're a regular they seem to be pretty understanding about costs for diagnosis of suspected faults :D )

Great Hollands MOT, Bracknell, Berkshire

Initially, I thought they were decent enough.

It turns out they have made a complete bodge of my Tubby coolant pipe. They pretty much destroyed it, and used non standard washers and stuff to hide the damage. Now, 3 weeks later it has started to leak profusley, and the current mechanic my car is with (Autocare Maidenhead, best in the area imo) cant stop laughing at their "work".

Now, im not going to say they are *all* bad, as one member on this board has had many a good experience with them. But certainly not for me :(

Japspeed in Southampton did my turbo. It went in one day for gaskets and they found the turbo was iffy. They let me pop down and check it out. Next day, they drove 60 miles+ to Turbo Dymanics to pick up a new tubby (which they got at a good price) and fit it with favouable labour charges.

Got the impression that the boss thought I should be charged more, "that was VERY generous" he went!

Hi folks!
I live in Portsmouth, and would like to know if there is a reputable garage that could take decent care of my S13 for fair prices. Anyone know of any in the area?
Failing that, I have a bit of a stuttering prob that needs solving. trouble is, I'm an utter new boy to motor mechanics :( . If anyone would be prepared to spend a few hours on a weekend giving me some pointers in exchange for some premium beer, that would be the Mutts nuts.
Any help wud be appreciated guys (& girls).

My mate, Lee Crosby of Lee Crosby Auto's. Fast becoming a Nissan specialist thanks to me :D Looks after my 200 and my pick up truck. Also rebuilding a Sr20DET from a Pulsar so he knows his stuff
Works out of Wickford and does anything. Single panel painting to full rebuilds and resprays. Panel beating, welding etc etc.
Mechanically he can do anything from diagnostic services to full engine rebuilds, routine servicing, clutches, gearboxes, anything you want.
Works on anything you can throw at him, no preferences and always has classic cars and Jap imports going in and out of his place

I have just had an engine rebuild from CTM in Ilford (underneath Burton Power).

I have posted a seperate thread raving about the value for money, so to keep it short. Top Blokes, 30 years ish of race build experience, and in my case dirt cheep.

Just remember that its not garage servicing, i.e take your engine to them not your whole car.

HI, my s13 has just refuses to start.
Might need to get the rescue guys to tow it to a garage for fix.
Can anyone pleeeaaase recommmend an honest garage near West Drayton (UB7), near Uxbridge, west london. I know there are other members local as there is often a rather nice shiny s13 outside halfords.

I don't want to get ripped by the usual "it's gonner cost yer" boys.

Then you need to go to Tuning Japanese a.k.a. SAS Surrey Automotive Specialists. They do a great job all round and have huge experience

My car was tuned by them, for it's previous owner. They charged £1000 for fitting an AVC-R, doing the tubby gaskets, and 3 RR runs, where they 'adjusted the A/F ratio' (according to the invoice), and told the previous owner they had remapped it, with a custom chip. Bearing in mind this is an S14a, and at the time, this wasn't possible. No fuel computer was fitted.

They also tuned my mates import scooby, which ate 2 engines :(

I wouldn't take my car there :indiff:

Id just like to plug the work that Dex at Paintec does in Letchworth...

Set up doesn't look all that impressive from the outside, but he has done an amazing job at respraying my car after I had that accident in it.

Work he did on my car for £600 was:

- Swap wing (and fix minor dent)
- Swap bumper and respray (he had to swap round the black part also as the new one was all scratched up.)
- Repair the corner of the bonnet and Respray.
- Repair a broken headlight & bumper bracket.
- Replace Nissan badges with Nissan JDM Silvia badges
- He even saved my stripe on the front wing! :D (My backwards Irish one lol, a perfect match).

Dead pleased with the results  He also works for cash which is good for me ;) I will post up some before and after shots in a bit, however weather outside is awful at the mo. Mono Phil is going there next week so he will be able to give a second opinion.

