Not a happy man. Just got new big end shells fitted, car back together - no problems at all. Ten minutes later - the knocking is back, just not as bad. Must be the con-rod. Second-hand engine is probably the cheapest option - anyone got recommendations for a cheap place to get one in or around London? All this as the result of replacing a blown turbo - I will NOT be using that garage again... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/mad.gif

You could try Metro breakers in Colindale.

You could go down the route that I have, if you're mad.

I bought an old engine (with knackered bottom end) from someone on the board and have rebuilt that.
I'm almost at the end, so I can't say how successful I have been yet.
Chimp has done the same thing, he has about finished his too.

You could prolly get an old engine for about 100 quid, 200-250 for regrind/shells and gasket set, then assuming you have a pretty good tool collection, undestanding girlfriend, lots of time, patience, not scared of f'cking it all up, oh and another car to get you around for a few weeks while you do it, then I reckon you could do it for about 500 and keep your old engine as a spare.
Might be worth replacing pistonm rings, something I have to measure tonight.
Apparently piston rings are about £80 for the set.

I have rebuilt my old head, new oil seals, valve seals cleaned it etc.

But if you take your time and do the lot then you're effectively getting a pretty close to perfect engine. I hope.

You could then rebuild the one you take out ready for when the other blows up again. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

Alternatively try www.intapart.co.uk (http://www.intapart.co.uk) think they're about 500+vat for an engine out of a scrapper.

Jezz, no hope of doing it myself at the moment (no garage, no off-street parking, no time, no patience etc). Most annoying thing is that it's just had two new exhaust valves (£500) and a new turbo, and I've just wasted another £260 getting the shells done, all for nothing...

Mannie - tried Metro - no luck. I'll let your man Kos have another try...

That is a bitch http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif, and it's what I'm affraid of when I get mine all back together, my turbo is buggered too I think, will know as soon as it starts. I will get a T28 if it is. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Corsa's are the way forward, don't go fast enough to break. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Did you have the crank ground?

Haven't had the crank ground - engine wasn't taken out to do the shells. If I was to take the engine out, head off, new rod, regrind etc plus labour, I'm pretty sure it would be more expensive than a replacement lump.

You should have done your crank, risky not to I'm affraid. As if you need a tw@t like me telling you.

Bugger of a job though, £700 from ND I think for shells/regrind.

Jezz.

Jezz,

Yes, I know...

Now I need to find a replacement engine for less than £700...

if you wanna keep running around in yours and build another, you can have my old one minus a few little bits now for a hundred quid. might save time and money..

Chimp,

Cheers, but I need one asap, and it's still in bits in London.
