Well it seems it wasn't me turbo that had gone after all(bloody glad as that t28 was only 1000 miles old). Mr. norris had a little look into the oil connector pipes on the cam covers and they were caked in oily crap, basically bunged up and causing massive plumes of smoke at idle due to insufficient breathing....
If any of u guys get this smoking after driving and then coming to idle then just check your cam covers and clean it with some brake cleaner to save u going out and buying a new turbo!!

Cheers Matt,
Have to tell Taff - his smokes on idle a bit lately.

I've totally scraped my standard breather system and routed it to a catch tank instead, surprising how it has helped with on boost smoke.

Where abouts are these pipes? Cos mine does EXACTLY this and I would like to check it out? Do you have to take the cover off or something? What do the pipes look like?

They join the 2 cam covers together, tee off to the back of the inlet manifold(where the pcv valve is)and theres also 1 from the exhaust cam cover to just after the air filter.

I did this the other week and found the left hand side cover to be totaly cacked up with sludgy stuff.
Just take em both off, dismatle all the baffles and clean thoroughly.
Didn't make any difference to the way my car ran though it couldn't have hurt.

What sort of mileage have the cars got that are so badly caked up.

Mines done 72,000. Would it still be worth giving it a go at cleaning the breather pipes?

I was going to clean my AAC valve at the weekend even though I had not had any problems, but Steve Sadler convinced me that "if it ain't broke - don't try and fix it!" Good advice I thought so I didn't bother.

Did my 85k engine a few weeks ago - cleaned the cam covers and pipes.

Sh!t loads of crap in the cam covers and pipes - too a couple of hours to sort it all out.

Worth it though I think.

I've heard Norris saying its a good idea to use a catch tank and or those little K&N breather filters.

Warning people, i bought my 200sx absolutely mint from a grandad 4 months ago and it only had 43500 miles on the clock, ive only put on another 3000 miles, and the build up has appeared due to insufficient running and 'thrashing' on the grandads part. A simple way to check any build up is to remove those black oil pipes from over the rocker cover, and then shove a screwdriver head into the cam cover oil inlets, above the baffles(the raised bits on the cam covers). Mine spewed out the equivalent of fudge it was so darned thick. I will be cleaning them out this week by taking off the cam covers and cleaning inside the baffles, i will make some photos up and post them on the board so's everyone can see....should be fun http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yeah, I had tons of crap in the tubes, and in the covers.

I took the covers off, took the baffles apart which stop oil going into the tubes and then pressure washed all of the crap off.

Let it all dry proberly then rebuilt it.

Made absolutely no difference to the smokey idle of my engine though. But it made me feel better for doing it.

Do you have to replace the cam cover gaskets (I presume there are some!)

Mannie, No there's nothing to preplace, they are big thick rubbery things. Which is lucky really.

still no change with the smoking and i lost 2.5 litres of oil at on the billing weekend, checked with norris who said to check the spark plugs for oil in case of a knackered piston, did and they were fine, car is booked in for a compression test and a vacuum test apparently on wednesday afternoon, will find the problem there so i hope it ain't expensive....

GAH!! so unhappy....
turns out after a few diagnostic checks, my engine is completely tip-top...and so it should be with only 47000 miles on the clock.
Only thing they could come up with was it might be the drain-plug or summit on the turbo being faulty as well as the O-ring.
To check the breather pipes, he blocked off the one leading from the rocker cover into the air-inlet hose, i thought it was working until joy of joy....smoke pours out at idle outside andyf's house... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif
i feel great, i really do....

And even though you're only running 9psi of boost, it's 8 more than my car currently runs with :\ Clutch is so bad now that it was slipping when the boost gauge was reading as low as 0.3 bar in some cases..
