Hi all, I'm taking my car for a dyno run next Saturday but I won't have sorted the viscous coupling problem I'm having with the fan quite by then, so I'm wondering how easy it would be to have the fan disconnected for a run on the dyno? I assume the dyno place should have some fans they place in front of the car which would cool it ok while it has a run? I'd really like to know how much power is being lost to this dead coupling.

Cheat http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif At santa pod last week I think someone said (either matt or steve) that you can get around 10bhp with the fan out of the scene. Im thinking of getting some electric ones fitted myself if that is the case. And yes they do use a ruddy great big fan when your on the rollers, sounds like a 747. be prepared to fight back the tears as your pride and joy sits there at 7000rpm while you stand helplessley by. I didnt know how noisey it was until I had mine done. good luck http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Haha, well if the fan loses 10bhp on its own when it's working properly, I hate to think how much the engine is being restricted by this one in its current state. The engine does not like going above 5000rpm at all, and if for some reason it gets up to 6000, the pleasing sound of the fan belt joins in the cacophony of noise. I'm also not going to have the dyno test go over 6000 with the fan on just in case something does fly out of the bonnet. Now seems like a good time to check the RAC will still tow me home if it dies.

I would sugest getting the electric fan fitted before you put the car on the rollers. There's not much point only running the car up to 6000 when it makes peak boost at about 6500, just means you'll have to get it done again with the new fans (anyway, you could probably do the leccy fan conversion for the cost of a RR session)...

just my £0.02....

Who do you recommend for the electric fan conversion? I wonder if Hi-Teq could do it, they aren't based too far away from me.

Do it yourself....

Seriously, as long as you are reasonably mechanically competent then it's not all that difficult a job.

You can get the parts from a scrapper, or SE do an electric fan kit.

WARNING! do not disconnect ur fan, it is the only sx alive to give off the effect that it has V8 under the bonnet, it is pure comedy to hear u coming and the intermittent fan belt noises are enough to scare even the most hardened driver and force him off the road. You may not have performance, but dam u have attitude (but mostly comedy) keep the V8, till it blows up, obviously....

Hi Andy. Probably will be doing myself out of some cash http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif but is pretty easy to convert to electric fans.
I did a conversion on a friends 200 using air con twin fans from a Renault 25.
A bit of bracketry(?) has to be made up to fit it to the radiator (I used that perforated strip stuff you get with car stereos).
Get yourself a thermostat from a scrappy (VW are good coz they have the best range of temperatures)
Cut the top water pipe and get a bit of steel pipe that will fit inside it, about 4" long and have a hole drilled into it and a nut (that the thermostat will screw into) braized/ welded to it.
Now run a wire from the battery (+) to the themostat and onto a relay (pin 86) and then back to (pin 85) the battery(-). Run another wire straight to the relay (pin 30) from the battery (+) and another wire from the relay (pin 87) to the fan. And now more wire from the fan to an earth point. Also (nearly forgot) fuse the live wires from the battery (30A). Make sure the fan is wired up th right way round, you dont want it blowing when it should be sucking (women take note http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif).
That about it, I'm fairly sure the wirings right, have fun!

It was quite a unique noise ...

I wonder.. how about a squeaky V8 TurboDiesel?? Broken fan coupling + a complete lack of manifold gaskets coupled with the most ear-piercing fan belt slippage ever? Must be an award for a car that sounds like that.

The fan is easy enough to take off to answer ur original question.
It requires 2 spanners (8mm or 10mm cant remember) and something to put over the cowl while ur doing it or ur arms will get scratched to feck.
Recommend dousing all the bolts in wd40 b4 cos they were pretty bloody tight. 4 in total.
