Considering that my car is running 13.5 psi at the standard set timing, would it be a problem if I increased it to 15psi? I have the ND Stage 1 Chip.

Any help mucho appreciated. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Dave,

I wouldnt have thought that 1.5 psi will make that much difference. Do you know what the current setting is for the timing? I remember when I went to ND to get my chip, actuator and get it set up he set the timing to 14 BTDC if running 95 octane UL, and 13 BTDC if running 97 octane SUL.

Cant remember what std timing should be (been that long since it was Std http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif ). Give it a try and see if she pinks, if it does then alter the timing a little or you could turn the boost back down http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif (but wheres the fun in that http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif )

Well, the timing *should* be standard, its never been changed.

Thing is I'll have to get a garage to do it, I have no idea how to do it myself. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

If you can find someone who can lend you a strobe timing light, it can be done - dead easy, in about 30 mins

The standard timing is 15 B.T.D.C 4 your info. !!!

I wouldn't have the foggiest of how to use the thing! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/confused.gif

Is there really that much difference between 14 and 15 btdc anyway???? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/confused.gif

If anything, when increasing the boost, 15 should be better than 14, though there really shouldnt be that much difference.

The strobe is honestly really easy to use, even a simpleton like me can use it http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/rolleyes.gif

So is a new chip needed to increase the boost? What does it do? I was hoping just to bang in a new actuator...

Really the chip is best to have as well, then you have the correct fuel mapping for the increased boost.

I may have ago at upping the boosticals this Saturday then! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Ahh so THAT's what that flashing light thing is all about!

And the normal should be 15 ..
Hmm, Matt_J's came out at 1 (!) when at Norris the other week, a little bit of a surprise, especially the way Norris worded it!

I wonder what my timing's at .. How important is timing? When the car is standard and tuned.

I never though timing and plug where important until I started modding the car, but the combination of incorrect timing and wrong temp plugs can cause pre-ignition and pinking http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/eek.gif

Heres a little insight .....

Timing is as it sounds the correct time for the ignition to send a voltage to the particular spark plug for firing, if it is advanced it will fire a bit sooner and retarded a bit later. Ours I believe should be 15degrees B.T.D.C., in an ideal world 0degress would be the optimum as the piston is at its highest and therefore most compressed state, but in the real world we have to allow for cumbustion lag so the spark plug is fired slightly earlier to allow for the controlled burn to travel across the cumbustion chamber !

To use a strobe light on ours, just get a piece of H.T. lead and strip the end, remove the coil pack from the spark plug and attach the lead to it and then poke the other end up the coil pack that you just removed ! Then you can attach a timing light to this lead and voila !!!

I do believe 14 would be better than 15 as its slightly retarded and if your'e running high boost any advance in timing would cause detonation !!!

I'm running 1.1 bar boost with an HKS fuel cut defencer and HKS air fuel regulator. I dont get any pinking and I havent touched the ignition. At least I cant hear any pinking and all pistons are still intact!!!

I too am running 1.1 bar with the HKS F.C.D. and don't get any pinking but did raise to 1.2 bar and received quite a lot of detonation so turned back down, to be safe !!!
