Just picked up my car from the mechanic and its still knocking!! Parts fitted: New shells mains and journals, Shaft reground 10 thou. New oil pump, new clutch, new belts and usual parts. The mecahnic said he spent alot of time cleaning the internals of grindings (didnt want an engine flush). The only thing that i can think is that the conrod is outta shape or the small end is away? When the engine was split it was obvious that the problem was one of the big ends. (The engine was starved of oil on a big roundabout. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif) The damaged shell was flattened about 5mm on each side the rest of the shells seemed to be fine. Does any one have a conrod or know where i would get one? (nissan new £95)

P.S. The knock starts at the same rmp as before and behaves the same the only difference is that it sounds alot faster???

I've got a funny feeling I'm going to be in exactly the same situation... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

I'm keeping my fingers crossed....I went for a new con rod to be on the safe side...as well as oil pump, timing belt etc etc. 'Supposed' to get my car back on tuesday.

Was your mechanic competent...mine has spent a lot of time making sure everything shipshape....no expense spared kind of thing. And if it still knocks I'm gonna kill myself!

I assume a con-rod is an engine-out, head off job? If that's the case, my thinking is that a second-hand engine may be a cheaper option for me. Annoying as the head was off to replace two exhaust valves a couple of months ago... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/mad.gif

Don't think you have to take the head off but it is an engine out job to replace a con rod.

Although loads of guys have done their own crank extraction/ big end business...did everyone have instant success?

The head has to come out or so ive been told. The pistion wont come out the bottom or will it?? has anyone had problems with small ends? or is the problem a shagged conrod?

Gonna take the spark plug outta the guilty cylinder tonight and see if if quiets it down a bit! tryin not to drive her much but its not easy when ure driven around in a 91 FESTIA 1.1 LX.

No it wont come out the bottom, unless it's REALLY shagged, erm square.

Trust me my engine is in bits all over the patio/house/garage.

Surely the piston has to come out the bottom coz its connected to the crankshaft by said con rod. Or have I been laying in the sun too long?

I was driving the car last night and the knocking dosent seem as bad?? (still feared to put my foot down!)Am I taking a big risk (ie.will it wreck my new shaft) or am i safe as long as i dont fleece her?? Has anyone any suggestions what the knocking would be and the best way of fixing it?

Reason im driving it is my mechanic is on holiday till next friday......what do I have to do to get this thang on the road???

Colin,

Could you still send it to me anyway if it's not too much of a problem?

The reason being that it's a good reference point for the other bits should I need any.

Cheers,

Jezz.

layin in sun too long ..the head comes off
then unbolt conrod ..two bolts.. take out shell bearings and push piston and rod out of piston bore...you cannot take out thru bottom as for a start the piston oil cooler jet is in the way
