Well, I'm not. My balls are too small.

But who is ?
A mate of mine has a poxy rover 200.. but he don't use the clutch and consequently his gear changes commensurately quick http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Anyone doing this in their S14 ?
Personally I'm not brave enough, I can't afford a new gearbox. Maybe I should buy a ****ty fiesta and practise in that.

Dunk the powerslider must.

Oh yeah - left foot braking ?
I'm starting this now. Great for speed bumps, get on the brake with the left foot, keeping half throttle in second... takes up much better.

Eh? No clutch?
How do the gears synchronise their speeds?
You would surely be pulling hard against the synchros until the engine speed dropped to the required RPM and then it would pop into gear?

Power changing however uses the clutch but you don't back off the throttle. You keep it pinned and just do super quick changes. This is rotten to the clutch though. Imagine those poor little springs in the centre plate getting hammered every change!
I've seen it done and it feels cruel!
You also need to do it in the dry or you'll spin the wheels especially first to second!

Not if you've got TC + LC + FT shift http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Far too many mods to list here, it takes up far too much space and after being asked very nicely I've decided to shorten the sig (Is that a WOOHOO I hear??)
I, have NO SMELLY TREE, have no plans for a smelly tree and do not want a smelly tree, EVER!!!
Do not take offence to anything I say, even though I probably mean it. I am more than slightly mad, so just chill de feck oooot, ok!

my understanding is, if you're quick enough, and at high revs, you can bung it from one gear to the next without anything breaking ! Takes some practise apparently. Been in the car with someone doing it - you get amazingly quick gear changes, and suprisingly smooth if you get it right.

If you are accelerating and come off the throttle and yank it out of say, 2nd and push it hard towards 3rd you have to consider the engine HAS to slow say, 1500 rpm as an example before the gears will engage with each other. It simply is not possible with a normal synchromesh gearbox to do this quicker than you can with clutch use. The synchromesh cone does not give enough friction to slow the engine faster than it naturally slows. If you do use the clutch, all the synchromesh has to slow down before engaing gear, is one gear, one drive shaft and the centre plate. This is easy for it hence quick changes when using the clutch but it will not be able to slow the engine down too, which is what you are asking it if you don't disengage the clutch!

You may be thinking of racing gearboxes which have gears with widely spaced teeth which are designed to be banged straight in. Once they are engaged the engine is forced to slow immediately to match the road speed in 3rd

The quickest gear change possible in a normal road car is power changing which uses the clutch but you don't back off the throttle as explained above

Dan, what is TC + LC + FT shift?

Hmm, I guess it won't do the syncros much good then ? I think the S14 has double coned syncros doesn't it ? Doubt there's much friction material left on mine after the mileage it's done but there we are. I was presuming you have to match the revs up approximately with the throttle in between changes.

Anyway, cheers ! I won't be trying it http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

I used to do this with my old fiesta, but I wouldn't recommend it for the 200. You have to be pretty brutal to get a really quick shift, don't think it's worth the bills if you get it wrong!

LC = Launch Control
TC = Traction Control
FT shift = Full throttle shift

An excellent conbination for lightning acceleration.

Totally agree! Was talking to Pete at SE about this FT. Said at the time I dont think I could bring myself to FT shift my 9 year old S13 - seems a bit brutal.
I have however, been practising Ft shifting in my company car - an Oct '98 Avensis 1.8. Nice car - can drive it 100% virtually anywhere (lift off oversteer anyone?! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif)
Never hit the limiter when doing it yet, 3rd-4th and 4th-5th really make a difference (obviously 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd do). Had it from my old boss at the end of May with 94,500 miles on the clock.
Went in for 108,000 service the other day (13,000 in less than 3 months!!!). They said, and I quote: "Well, the clutch needs replacing and the gearbox is a bit notchy going into 5th".
On top of this it needs at least 3 new tyres and some combi-computer thingy which does the tripmeter etc, costing over £900 fitted!
The lease company have tol the dealer to take the box off,strip it down and give them a price. They'll then decide wether to fix it/replace the clutch or let it go off the fleet! Im gutted - the lease is 4 years or 120,000 miles, but, seeing as they're gonna pay £900+ for a little gizmo, it looks like they'll make me keep it the full 4 years!
