The other week I fitted an ND adjustable actuator. I fitted it to the car with the arm the same length as the standard jobby as I hadnt had the timing retarded and didnt have a boost gauge. After a jaunt to Demon Tweeks yesterday I am now the proud owner of a nice CAI boost gauge. After fitting the gauge I took the car out and ran it under full boost up a hill a couple of times to get an accurate reading. This is where it gets confusing....
I'm reading 1.2bar (17psi I think) ish. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/eek.gif So if thats a true reading why the hell isnt the car pinking away like mad or just generally running like a bag of spanners? I havent had the timing touched yet, and the ND actuator is only supposed to go to 15psi. Also to be honest the car dont feel much quicker than with the standard actuator. The cars running perfectly though??? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/confused.gif
Dodgy gauge or a fluke?
Anyone else experienced similar?
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Its not just the length of the actuator arm that determines how much boost it'll hold, it also depends on the strength on the spring inside.

Factory boost cut on an S14 is at 19psi. If you're worried then just turn the boost down to about 1bar (15psi, like mine). Also, the car might not feel much quicker, but get a mate with a stopwatch to time you between 60 (off boost) and 100 in fifth at standard and upped boost and I'm sure you'll be surprised...

Does that mean that even though I have fitted an uprated actuator and wound the arm out fully I may still be getting a higher boost?

I think it does Darksurfer... the guy at ND told me if I fitted the actuator with the arm the same length I wouldnt have to worry about the timing but I am worrying now! The cars running o.k. but could it be doing damage un-beknown to me??

Even if I am running at a higher boost because of the spring, I can not see it doing any damage to the car as you only need to retard the timing once the arm is wound in about half way, 15PSI

There is alot of travel on the arm to get to halfway on the threads.

If it has increased the boost it is slight, and I have not noticed it.

I have also spoken to ND about this, they said the car will be fine like that, retard the timing once you wind her up.
