My car has a severe overheating problem, its also loosing water but I don't know where from, I have flushed the coolant system and tried a chemical called seal-up but still the problem is there.

I'm going to run a compression test in a minute, but could a knakered head gasket cause just overheating, oil and water are not mixing at all and i'm sick of driving about in all this sunshine and having to have the heater on full blast.

Please some one help before I torch my car ! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/mad.gif

I am really f*cked off with my car at the moment http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/mad.gif

Paul,

have you tried leaving the car standing for a day or so to try and see where abouts in the engine the leak is coming from.

whats your water/coolant ratio as well?

Check your waterpump perhaps?

P.S. Thought that you didn't have internet at work.

I had the head gasket go not that long ago. The symtoms for me where:

1) No heat from heater
2) Vapour from Exhaust when running
3) Water loss
4) When running at normal temp if I removed the radiator cap bubbles came out.

There was no oil in water or water in oil, but the reason for this could be seen when the gasket was off. It had gone between one of the cylinders and a water channel, meaning the coolant was going in to the cylinder. It was OK when driven carefully, ie the heater worked and no water was lossed, however (this is what the bloke who fixed it said) when your running higher boosts it can lift the head very slightly, so everytime I put my foot down the problem re-occured.

Is the Radiator in good condition? Are all the fins between the water veins OK?

I'm off work today to sort out my effing car, but anyway I've just done a compression test and every cylinder was exactly the same. The water pump has only done 5000 miles and the antifreeze mix is 60% water/40% AF

I've replaced Head Gaskets in the past and I've found that if the water was low or overheated the radiator could be cracked, water pump split or the thermostat faulty.

Hope this helps?

I checked the water pump and its O.K. the radiator has no signs of a crack/leak and I replaced the thermostat 2 days ago http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/confused.gif

Does sound a bit like the thermostat isn't opening, although that doesn't really account for the loss of water.

My 520i went though a spate of overheating so I replaced most of the cooling system, Viscous coupling, Thermostat and water pump. It was however just the thermostat being stuck shut that was the problem.

It's a bugger how 8 quids worth of metal can wreck your engine.

It's probably worth replacing it anyway, I don't think it can be too much of an arse to do looking at where it is.

You tried running it without the thermostat in?

Are your feed AND return pipes from the rad getting hot?

How much water are you loosing.

I know you said the thremostat was new, but it might be worth checking, it only takes a few mins to remove, dunk in some boiling water to check it opens and refit. At least its another thing to eliminate.

I'm loosing quite a bit, I drove about 15 miles and I had to top it up with 1/2 a litre. I may run the car without the thermostat to get to Billing, but now I think it could be the head gasket.......time to get a HKS low compression jobbie http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

And the new stat works fine.

Water pipes that fed the heater matrix ?? These wnt on my mates s31 and on Jezz's ?? There's quite a few behind the block that only leak when the cars running and the system is pressurised, and are akward ones to get to.
