View Full Version : Fuel pump est mort

Sorry for the latin.
Fuel pump is dead, went on the A50, first of all it was fine for cruising and underfuelled like a bastard on accelleration (another use for my mdm-100)... got to where I was going, and couldn't start the thing at all.
Anyone replaced one ? Screws in the tank behind the RHS passenger seat as a big module containing the pump, level sensor, and fuel feeds. Somewhat suprised by the £222+vat price tag.
I see there is mention of some special tool for taking it out in the service manual. Anyone done it ? Any help would be great, as the car is now 60 miles away until I can get the train over to fix it when the part comes in !!! Wondering if a chain wrench would get it off if anyone could check the clearance for me ?

Special tool for that job in our workshop is a blunt chisel and a small hammer http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Careful not to make too many sparks though....

Nice one, cheers. I guess if I pop across the road to the nissan dealer to ask to borrow the tool I won't get far then ? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
Am I right in thinking the whole lot is replaced in one go then ? Do I need a gallon of boiling water and geoff capes to pull off the fuel pipes ?

Can they sieze if they're not immersed in fuel enough ? i.e. if I only fill the tank half way ?

Tom > Would it be worth you enquiring about an uprated fuel pump? If you intend to tune the car you may need one and now is definetely a good time.

Also, I bet an uprated Bosch or whatever make would be cheaper than the Nissan original.

Can anyone jump in here with part numbers for a fuel pump to help Tom?

I went for the HKS fuel pump (1407-RN022). It comes with the complete cradle and filter as well as an in tank pressure regulator. Matt_S got hold of it for me and it was about £210. It took about an hour to do.
I would get an uprated pump or get one from a scrappy either way you'll save money.
Norris do a group "a" for £176 inc http://web.norrisdesigns.com/product_detail.asp?ccode=24&id=2&cid=144 .
Also do a search for fuel pumps on the forums as there were loads of part numbers quoted.

I have an ND group "a" fuel pump which seems highly effective ie. 15mpg!

Tom_S14
25-09-2001, 09:15
Woah ! 15mpg, is that worst case or average ?
It's a bit of a shame I rely on my car so much every day to get me to work etc... or I wouldn't mind it off the road for a while.
I went and ordered the nissan bit first thing on monday morning so I could get something through as quick as I could, so unfortunately it's too late http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif
What should the standard fuel pump be good for out of interest ? Is the fuel pump a limitting factor rather than the injector rail pressure regulator then ?

I'm not going to answer your question because I am the mickey mouse of auto mechanics not knowing my arse from a fuel pump however in Max Power when they featured a 1000 BHp Skyline the guys who built it (Top Secret) said they had to install 3 fuel pumps to make sure there was enough fuel to match the air intake from the massive turbo's.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe an uprated fuel pump could be an essential part of a performance improvment but better minds than mine can tell you what order these things should be done in.

The fuel injectors will probably need replacing at around 350bhp and then the fuel pump shortly after.

After that you'll be getting approx' BA (Bugger all) MPG http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Bean,
350bhp eh ? Probably safe for a while then I reckon http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif Still haven't fixed my bumper yet, need new tyres, fuel pump gone.... where does my money go ? Beer ? Kebabs ? Chinese takeaways ?
Worked out the little bugger must have pumped about 6000 gallons of petrol before it died - not bad going I suppose.

I'm only going by what the ND catalogue says so please don't take my ramblings to be gospel.

Most people don't understand or believe a word a say, including me. Of course, this could be down to my appreciation of fine malt whiskies and mind blowing chemicals? (alegedly) http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

What were we talking about again? I've just drank a bottle of wine and I'm off to play Squash in 30mins, should be fun http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif Pub after!!!!!!!!!! ra ra ra ra ra CLUB.

I'm worried you drink too much. Course, you wouldn't catch a fine upstanding citizen like me getting pissed as a bastard http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Fuel pump fixed. Not that pleasant with ya forearm down the petrol tank in the pouring rain trying to put the new one back in, but not exactly a difficult job. Cheers for your help. The blunt chisel+hammer worked a treat http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Sorry, kind of went off on one the other night.

Squash was interesting, normally it's natural instinct to put your hands out when you're about to fall, not when your drunk, you just use your face!!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

You can never drink enough, I digress.

Are you going to the rolling road thingy in Bristol. I want to see that quick shifter and strut brace you've got.

Tom

Yes, I'm going to the Rolling Road in Bristol . Not sure if I'll be on the rollers because I can't afford the new exhaust at the moment.

Are you coming along? It would nice to put a name to a face after months of internet correspondence.

Yeah, I'll be there. Always like to have a power curve for my car. Just don't feel complete without one, if only I was joking http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
Fingers crossed nothing else breaks, falls off or anything before then. Are you going to get a rear strut brace too then ?

Tom

Bean
27-09-2001, 15:25
I'm trying to get hold of one but the place I got the front brace from doesn't do the rears yet.

Not sure what make the front one is or I'd try and get it from elsewhere.

Have you bought any more bits for your car recently? I've just ordered an Ecotek Valve.

What did you pay for your exhaust?

The exhaust came to around 500 quid.. bit more I think, about 550. He was very flexible about paying though. I split it over 2 months.
I was planning to buy some stuff for the car, but then this lamp post came along and hit me... then my fuel pump went... and also my new landlord wanted half a year's rent up front !?£$%^ Jeeeez.
I think what I might do is sort out the suspension. I always want to go faster in a straight line, no amount of power would be enough, but I want better cornering.

It's a sort of wig, the Victorians used to wear them.

Yes, that's right, it's a sort of wig the victorians used to cover up genital warts.
One frequently uses the word merkin in substitute for firkin. One might go down the foxy merkin for a pint for example.
So are you going to the rolling road then geoff ? (with or without your merkin)

You must have missed out on the national curriculum Geoff. Merkins are now a core part of the syllabus http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif Every man should be able to hold his head high and know the truth about the Merkin.
