View Full Version : Changing the turbo
Hi everyone - I've just got a 90 manual, and it needs a new turbo. Can anyone let me know how hard it is to get the turbo on and off the car - I've got no garage so I don't want to end up with a pile of parts in the road. I assume you have to plug the water and oil lines with something? Do you have to jack it up or can you get at it all from above? Thanks http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
ps how bad does the turbo have to be for it to get by on just having new bearings? can someone recommend a cheap place to get a recon turbo in the south east?
when t25's go pop, its cheaper to source a new one than have them repaired. its about 180 quid for a service and rebalance if it can be saved.
You will need to get underneath it to do the job. theres no need to go wild with blocking the oil and water feeds as they dont leak much (well the water does a bit but it soon stops - just dont take the rad cap off when you have disconnected the water feed to the turbo). you need to take the heat shields off and unbolt the turbo at the elbow, or if you have decent bolts on the exhaust, seperate it there (DANGER!! the bolts snap quite easily) then undo the exhaust manifold bolts, most can be got at from the top, a couple from underneath (bit fiddly) but an hour or so's work in total, couple of hours to allow for ciggie breaks and kicking tools around. There isnt many parts so you wont have a driveway full of bits.
hope that helps.

Hours job my arse.
Took me 4 hours (1.5 kicking cats, dogs, tools etc) to get the heat shields off, god knows what I was playing at.
You make it sound so simple Chimp.
Perhaps I need to be more agressive.

get yer tools out. Look at what yer gotta do. then do it. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
i say an hours/2 hours job thats what it took last weekend. And slightly quicker to refit it. BUT the first time took approx 4 days due to snapped bolts in the turbo, re-tapping etc.. can be a total arse. Just pray them tinkers dont snap, it takes a second to sink in, then blam! cry yerself to sleep.... <eerie music>

Quick tip:
The night before your gunna do the job cover everything in WD40, don't be shy, use a whole can of the fcking stuff and let it work its magic overnight.
There is NOTHING more annoying than snapping the heads of bolts.
Alos, WD40 is ace for washing your hands afterwards if you don't have any of that fancy cleaning paste stuff.
Thanks guys - doesn't sound too bad, although I'll be doing it in the street, not on a drive...What gaskets, sealants etc do you need to put it back on?
Chimp, I think it will need an exchange turbo then - it sounds like a bag of bolts in a tumble drier at the moment. Another 500 quid I havent got http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Another thing.
While you've got your spanners out check the rocker cover bolts are tight.
I took mine off for a clean last night and all of em were loose as feck.

Another thing.
Am I right in saying that when putting a new turbo on you need to charge it with oil before starting the engine properly? This involves taking out a fuse somewhere and turning the engine over. Not sure what the right procedure is, anyone else know?
(soz if u already knew that)

If you want a good second hand T25, give Simon Norris a ring and ask if he has any used turbos from his Japanese engines. He sold me one for £150 and he gives you a word of mouth guarantee for 6 months, not a proper guarantee, but I dont think you need one as they are in such good condition.

what the feck is "word of mouth guarantee"?!
You know what I mean.
bond_200, that sounds just the ticket. Thanks

you do have to prime the turbo, remove the fuse to the fuel pump or remove all the plugs then turn over a few times and hey presto oil in the turbo. Turbo Technics recommended I use normal engine oil to prime and run for a while and then switch to sythentic.

Most helpful guys. What new gaskets and fasteners will I need to get hold of? Want to be prepared... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

I've got a t25 in the garage its not new but worked perfectly before i had the t28 put on.
just a thought.

Barry - cheers mate, but I've just got hold of one already... Did you change gaskets etc for the swap, or just slap a load of sealant stuff on?

Barry.
eeeek...
Dont use that crap gasket suff on yer 1) exhaust manifold 2) manifold to turbo. Its pants. it gets so hot that as soon as it hardens it can crack and fall away leaving you with a leaky gasket again. The manifold-turbo gaskets are £10 from nissan. Dunno about the exhaust ones.
Good luck
The manifold to cylinder nead gaskets are £2.40 + vat each and the gaskets for the turbo to manifold/turbo to downpipe cost me £30. Agree with Chimp on this one, don't use sealant stuff, it's pain in the ar5e job and you realy dont't want to keeping taking it all apart.

I agree, stay well clear of the gasket sealant and just clean up the surfaces as much as possible, then torque the bolts up properly, they won't leak for a long time, if you take your time !!!

Thanks again guys. I know those gaskets were all replaced about 1 1/2 years ago - any chance of re-using them? This really is a helpful place http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
No way can you reuse the exhaust to manifold gaskets, they just separate when you take the manifold off, and you have to scape them off the cylinder head and the manifold. The turbo to manifold/turbo to down pipe, maybe. I did when i fitted the mongoose and was lucky to get a way with it, but at the end of the day you are better off getting new gaskets. If the turbo to manifold doesn't seal properly, you will lose power, make a whole load of noise ('bad blowing exhaust noise' as opposed to 'nice exhaust note noise') and you will have to take the darn thing off again to seal it (1 hours, yeah right......).
Do ya feel lucky punk? well do ya?
