Having just had my gearbox reconditioned for £499, I just had the joy to hear the wonderous sound of my big end knocking !!!! this noise was drowned out previously by the shagged gear box !!!!n anyone got a shotgun I can borrow ?? so now i have to consider the expensive job of looking at the big end. QUESTION ? can the sump be taken of without removing the engine as this has obvious connections to the price of the job. also at the moment the noise is only a quite rattle like something is loose, the mechanic i use said it may only require new shells as opposed to more expensive work can anyone comment on their past experience ???

Apparently its quite a simple job if your crank shaft is not too badly worn. The sump can be removed without taking out the engine, and the crank can be split from the big ends and con-rods without removing the pistons.

Options Motorsport do this regularly and they call it a bottom end service. They charge quite a bit for it as they are Jap specialists. However any decent mechanic should be able to do without too much hassle.

I even thought about doing it myself some time when/if I get access to a car lift.

Welcome to the club of dead big ends! I think practically all of us have had this problem. For details on getting the sump off have a look at my 'how to' on fitting guages in the tuning section. I had to do this to fit an oil temp guage. Or SE do a fixed price job at £300.

When I took my car to a local garage the other day for him to see what state my old engine was in, he said to me that if I wanted my big end bearings done then it would be about 4 hours work - bout £200 - and the price of the actual shells, which he said wouldnt be that much. But seeing as my engine was already knackered I thought I'd just go for a new one.

My mechanic will do it for anyone for £150 plus parts.

He has done loads of work on 200sx's before (including regular turbo chages).

He's based in Palmers Green North London which won't obviously suit everyone.

My big ends haven't gone yet but for that price I might get them done now rather than later before they go bad.

Mannie,

Do you have a number and address for your mechanic in Palmers Green?

Thanks

PH,
His name is Kos from KK Motors.

His number is 020 8882 5990 and he is based behind the Safeway opposite Palmers Green Station.

Do you know it? Where do you live?

Mannie,

Thanks for that - I'm south of the river, but if he knows his stuff, I can get to Palmers Green...