Cheers Nik, I'll probably go visit them on payday as I'm now starting to slip and slide on dry roads :(

My requirement for some fluid changes and other generic-but-requiring-tools maintenace work is escalating. I'm looking for a good garage recommendation in either Slough, Bracknell, Woking, Guildford or that area. After reading purplepowers' thread about his wheels, I don't have a huge amount of faith in 'local garages' and just wanna take the thing somewhere with a half decent rep for mostly standard work :)

Or, if anyone on the board wants to volunteer for some pocket money :D , I need pretty much complete fluid changes for one thing :)

In Slough I used a garage around the back of the ICI building off Wexham Road.
Think its called Woking garage.

Did my tuby gaskets, cam belt, services and welding. Very good service and good prices. They are not 200SX experts thoug, I tend to take along printouts of the service manual et al to help them along.
The MOT place there also doesn`t mind non CAT S13s.

DONT go to Dan Nissan, they are SHIT!!!

Could anyone possibly put me in touch with a good garage in the Reading area. I would like some basic mechanical work done; possibly to the extent of plumbing in a few gauges, and in the medium to long term changing a clutch.

Woking Garage were good. I took the car in only for an oil + plug change, and when I went back after lunch to pick it up, they'd made a nice note of all the issues they spotted with the car while working on it, including edge-wear on a front tyre, which means my suspicions of bad alignment seem true :)

My S14 needs some TLC after some wa#*er hit the drivers door and didn't leave details the other day!

Plus i've just scrapped thru MOT as i've got some rust eating away at her under the F/O/S wheel arch! :(

Before I start, I want to make it clear that I'm not slagging off the work they do. However, if you want a 4 wheel geometry set-up to anything other than their Nissan S14 standard settings, you'd better make it clear up front, because they will try to charge you extra.

I was quoted £100+VAT by more than one person, even after saying that I'd fitted adjustable arms/top mounts (front caster & camber and rear camber and toe). I turned up when they told me to and had to wait an hour, the bloke doing the work then struggled for half an hour to try to input my preferred settings into the computer (as he hadn't done that more than once before), then it took ages to adjust everything, not helped by losing the computer settings yet again, adjusting the caster rods the wrong way (despite my saying that shorter meant more castor), and the computer being unable to read the caster angle without loads of playing about. I'm not complaining about that. The bloke who did it was very friendly and we ended up getting very close to what I'd asked for (nothing too radical). However, when I went to pay with my £120 cash I was told that it had taken longer because I'd asked for custom settings and that I'd have to pay more. Without going into boring details, I wasn't at all happy with this, refused to pay more than £120 and was told I'd asked for a job I wasn't willing to pay for and told to get out (after I'd paid £120 without a receipt).

Judge this for yourselves, but be warned that anything other than Nissan settings will cost you more than £100+VAT.

I can highly recommend MAX-GT, a new company based in Basingstoke. The main mechanic Paul is a former owner of Miami GT and they fully rebuilt and modified the head of my S13 only to find the bottom end was ****ed too so they ordered and fitted a new engine, (with the modified head on from the other engine) all in one night as I was desperate for the car the next day. They have also done all the work to my 300zx and the gf's MR2 and now I won't take my cars anywhere else even though it's over an hours drive away from me. They even came out to sort the 300 from my driveway in the evening and still charged competitive rates of pay.

anyone in or around Ashford in kent, Trac-art are excellent. had my clutch, cv joint and a few other bits and bobs done down there, and regardless of problems that were unforseen, he still charges what he quoted, which is very rare. anyway, his website is http://www.trac-art.com/ which is soon to be updated.

if anyone does use him, tell him jamie sent you, and im sure he will sort you out with a good deal ;)

Page and bird are great, good tyre prices, quick fitting and very helpful.

They fitted a stainless turbo back exhaust on my s14a for just £40! (I obviously supplied the exhaust) - and the original one was a right b@stard to get apart. I don't think this is a one off because they charged the same a few years earlier on my s14.

Oh yeh, I'll vouch for APT at norwich, I took my 14a there with a suspicious rattle and they made me a cuppa, sorted the problem and didn't charge me a penny. I've booked in for some more work with them at the end of the month.

I know slagging off isn't wanted here but I feel a brief caution about JEM (Japanese Expert mechanics) in colindale - north London is necessary. I went there just before xmas and was quoted £1000 to replace the turbo gaskets on my s14a. They tried charging 3 hours labour at £70 +vat an hour, just for the diagnosis. Thats nearly £250 to tell me i had blowing gaskets.

