View Full Version : Brown crap as my coolant

If the water coolant seems to be full of just brown sludge, just after having new engine put in, what would that be?
I didnt think to check the coolant level as soon as picked my car up from ND, so today when I was looking in preparation for a motorwy journey, I saw that there was no actual water was just above "min" mark but looked like brown stuff rather than bluey.
I topped it up with water and antifreeze and about minute after smoke puffed out my exhaust. Is it likely that ND forgot to put coolant in, or did my car burn up all the water within a day? surely if all the water burnt, then my car would have overheated drastically, smoke would be pouring out constantly and nasty smells would be everywhere(???) I've toppped it up now and smoke is still puffing out, but ND told me that smoke would be coming out for bout week anyway due to residual oil in my exhaust. Any ideas before would be appreciated b4 about 5:30 today. As I'm leaving then for a week.

Cheers people

Ed

Some people (ND may be one of them) recommend using Radweld or similar permanently as a preventative measure. This would resemble brown crap especially around the pressure cap.

If this is not the case I think there's trouble a brewin'

It could have been rust that had built up during the import of the engine, now the engine is being used it has mixed in with the antifreeze. Just run a coolant flush through the system and refill with a 40/60 antifreeze/water mix.

Hey the brown radiator fluid may indicate rust in the radiator.

dont think theres much to worry about, its just rusty particles from the block/radiator - wherever.

Oops again. Maybe a touch melodramatic.
If your engine was in a bad way (and a new engine suggests it was) any rust or sludge in old radiator, reused hoses etc will now be washed around.
I know most antifreezes are blue or green. Are there any that are brown ?

ND strikes again! Fits an engine at ££££££££ and does'nt check everything! Give me strength.

I agree with Paul. When you drain an engine, you'll never get all the water out so when its been transported from Japan, the water deposit will produce a little rust.

Just flush out the system a couple of times with just water then fill with water/anti-freeze.

You'll never get all the water out???? Their web site says there checked internally! I'd complain, complain, complain.

Sounds like radweld to me. i put somer in mine as i had a leak from the pipe just below the intake manifold. have fixed it now as it got worse but the rad weld still persists after drainage and also renewing turbo and later on turbo gaskets (coolant is lost when you do this job). so several refills later (no complete flush) and i still have brown coolant. seems radweld is quite hard to get rid of once in. i havent tried hard to get rid as it seems to cause no problems in cooling etc. if you drain it make sure you get rid of airlocks as i always seemed to get them unles i warmed the car up whilst filling and got the water circulating.

radweld is for posh types. Crack an egg in there http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

gives your engine that "full english" smell. sorts leaky radiators out though... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaa! mind me spurs

*note, i have never done this to a car i own.
