View Full Version : Coil packs

While checking my spark plugs, I noticed that one carbon contact inside the coil pack fell out and another was missing.

The car was running fine before with only the spring making contact.

Does anyone know if I can just buy these contacts, or if I can make my own.

Also, what length should they be?

Sounds like a Nissan only job, they would probably only what a couple of hundred pounds for 4 small pieces of carbon http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Nooooooooo...

Don't tell me that, can anyone tell me how long they are new?

Kristian

My carbo bits did the same thing and the cars been running fine since. about 20000miles ago!!! I enquired at Nissan but they only supply full coil assemblies and not the carbon bits. seems a bit silly really. Try Norris designs or Hiteq or a scrapyard for coils with carbon contacts??

Have you been running your car without the contacts?

Kristian

Yes for at least 20,000 miles and its still absolutely fine.

Undo the 4 8mm bolts on each and pull each one out.

Remove the spark plug cover, unclip the connectors on the coil packs, remove the 4 screws holding each one in, then pull em out.

Or at least thats how I done it :wack:

Can I be pedantic too? :D

They are 6mm screws not 8mm. They have a 10mm hexagon on the top, 8mm screws would have a 13mm hexagon

Pedant corrects pedant - you can have bolts which are fully threaded, there is a certain length (according to the British standard) at which a screw becomes a bolt. It's 2xthe diameter+a certain figure which is different for each size  :p

LOL Nissan use a non standard head size then, an M5 screw should have an 8mm hex

Just goes to show that pedantry can be a dangerous hobby

Yeah the cover has 10mm ones, the coil packs are 8mm

non-mechical person with non-technical answer :p

Screw = use screwdriver
Bolt = use spanner/socket

Doesn't help with coil packs 'cause you can use either (except on half of mine where I've made big, smooth sided dips in the centres of mine) :D

You'll possibly find that without carbon contacts the coil pack won't actually touch the spark plug. Find a short bolt (M3 or M4 diameter I think?)which will screw into the spring on the coil pack and use that as a contact.

The springs also pull out with a bit of force, should you want to replace them with longer ones (and do away with contacts).

Do not waste money on new coil packs.

I've recently had to replace the spring in one of my coil packs as it had disintergrated

found the spring from an in-line fuse holder to be a perfect fit

Yes it does work, I know because the same thing happened to me and I fixed it in the same way. :)

I used the springs from a pack of crappy ball point pens, and the led from fat artist pencils (hard pencil, not soft)

Carbon bits?

I have taken my coil packs out, and cleaned the contact surfaces etc. Please correct me If I am wrong, but my packs only have the little srings in them. Is there supposed to be something attached to the end of the spring or sommat?

A piccy of a coil that is how it should be would be appreciated if any1 can provide 1?

Many thanks

Mike

hope this helps... the red bit I drew on myself is there to show you where the spring is...

It all makes ense now!!

Is the contact connected to the end of the spring, and is this the part that makes contact with the spark plug top tip?

If so - i have probably been trying to sort out my timing and everything else with very dodgy coil packs that have no contacts installed!!! Ooops.

Cheers for the image tho.

Thanks Theory!

Cheers

no problemo, glad it helped - and yeah, its coil --> spring --> carbon --> spark plug ;)

Thought something was wrong when I took them apart.

Thanks again. Going out now to fit some screws!

Nissan now supply longer springs which apparently do away with the carbon bit and just use the spring. I bought some but havent fitted them yet. Let us know if you need a part number.

Wow! That's excellent news... when I showed my carbon-less coils to Nissan they insisted I bought new coils at about £70 a pop! The dirty sods... (edit: just thought I'd add that I didn't buy them!)

Where did you find this out? and how much are they?

Whhaaahheeeeyyy!!!!

Car nows runs soooooo much smoother!!

Wow. What a difference a little 4mm ****er sunk wood screw makes to each coil pack!

Doesn't hesitate at idle or hesitate when boosting!

Glad to hear you're all sorted now. I had a similar "disappearing carbon" story with mine...

I picked up used coil packs from a 30,000 mile jap engine for £10 apiece inclusive of VAT, from a company advertising in Exchange and Mart. Nissan-, or Nippon-Spares, I think they were called.

Sorry I didn't spot your thread sooner, but my computer has been down for ages!
