Hi guy's

As an new user of the board I have found loads of info on making the 200 go faster but rather less on how to make it stop better.

I have heard of skyline brake conversions but how much are they and who fits them?
and are "used" callipers/disks really a good idea?

Obviously I would like a new kit possibly an AP kit, has anybody got one? If so how much was it, where did you get it and is it any good?

I've got an S14a with 17s and want the largest disk size that will fit. Thanx for your help.

Conversions to Skyline GTR brakes are usually based around second hand gear (normally when a GTR owner decides to upgrade, or stacks their motor). The GTR Brembo setup is probably the best you'd want to fit on a 200sx (most of the aftermarket 4-pot kits weigh in at aroung £1000, compared to the GTR kit at around £500) and it bolts straight on (you can fit it yourself), but requires at least 17" wheels to fit the standard 330mm GTR disks. If you're worried about buying second hand brakes then you can always fit new disks and pads and have the calipers checked over and reconditioned if necessary. I've got a set of GTR brakes awaiting fitment on my S14a, so if you need and more info just let me know.

I agree with Ben,

I have a R33 conversion on my S14a (see readers rides in my profile for pics). I had them fitted at ND and the whole setup cost me £300 2nd Hand....the discs were used but bear in mind the cost difference and it is still well worth it.

The Discs are HUGE.

£300, is that all it cost for discs, calipers and fitting?

Seems damn cheap?

Has anyone contemplated Tarox braking systems. They do a 330mm disc 6 pot caliper kit (includes pads and all uprated brake lines) for £1349+VAT?

Bean,

The R33 setup was a steal I must admit, I would quite hapilly have paid £500, but the guy was pretty desperate for the cash.

I have heard mixed opinions on the TarOx brakes...I would steer clear. I doubt thats is much improvement if any than the GTR Discs/Calipers, and I would rather pocket the difference.

NO, not at that price anyway. I believe AP do a similar spec system for about £1000.

Get the Skyline brake setup, I've been in Ross' car and the stopping power is phenominal!!!

If, when I uprate my brakes it will definetely be for the Skyline system.

I do like the skyline setup and I'm sure it will vastly improve the stopping power of the S14a. However, I very much like the idea of 330mm grooved discs & 6 Pots too and would prefer to get something brand new rather than 2nd hand. A brand new setup from Brembo cost in the Region of £3.5K doesn't it?
What mixed things have you heard about the Tarox's Ross? This is a new kit for the 200SX which has only been brought out a couple of weeks ago (so I've been told) and I have never seen them advertised for an S14a before.
What alternative "brand new systems" would anyone recommend at a budget of £1500-ish?

I cant say about the complete set up, I did not think that it was available, so maybe it is a new option recently on the market. One question is: why have Tar Ox only just bought this out when production of the car has ceased?

I heard that the discs were prone to fade and there were equal products available for less money - more the fact that they are expensive for what they are, than the job they do.

I just figured that if the R33 setup is designed to stop the heavier Skyline then it would do an even better job on a (fairly) light 200SX. When I took Bean and JohnD76 out the other week I braked heavilly from around 80mph and even with the extra weight in the car (no offence guys!), I was also amazed at the distance we stopped in.

I dont really know of other options available, and to be honest, I can only recommend on the setup I have....

No offence taken, I have enjoyed my food and beer over the last few years. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Didin > I guess the more money you have to throw at the brakes the better they could be? All I know is that Ross is probably running about 250bhp? and his brakes were more than up to the job with a car full of people. I reckon if Ross had his car tuned to over 350-400bhp they'd still be fine.

Yep, I'm sure the Brembo's are fine for more than 300bhp. Its just that my obsession is I'm looking for something which is quite visually appealing at the same time as increasing braking performance, and these are the best looking I've seen so far (imo). I just don't wanna go a spend loadsa dosh and be dissappointed with the performance side of it. My friend has a full Tarox conversion on an Integrale (10 pots!!)and praises them to hell. That doesn't mean the 6 pots are gonna brilliant though. Was just hoping someone out here had some experience with them.
I guess I'll keep looking around for some alternatives - my front pads will need changing soon, hence looking for a whole upgrade kit at the same time.

Thanks for the info gents.