After a bit of research through the SXOC i found sideways danny from DATMO.

Hes the man and fixed my gaskets for £185 including parts. He even let me hang around for the day and help (attempt to anyway). If you can get to cambs/beds area he is an expert, only works on the 200sx and can do any job you need doing at very reasonable rates. He quotes for jobs and not for time so you won't get an unexpected bill afterwards.

I travel from north london to his garage for all my big jobs, might be 100 mile round trip but I have never found anyone that is so helpful and clued up!

BIG UP DATMO DAN

I have recently had the pleasure of dealing with MJP Eastern Auto based in Brentwood. They can get hold of literally any standard parts and they are discounted too, straight from Nissan, they also do performance bits too. Give em a call on 01277 374201, anytime coz the guy works at home.

If you need work carried out, MJP recommmend, and so do I, Carl from Highwood in chelmsford. He even dragged himself out of bed on a cold Saturday morning to replace my turbo gaskets etc. Give him a call 07767 415804

Has anyone had any experiences with Hitchin Motorcare in Hitchin Herts?:

http://www.sdmicro.ukf.net/hmccars/index.htm

Too late to be of use but for the record they rebuilt the top end of my S13 a while back and did a good job. I recently asked them about a problem on my S14a and they offered sensible advice by phone and e-mail hitchinmotorcare@hotmail.com although I didn't ask them to do the work in the end.

I'll put in a plug for Fairway in Hatfield, who are curently doing a good job of looking after the basics and do a good deal on Toyo tyres. They also did a good job of replacing the turbo to manifold gasket  01707 268740 sales@fairwayhatfield.fsworld.co.uk

They've also diagnosed a failing rev counter but can only offer to replace the dash unit rather than fix the problem or replace the rev counter alone.

Which is why I'm looking for a good auto electrician, preferably one who knows their way arround the dash of a 200SX.

I've got what sounds like the usual problem, rev counter all over the place, bouncing off the stop. This might be cured by fixing 'dry solder' or by fitting a donor rev counter.

Can anyone recommend one? I'm in Herts. / North London but work out towards Milton Keynes / Silverstone so patch includes Beds. Bucks and Northants.

Third view for SAS in Aldershot (also see Amigo's post).

On the plus side:

They fixed the car where my local garage Avantec admitted defeat (I still use them for most servicing)
Firstly found intercooler leaking & replaced with "second hand unit"
This showed further problems & they identified it as the Engine Management Unit - NOT cheap
I got it back fixed and a rolling road graph showing 220bhp - my car is standard apart from the air filter
I got fitter cycling to work / them

On the minus side:

They had the car for 4& a half days
I struggled to get any real info on what they were doing - harder than I would have expected for a small specialist business
A circular scratch (like someone had wiped something up) had appeared when I went down to collect some bits I needed
The bill was well over £1K including parts / labour / VAT

I don't know if this is expensive as I have no previous experience of this kind of problem

Would I go back there?

Yes, if I had engine tuning / turbo problems (I don't 'do' cars) because:
1: I don't know where else to go
2: They are local and I can cycle there / back

Hope this helps

Mike

My car was tuned by them, for it's previous owner. They charged £1000 for fitting an AVC-R, doing the tubby gaskets, and 3 RR runs, where they 'adjusted the A/F ratio' (according to the invoice), and told the previous owner they had remapped it, with a custom chip. Bearing in mind this is an S14a, and at the time, this wasn't possible. No fuel computer was fitted.

They also tuned my mates import scooby, which ate 2 engines :(

I wouldn't take my car there :indiff:

In my limited experience, ECU's either work, or they don't work.

Sensors may fail / work intermittantly etc - but the ECU is go/no go. If you've got a 14a, if they swapped the ECU they'd also have to swap the immobiliser bits, give you new keys etc etc

It was the younger guy, can't remember his name. The older guy dyno'd my mates scooby there for the second time but didn't adjust the centre diff (it's a type-RA) so the results were screwed up, so basically wasted my mates money, which is a bit annoying. The younger guy knew that you needed to set the diff up to run it on the dyno when he did it the first time round....

