View Full Version : front mount IC

Hi all!

I know this is one of the topics covered in the past, but I couldn't find the infos I want...

I plan to install a new IC, preferably front mount.
But I don't want to do the job like Norrisdesign to remove the fan cover and place the IC there.

I'd prefer to install the IC really IN FRONT and preserve the fan cover for cooling efficiency.
Has anybody of you done this? How did you get the pipes and hoses to (which is easier) and from (and that's the hard part) the IC back to the engine?
I don't really want to fit a smaller battery and cut a hole where the larger battery was... I don't like the thought of weakening the body of my car (and I don't like cutting around at all)

If somebody has done this or knows of infos how to do this or anything .. please help

Thanks

Christian

If you can find an IC with the inlet and outlet on the same sides then you can mount it in front of the rad and use the original routing for the hoses (might make it a little bit more laggy eith the longer pipes, but if you don't want to move or cut anything....)

Hi Ben!

yeah, i know.
there even is a kit available from apexi i think
but i don't think this is the right way to do it..
too long lines and losses in it.
also I'd like to use the existing holes down to the original IC for 1, a pipe to the new IC and 2, for a CAI

Then I'd like to use the existing air feed for the original IC to build a tunnel facing towards the brakes (same on the other side)

that would be my idea to do it.
But I'm still curious of how to get the damn piping done properly

some cutting i could get used to, but not much http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Christian, welcome to the site!
I've read your mail today and will send you one back in a couple of days when I've done a bit more work on the matter.

Have you seen the HKS FMIC for the S13? Check Stevecarter100's car on Dans site - www.puresx.co.uk. (http://www.puresx.co.uk.) This is what me and steve have got. I've got the later model, the same as yourself and the HKS logo is sprayed in the middle (not offset like steves to accomodate the centre strut of the bumper skin).
I've just had a 60mm pipe made up from the turbo to the IC pipe which passes down into the wing (the HKS kit utilises the OE piping from the turbo to where it usualy passes down into the OE IC)

Speak soon,

Matt

There used to be an excellent s13 mod site with write ups, photos and sources.
Martin "sneezy'", aussie guy
Try installation links on: http://www.nissansilvia.com/
Info was too good to throw away.

Intercooler exit pipe can easily run under radiator support, in between triangle space, at tension rod bracket, then up to TB.
Make sense ?

Has anyone fitted the ND wing mounted IC replacement?

Just wondered?

HaHa

I know sneezy, and his Homepage. Nice helpful guy.
Guess where I got my new SW from, when i fu**ed my PROM during desoldering http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Unfortunately he's 1, very busy all the time and 2, he's got no pics of the installation of the IC on his homepage.

I've also thought about routing the pipes there. Seems to be the only possibility to do it without cutting. Leaves the ground clearance rather low....

I'll have a look at this again, thanks

Yeah, sneezy's cool..... and busy.
Haven't looked at the link Brucemc posted, but the info from Martin's old site is just where I said... check it.

BeanS14,
If someone is tryin' to sell me on an improved wing mount intercooler, they'd better have some numbers to back it up..... I mean, there's not much airflow there to begin with.
The 2.0 mitsubishi turbo eclipse oe unit is much bigger than the stock ca18det unit, and almost twice as thick! Probably a good upgrade for an s14 also.... they're throwing away these things in the US.
I'd go front mount one time.

The link goes to sneezy's old site.. he seems to have changed the provider.
Not much airflow??? You mean through the IC?
Um, I don't think so... I mean they built a nice tunnel directing the air coming from the front through the IC...
Something like an IC-RAM air http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

But I'd also prefer front mount. There simply isn't enough space for a decent cooler in the wing.
And if it is front mount the fan of the engine would also suck air through the IC - which definitely wouldn't be bad

I read the Evo 6 IC is a good unit...
Somebody got PICs of an install or some kind of scheme how it looks like?
Where are the pipes facing?

Questions over questions *g*

I agree that a Front Mounted IC would be much better. I only wondered if anyone had fitted the ND Wing Mounted IC which is meant to have a larger core but the same physical dimensions of the standard IC.

I'm not thinking of getting one, just curious?