Interesting to hear how good skyline set up is. Ive spoken to ND as they carry out this convesion but Simon has told me that he is struggling to source used components at the moment. Does anyone know where else I could source the R33 set up. I need better brakes fast!

You're best off posting a WANTED message on the GTR website www.gtr.co.uk. (http://www.gtr.co.uk.)

You should be able to source the front brakes for <= £500.

I only got as far as advertising it on this board, not a very clever idea as everyine on here already has a 200!

Other short term commitments mean I have to put off replacing it for the time being. And as I have finally paid it off I can look forward to not having Nissan Finance on my back each month.

Why,you know of someone who may be interested?

There is a guy on www.gtr.co.uk (http://www.gtr.co.uk) adveretising the front brakes off an R33 GTR for £500 if anyone is interested.

Have a look under the "buy and sell" section.

Unless you bought this set John?

No Ross, Unfortunately all of my friends and people I know have been bitten by the German Bug - inc my Mrs!! :-( If its not a Beemer, V-Dub, Audi or Benzo, they're not interested.
Its just that I would find it quite difficult to sell my 200 after having spent so much money, time & effort in modding it like you have. I guess you never really get your money back for all the mods.
I've actually seen you cruising around the Berkshire area in your 200 - quite a while back though, on the way to work - very nice motor.

Cheers Didin,

I do feel like I should hang onto it for a while longer, especially as I only had the T28 Hybrid last month.

After the Shire Horse meet there were a couple of people advising me to hang onto it. I've gotta spend some cash doing up my house at the moment so I have no choice.

I know what you mean about German cars, the office car park is bloody full of 3 series (one nice AC Scnitzer), and Mercs. That one reason I opted for somthing a bit different.

Do you work near Maidenhead?

Diddn

So I guess you're going toward the 300bhp Power band!! I'd like to get mine tuned to around 300 horses. At the mo, engine is bog standard, been spending all my time tuning up the wife's beemer - that took priority because we use it most on the weekends & I end up driving - and it is SOOOOOO Slow. So I thought I'd add an exhaust & induction system, not much but enough to give it a tiny bit of extra "oomph" I suppose. Plus its an Auto!!

Next year I'll be starting on the 200, slowly though, not all in one shot. Thats why I'm gathering as much info as possible now. Probably start with a brake upgrade 'cause the pads need changing in the next couple of months.

I work in Burnham - which is the area I remember seeing your motor.

Rossy
26-09-2001, 11:33
I live in Burnham (work in Langley), so no surprise you have seen me around here.

You will have to pop along to the Shire Horse meet (when a date can be agreed on!).

I will keep an eye out for your car! (nice wheels by the way).

Did you have the T28 Hybrid fitted at the same time as the boost upgrade?

If you didn't, how did the boost upgrade feel on the T28 compared to the new one?

I'd be interested to know in what order you did your uprgades, brakes, exhaust, Turbo etc...?

Glad some of us got through to you! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Nice one Bean! I know I wont get the money back that I have spent on the mods so I may as well enjoy it for the time being as opposed to flogging it to some little oik who wont appreciate it.

I got the boost upgrade fitted before the replacment Turbo. Norris mentioned then that the Turbo was showing signs of wear so it was just a case of waiting for it to pack up.....and it did, around 6,000 mile later.

The new Super Hybrid made hell of a difference, the old one was well and truely worn so probabbly not puching out anywhere near what it should have. The order in which I did my upgrades is below:

Wheels,
Springs, Dragger, brakes, boost upgrade all in one go (that was a nice drive home! hahaha).
er, Turbo.

How many miles has your turbo done?

Diddn

Do the S14a's have a brake pad wear sensor on them to warn that is time to change the pads?

Damn, bet that was an expensive month!!!

My Car/Turbo has only done 42000 miles and it still feels strong. I'll get the boost upgrade eventually and replace the Turbo when it goes, not before hand.

I may of sourced some Skyline brakes/wheels for a cheap price (circa £500), I'll keep you posted!

I plan to do mods in the following order:

Exhaust
Springs
Brakes & Wheels
Boost Upgrade
FMIC maybe

I've got an interview next week, so hopefully that will feed the habit.
