Winter Tyres

Anybody feeling the urge for these this year?

The long range predictions says snow... I guess north of the boarder it's more likely, but most of us got a dusting, and the icey conditions for the following weeks made getting about quite exciting.

Winter tyres pretty well solve this problem, and typically get put on from November to March.

If anybody would like a set, I'll be glad to get some options and prices :)

Might even be able to work out some tasty wheels and tyre deals ;)

Could be interested in tyres for the 205. Don't know sizes at the moment though. Expecting lots of snow on the flatlands here now!

Yes... you can manage without if you're lucky, but if you can run to them, winter tyres make driving safer and easier for sure.

Winter tyres are definitely worth it people. When we lived in the Alps, I drove to the garage (306 DTurbo) on Proxes at less that 15mph all the way, sliding everywhere. Had some dunlop winters fitted (can't remember the model) and drove home again almost like it was dry tarmac!!!

I have some subzeros I can do in White or Gunmetal with polished lip for £50+VAT per wheel...

Yokohama winter tyres to match are £45+VAT each, fitting to those wheels. Can probably find cheaper or more expensive winter tyres :)

on a front wheeled drive car would you need a set of 4? or would 2 suffice for the going/stopping/steering?

id assume summer tyres on the rear would make things a bit interesting

If you hit the brakes in snow / ice and you only have fronts, it's pretty much guaranteed that your rear end with pirouette around the front and you I'll nd up facing backwards.

The front of th car will have loads of controll but the rear won't keep up with what you are asking the fronts to do

Do you know what the cheapest winter tyres you can get for the following are -

Not sure what profiles I could get away with..

2 * 17 x 9.5

&

2 * 17 x 9 wheels?

And

16 x 7 / 16 x 8 wheels (not 100% on the sizes for these)

Ideally want to run my 17s but everywhere im looking its like £130.00 per corner

17x9.5 are minimum 245 really.

17x9 are 235 minimum.

16x7 are 195

16x8 are 215.

You can obviously stretch them an run smaller ones, but that's the sizes we'd have to recommend.

You'll be looking for 17s at around £350-£400 for a set.

16s will be around £300 a set, possibly a bit less.

I cant quote exactly as all stocks are now in a constant state of flux :( I could quote cheapest now, and by tomorrow they could well be gone.

Ive just had quotes for Minerva (?) @ £98 + vat fitted for 225s and in stock. Brand wise, as long as its a snow tyre, and not 'summer' Falkens like I have atm, Im sure it will be OK. BMs are notoriously bad in the snow, so I want to try and keep it as mobile as poss!

Contemplating putting the 225s all round as the 255s werent in stock. 245/40 are within 3% ratio tho, so now trying to find a set of them...

Here's a vote for winter tyres. I fitted some M&S tyres to the 306 and it transformed it in the snow.

That said, I'd echo the comments earlier about fitting 4. I picked mine up with rims from ebay, and found them a pair at a time. The first pair went on the front, for obvious reasons, but going round corners became "entertaining" with a massive difference in the level of grip front and rear. Never had so much oversteer in a FWD car!

Evilchap - if I can find some rims, I'll definitely be interested.

or maybe a smaller set of wheels they would need to be 5x112 and light and 18+ to clear the brakes :)

I had exactly that experience in the 306. Managed to get a pair on rims, so chucked them on the front, but didn't get the second pair until a week later. Oversteer everywhere!

Ok, I quit this is just stupid now, its December !

Its regulary under 7 degrees when I drive the car, and I hate paying money for something that I cant use because I havent got it.

I paid for these in September when it was going to be a 2 week wait ... in October it was going to be a 2 week wait .... in November it was going to be a 2 week wait .. Its Now december, no wheels, no tires

I have chased this every few days - trying both Yokohama and Hankook.

Yokohama aren't getting any more.

Hankook say they're arrived, they're in the docks, but seemingly unloading their 100+ containers at random so still wont give me a firm date.

It's hugely frustrating not being able to supply things like this, I am sorry for the delays and messing about :(

I am considering using my current wheels as winter ones as they are slowely delaminating anyway and geting a nice set for summer use .. I didnt care about wheels until I started browsing your site and its pure porn

anyway ... any ideas if winter wheels tires can be "stretched" as the current rubber has a slight stretch on it to get it under the arch line

or is it best of keeping them bendy and flexible ?

The construction of the tyre is pretty much like a normal one I think - it's just the tread compound and layout that's different, so in theory it should be fine...

However if you are planning on heading out in snow, and you have an MX5 so you'll have some fun, I would suggest a non-stretched tyre would be sensible to give your wheels a chance should you get it a little wrong :wack:

I currently have 235/45x17 on the front and 255/40x17 on the rear but would like to go a tad thinner maybe 225/45 or 215/50 and 245/40 or 235/45

How about a 225/45 all round? That's what Yokohama tend to do with a lot of BMWs :)

I did consider this but my wheels are staggered widths and being a 540 it struggles to put the power down in the dry with 255's.

Indeed, the thinking is in the winter you back off the loud pedal a bit anyway - winter tyres are much softer and speed rated way lower than summer tyres.

Hankook stock is as you can probably gather from above is a bit random, and Nankang are about 2000 225/45/17 short of what they initially ordered so it's a challenge to get them presently :wack:

Most other brands although we can get them, we dont deal direct so dont get blinding prices - places like kwik-fit bought up all of them and have been saving them until now so they can charge what they like :(

Even with no snow, they'll give you bettee grip in very low temps :nod:

I'll see what i can find tomorrow :-) JN is spot on though, once it's cold normal tyres dont get up to temperature so dont grip as they should.
