Hey guys.

I'm going to post up a history of my 180sx so far, and keep this thread updated with what i'm doing to my car :)

I picked it up late december 2007 and i've been loving it ever since :)

So let's kick off with it in Japan, this is a shot in the Japanese auction car park.

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/just-got-my-car/180sx.jpg

This was the night I brought it home, all the way down from Dundee :nod:

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/just-got-my-car/photo-0093.jpg

This is at Hybrid Paintworks in Ware to get it up on the ramps and see if everything is in order underneath.

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0097.jpg" width="640" height="480">

And now time for my first mod! URAS GT wing.

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0108.jpg" width="640" height="480">
<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0110.jpg" width="640" height="480">
<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0111.jpg" width="640" height="480">

I ran the car like this for months and I was very happy until in a freak 'leaving-the-bonnet-catch-open-while-testing-driving-new-fuel-pump-at-high-speed' incident. This smashed the fancy bonnet up and dented my roof real bad.

Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of this as I was too pissed with how stupid I had been to leave the bonnet on the latch.

Anyway I somehow reasoned that it would be cheaper to get all the bodywork done on the car that I wanted to do and so started the new build!

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0050.jpg" width="480" height="640">

We stripped down all the juicy body parts on the car and sold them on to fund the new parts.

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0052.jpg" width="480" height="640">

Wheels are getting ready to be sent off to their new home on the continent.

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0207.jpg" width="640" height="480">

My 180 is tucked away waiting for the new parts to arrive and looking very sad :(

Off to the bodyshop for fitting and paint.

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0211.jpg" width="640" height="480" />

Some bodyshop progress..

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0067_1.jpg" width="640" height="480" />

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/photo-0141_1.jpg" width="640" height="480" />

Months pass and this comes out..

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/of8.jpg" width="640" height="480" />

<img src="http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/my-bodyshop-winter-build/of6.jpg" width="640" height="480" />

Finally I get it back and it looks like this..

I've added a load of small tweaks like installing a bride seat, replaced the apexi with a nur spec, added Z32, loads of silicon hosing, a nistune ecu (still being fitted as my wiring is being troublesome..) and some stickers.

Here are a couple of pics from convoy.

'ok.. that car is a big gay car :rolleyes:' This I can live with - it's my car :D And you need to get a sense of humour ;)

'a little more down wing and its perfect' <-- this would take a good chunk of the aggression from the look of the car.

Sorry that I have to ask again: Which overfenders did you use?

tokyo_black
21-10-2008, 09:57
Ah sorry mate I missed that question, the overfenders are from EP racing and they are Origin copies. They definately weren't "perfect fit" but for the price I couldn't complain.

They are 4 to 5 stud conversion ones. We did look at taking them off, but at the time didn't have a tool that was thin enough to fit the space and around the nut.

Hey guys.

I did a bit of house keeping on my 180sx this weekend. I junked the carbon canister and sheadloads of hosing and relocated my catch tank to where the carbon canister was.

Stock carbon canister.
http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/general-site/carboncan1.jpg

Old boost vacuum pipe, carbon can pipes and grounding kit.
http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/general-site/carboncan2.jpg

Cusco catch tank removed.

New catch tank home :)

What we removed from the car.
http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/general-site/carboncan7.jpg

This was my old engine bay..
http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/general-site/carboncan8.jpg

And this is it now!
http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/general-site/carboncan6.jpg

It looks great and we even managed to shorten the boost vacuum pipe considerably. :D I'm dead chuffed with the result and now I feel like I want to start junking everything from the engine bay!

As Morf says they are bolt on and the front bumper is vertex :)

nice one, is there good ground clearance with it yeh? it looks like there is anyway, ive a uras front on mine, looks identical only swoops down and out more, its not really suited to irish roads, had to raise the height, but would like to change bumper an drop it again, was tinking of going for the vertex..sorry for the long winded story there, ha :D

jod
02-11-2008, 23:26
have you got your catch can open to atmospheric pressure or is it recirculating back into your inlet?

looks a dam site neater joe!
nice one

carbon canister removal is on my "to do list"

tokyo_black
03-11-2008, 08:14
Gander: Yep I need to sort that out :o :whip:

luda: It sounds like vertex might be up your street then, it is aggressive but certainly not a ground scraper :)

jod: Yep the catch tank vents to atmos now. If you are thinking of ditching the carbon can i'd say go for it, it didn't take long at all and got rid of loads of redundant hoses :)

Carta
03-11-2008, 09:47
Mate, whats the benefit of removing the caborn canister, apart from the clean engine bay. Can you take a picture of where your front bumper attaches, as I think mine is a copy and a awful fit.

tokyo_black
04-11-2008, 08:20
I'm not sure removing the carbon canister has any benefit on the car other then cleaning up the engine bay and that's why I did it :) I'd like to say it was for a performance gain but that would just be a lie :o

I will take some close up pics of my kit, but everything is bonded in place so the fit is good. I can still take pics if you like but i'm not sure how useful that would be?

I'm going to be looking around the £300 mark for the JIC's - this is going to be dependant on the condition once they are off the car. They are *hard core* track suspension and are totally flat, it's going to be interesting getting some more 'socialable' apex's on there to be honest :)

I am going to be doing some body mods over christmas and the nuts BGW might well be going into retirement :eek:

leave it on joe, your s body is one of only a few uk 200's that the BGW actually really suits the car:nod: thats my opinion mate:thumbs:

Don't take the BGW off!!! Your car will catch :ghey: !

Why the hell did I decide to run mismatched wheels that day!? haha

Joe's car definitely has the best BGW execution I've seen. Saying that the new wing looks cool too. It definitely has a cleaner look, so combined with the SSRs it should look awesome!

Here are a couple of pics of the new spoiler that 's just been fitted. I will give it a clean soon and take some proper photos..

S15 wings look the tits on 180's, kinda like a kouki wing on steroids.

and I'll do a straight swap for your JICs with my apex coils??????:D

tokyo_black
23-01-2009, 10:18
I'm afraid so :eek:

My JIC's will be up for sale after next weekend when i'm replacing them with some apex gen 2's.

I tried some different setups and I found the gen 2's were perfect for me :nod:

It's a shame to lose the fancy JIC magic brand name (their stickers are so cool :wack:) but my Rotas are about to be replaced by something special so I figure that evens it up somewhat :D

D1 RWD
23-01-2009, 10:44
id either put the BGW back on or leave it flush imho joe, failing that get some fibreglass work done on the spoiler to bring down the outer sides/edge of the spoiler to match the line of the car a bit better. (over the rear quater)

or cut the peices of the spoiler that bolt to the lid lower down and at the same angle as side peices are so it would appear more factory, and would make it hang over the back of the car more... does that make sense ??

failing that my vote gets the BGW tho mate :nod:

Unfortunately the fronts don't quite clear the calipers even with a 5mm spacer and a bit of minor filing, so spacer are on order to a) make sure they fit, and b) maintain decent fitment.

Just got in and thought i'd do a quick note to self:

- When setting off to see your brother who lives in SE London, do not follow tomtom's advice blindly and drive for 4 hours through the city center in mental traffic with a car that has a locking diff and jic magic coilovers. *nightmare*

On the plus side my new 255 section rears have fit in perfectly, no scrubbing what so ever. Interestinly I think they actually fit better then the 225's on the gtrs used to.

I think i'll try them around 15/32 clicks towards hard to try to strike the right balance.

Hopefully next weekend we will be able to adjust the ride height and do some proper testing.

Good luck relocating it all. I work with electrical wiring everyday at work. Just take it easy and make sure you label every thing!!! (you probably already know all this lol)

I'm going to have to be a black sheep here, I can't hold it in any longer, you've got to put the BGW back on, I think it worked so, so much better than the s15 number, really made the car for me.
Don't get me wrong, your car is awesome but there is something about that s15 spoiler, it kind of detracts from the uniqueness of the car, makes it look a little more run-of-the-mill than it should.

Phew, glad I've got that off my chest! :)

Thanks for the comments guys :)

The wing looks like it'll be gone on Sunday, a guy is coming to pick it up :(

I haven't got a decent picture of the new wheels and spoiler setup but once my new ssr's arrive for the rear then we'll get some decent photos and you'll see the glory of the new wheels/spoiler :)

I think ultimately I will get the centers refurbished in a shiny chrome to match the dish, it should look awesome.

My BGW is gone :eek: a nice chap took it away to stick on his kitted S14, I can't wait to see pics i'm sure it will look great :nod:

I'm going to copy the latest post on my car from 180sx.co.uk, a post written by Morf:

http://www.180sx.co.uk/blogs/owners-blogs/joes-180/how-low-can-you-go/

How low can you go..

"…before your car eats it self, well Joe found out. The other week while changing the coilovers we decided to check his wiring loom. As on S13’s these are run under the wheel arch, and if you are running a low car, right in the tyres path…

He had been having a few electrical gremlins so it was a logical place to look, well this is what we saw…

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180sx-wiring-1.jpg

While it is hard to tell from that picture there are at least 4-5 wires fully cut, so that was a good place to start with for any problems!!