Danny is the older guy who I believe is more on the BMW side of things. Carl is the younger guy who is more jap/turbo orientated.

When talking to Carl once, he hopped onto his mobile and phoned someone for some second advice who I believe is a famous figure around this forum?

Anyone needing tyres or alignment for cars or motorbikes (including bike MOTs) in Kent/Sussex should check out MTMC in Tonbridge.

They used to be based in Teston just outside Maidstone but they had to move when the lease was up.

The bloke in charge is Harry and he's a top bloke who knows lots about tyres and suspension.

He's just spent mega-money on a state of the art 3D alignment monster and he knows how to use it

Give him a call on (01732) 369888 or 369880

They're at Deacon Trdg Est Morley Rd, Tonbridge, TN9 1RA

I've used them for bike and car tyres for years and had good advice from them. Two of my mates and Karl (Blueboy) off here have been to him and been very impressed with the results and the service.

Newbies here! Should have my S13 pretty soon(this week) but have to bring it through to MOT before I could have some fun with it.

Is there any recommendation for MOT tester/garage near Sidcup SE area? I am looking to have a check up 1st before it runs the test so give it has a higher chance to pass - afterall it's a classic car!!

Highly recommend Dan Perkins in Slough. (Nissan Dealer)

I have had my Skyline serviced there since I bought it, and they have been fantastic considering its a gray import. They usually have a few S14s, 300ZX, 350Zs in whenever I go there. Also the MD has a 240Z in the front window, very nice refurbed car.

From what I understand they will also be selling and maintaining the GTR when its available in the UK.

They show a healthy interest in the skyline and the tuning scene. Although bear in mind, they only want to work on 'standard' stuff as a main dealer. Of course, main dealer prices, but a level 1 service for ~£150 in a 6 cyl engine is reasonable for me. They have always offered a courtesy car as well.

Also they can pretty much source any part in the Nissan catalogue, and are quite happy printing of FAST pages to confirm prior to ordering. I have sourced a few bits for the skyline already, and again, no shipping costs.

Well worth a trip if your looking for routine maintanance.

Hello!
My name is Chris. I don't want to advertise myself but I would be able to help around SW London area, I know one garage at Kingston where I have access to theyr equipment.
Ramp, welding tools, pipe bender, s/s exhausts which I was dealing with, VORTEX exhaust technology, tig welder, snap-on diagnostic equipment.
I used to work for them but .... whatever left in friendly atmosphere so still can go back and do some work myself.

Also looking for some one with S13 around SW London, good to know people.

Just want to recommend Colchester Rewinds.

They do machining, welding, fitting and fabricating etc.

They've just driven out to my Trevor in Chelmsford (about an hour there and back) and fitted a helicoil to the aluminium block for a very reasonable charge.

It saved me having to take the engine out again after one of the head bolts got ripped out pulling the head down.

Really nice guys. I got their name from Geoff (Bubbles on here).

They can be contacted on 01206 768886

Also has anyone ever used Sanspeed?

Right, binned the 200, now got a GS300 that's plagued with electrical problems (I do pick 'em). Anyone know a decent mobile auto electrician London area? Car won't charge very much, getting annoying only being able to drive it 30 minutes out of every 7 hours.

For many years I've been looking for a garage local to me that understand cars like the 200SX's.

Luckily one has opened near to me, and thus far they've proven excellent!

http://www.motorworx.net/

They have Evo's, Scoobies and Nissan Pulsars themselves :)

If you go there make sure you mention me or the club so they realise we're connected.

NOTE: Any service done there gets a dynotune run as part of it :)

I got my 4 wheel alignment (http://www.iamotorsport.co.uk), done by IA Motorsport in Sittingbourne a couple of months ago. and the car has been spot on ever since.

I cant believe there not already on this list, i cant recommend them enough, they have even helped me with a couple of boost issues ive had. Ian the main man is very knowledgeable and owns a very cool old skool ps13 so they know nissans.

They have also just got the facility for Nistune Tuning (http://www.iamotorsport.co.uk/engine-ecu-tuning.php), which hopefully ill be getting done soon. :D
