View Full Version : Saab FMIC installed today!!

Jez
04-08-2001, 15:01
Finally got my Saab FMIC installed today.

Its great - not sure how much power my engine is producing now but it pulls much harder at high revs. Boost used to drop from about 1 bar at 4000 rpm to about .5 bar at 6500 rpm. Now it only drops to about .8 - probably due to my std. T25 turbo.

If anyone wants pics I can mail them - took photos of all the steps involved.

Cheers for all the advise everyone gave me!

Thanks again
Jez

Just mailed you pics and a brief explaination.

It's worth it. Took me a while to sort everything out, and im still not 100% pleased with the job I did but I spose it'll keep me busy for a few more weekends.

I think I need a better fuel pump - the engine pinks a bit up near the red line - running a bit lean - might just retard the ignition a bit for now though or run super unleaded...

Nice one Jez.

A tank of Super unleaded should sort your pinking out.

With the boost turned up Super should really be used all the time.

Yeah you're right - I think I could be underfueling a bit too. Going to get the bosch fuel pump Steve Sadler recommended in a thread a while ago.

Email me the pics when you get the chance, were the stainless pipes the right length in the end?. I think the nuclear business can spare me an off cut or two!
I think I'll stick with std colour hoses though, I'm to old to wait as long as you did!
I'm hoping the bigeer FMIC will stop my pinking at 15 PSI and 12.5 BTDC it still pinks, any thoughts?

Jez

I reckon you need a new fuel pump like me - yours with 150k odd on it must be getting a bit worn...

Pics in the (virtual) post...

You could well be right. I wonder how easy it would be to measure the pressure?. I have changed the filter and that mad no difference, how about fitting and adjustable regulator. I'v got to refuel tomorow so may fill with super to see if that makes a difference, I've turned the boost down to 15 PSI and really don't want to retard the ignition further as it so good to drive at the moment.

Put a uprated fuel pump in about three weeks ago and the difference is brillant. It pull's a lot harder mid range and the off boost performance is now super smooth.

Go for it guys

Dave

PS I'm running at 20 degs BTDC with no probs

All I've heard it good news about uprated fuel pumps.

Has it increased your fuel consumption much? Which pump did you go for, Dave?

Im currently running 18 DBTDC with normal unleaded

Nice one mate http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif, its not hard is it. I went for an escort cossie pump, it cost £70 and fitted perfectly, and it also fuels perfectly.

Jez,
First thing is to get some Super unleaded in before you do some damage.Rant out of the way lets talk fuel pumps......
Go to 'Bosch Part No. for FUEL PUMPS' on page three of the Technical - S13 board for all the info you will ever need.
I got my pump from a local Bosch agent for £80 inc VAT
To fit it you will have to modify the pump hanger i.e. saw the bottom off of it and zip tie the new pump in position. Also you will need some elec crimp connecty things for the wires, and some little nuts to fix the elec crimpy things to the pump.
Carefull of the big rubber washer on top of the tank,it likes to expand and not seal when you put it all back together...I got one from Nissan for £8, It is the same as a late Sunny one
Don't be alarmed at the noise the pump makes on tick over it is normal say the Bosch man...grinding wizzing sucking ect

Took two hours start to finish

Anyway, right ,I had dinner during that two hours and my Mum says if you don't count that I could easy be,like ,one hour.....ish and that also includes a trip to Halfords for stuff and I saw a bloke I know down there and once I had cornered him and stopped him from running out of the shop I spoke to him...for a bit, anyway he said something about his house being on fire and to leave him alone and stop scaring his kids so I came home...so see.... it might not have been two hours

Bet cossie pumps aren't as LOUD as Bosch ones....ner ner and ner

Gotta make a decision Cossie or Bosch? Ford one sounds attractive and easy to get hold of and fit.
I'll deff replace the seal on the tank when I change it though.

Chaps,
I have a group A pump in mine and it makes a horrendous fecking noise. Sounds like a wasp nest in the boot ! Any way of quietening them down ? I presume its vibration being passed into the body so wrapping it in something soft might do it.....(toffee, puppy etc http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif)

With regards to the top mounts of the IC... well... um... I didn't fix it at all. It's held there by the hoses. The bottom is bolted to the chassis and rests on an old bicycle inner tube...

Still needs finishing off.

you should run the CA18DET on Super all the time, especially with high boost (14psi plus)

Yeah - I know I should.
I usually have the boost at about 0.9 bar, roughly 13 - 14 psi.
I always use super on trackdays.

The tee piece is for the air supply to the idling valve.

If you look on a std. S13 theres a small pipe coming off the top black plastic tube just before the hose to the throttle. The tee is for that pipe.

Any chance you can email me those pics too, with a brief explanation of what to do?

If I can get the bits at a reasonable price and the work I can do myself, I can prolly do the whol job without too much of an ear bashing from the missus http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif
