ok, this might sound stupid, but how do you do burnouts?

How do you get the front wheels only to brake???

No braking - just get mental power, no grip and spin the rear till the tyres explode!

I guess the proper drag cars must have front brakes for these sorts of antics.

..or perhaps not......

Nonsense!
Almost any RWD car can do stationary burnouts
It feels bad for the car but it's not too bad. You need good rear shocks to keep the axle / wheels from bouncing or tramping and a lot of guts or no mechanical sympathy

Here's how to do it

First gear and about 4000rpm depending on car
Dump the clutch fast and immediately jump on the brake pedal with your left foot. The brakes work much more on the front than the rear.
Next you will need to balance the car somewhere between stationary and stalling using the brake pedal. You will also need to use more throttle as the rear brakes will try to slow the rear wheels. There is usually enough power to overcome the rear brakes but enough front to keep the car still.
The rear tryes will also heat up, get sticky which will also try to stall the engine as you will get more grip to the road

Stationary burnouts feel and are pretty cruel to the car but hey, who cares?
I do in my S14! I could do wicked burnouts in my S12 Silvia but that was a piece of **** so I didn't care!
My S14 has enough power to break traction without having to dump the clutch but it tramps for some reason. Not sure if it's the rear tyres being weird or if the shockers are finished. It handles fine......
85,000 miles OK for rear shocks anyone?

To prove any car can do it, heres a 50hp Datsun 120Y doing one, though the rear wheels are on a wet patch!

Wow, sounds complicated...

Don't really wanna do those stationary burnouts, I bet they'll cook my rear brakes for sure, and they need to be replaced as it is...

Anyway thanks for your replies!

Don't worry about your rear discs
They take a hammering when braking from speed so should be able to cope with it as you won't be braking as hard when burning!

You have things like engine mounts, clutch centre plate, gearbox, propshaft centre mount, diff and half shafts to worry about before you worry about before that!

Just look at how the Japs drive them!

Try it at least once on nice smooth tarmac
Practice in the wet too!