Today we set aside some time to fix this, the idea was to fix the wires and relocate the loom higher up in the arch.

However the first problem to greet us was the fact that the sideskirts and front bumper had been bonded on by the bodyshop when the kit was fitted to his car. The front bumper was no problem, we cut through the bonding, but the sideskirt proved to be more difficult. It required heat/hacksaw blade and a fair bit of time…

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180sx-wiring-2.jpg

Once we finally got the sideskirt off, and the wing removed from the body it was time to see the extent off the damage:

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180sx-wiring-3.jpg

As you can see the wiring had seen better days…

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180sx-wiring-4.jpg

.. this obviously wasn’t the first time either, several of the wires have previously been wrapped from where the insulation is broken, the inner lip of the arch has been bent up and the loom seems to have been moved slightly up as well.

We however had to deal with the 5 or so wires that where truely buggered, out came the soldering iron and I began getting to work. I am by no means an expert with a soldering iron so it was a good crash course in getting it right!

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180sx-wiring-5.jpg

A couple of the wires had to be crimped instead of soldered, due to the solder not wanting to stick, but we got them all fixed.

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180sx-wiring-6.jpg

The loom was wrapped back up, and then located higher in the arch to keep it out of harms way. To keep it in place we zip tied it up using the holes at the top of the arch.

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180sx-wiring-7.jpg

The wing was put back on, a little more snug than usual, and job done!

Moral of the story, if you are lowering your S13, relocate the loom before it takes any damage!!!"

Just a little update;

The car is in a garage at the moment getting a newly developed fuel leak repaired. We thought we had fixed it last weekend but alas it's started pissing fuel out all over the top of the tank again so I thought sod it just pay somebody to do such an horrible job.

My pair of wide 18" black face ssr sp1's hasn't arrived yet, the American seller has dissapeared for over three weeks now and i've opened a paypal dispute against him. I'm hoping it's a misunderstanding as he seemed quite legit (lots of posts, many friends and a good trader rating) but as each day passes without these wheels turning up I guess it's less and less likely that i'll ever see them! Grr.. £800 well spent :thumbs:

Other then that nothing much has happened with the car, it's been sat off the road for three weeks since the fuel leak started and i've not had enough time at the weekends to look at it. I did have a load of stickers turn up, some Okishima Project ones (thanks Quail :D) and some other manufacturer decals. I'm not 100% happy with the s15 spoiler, i'm starting to wonder how well the car would look despoilered with the dishy wheels. Hmm..

That sounds sad.. I hope the SSRs still find their way to your door!

The car would look way better without the S15 spoiler, I am quite sure!
Although it looks better than the S15 with its spoiler, get rid of it..

Go for a small M3 lip on the trunk and a GPsports roof wing.

Roof wings are the new BGWs!

I just picked the car up from the garage and i'm very happy :) The lines were cut and replaced and now no leak, it was for quite reasonable money. Three days earlier then expected as well.

I've had a few more development with my car so I thought i'd share!

My paypal case with getting the money back from this dick head in the states has finished and unfortunately i've got jack shit back. It ruled in my favour but he already took out the money. I'm gonna follow this up with a bank fraud investigation if I can and also i'm gonna be getting the popo involved and hopefully the LA police can bring him up on charges. http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/180-lowered-4.jpg

On a brighter note, spanner wielding Morfee went at my coilovers today to lower them. We managed to lop off 15mm from the front and 25mm from the rear. The rear is rubbing so I need to chisel out this part of the inner arch on one side to give it clearance but the front was fine. I think we can lose another 10mm off the front max, we might look into this in the future.

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/ssr-chrome.jpg

I found a pair of chrome SP1's, they were imported from the states by a dude from here which then got sold on to another dude from here and now they should be on their way to me :) They are 17" 9j et+37. Condition looks fantastic and the chrome seems to be nicely intact. With my front spacers the wheels should sit at +22, so I will be losing a little off the stance (+15 at the moment) but the new rears will pull it off.

I'm going to run my 18" 9.5j Sp1's at the rear and sell my garsons to free up some money which i'm going to promptly plough into a brand new pair of wide chrome SP1's to match the front. I'm looking at 18" 10.5j et+5 (with the same dish as the et-20). Those will look superb and the 17/18 is going to look awesome.

http://www.180sx.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/contributer-gallery/carbonpillar.jpg

Finally I got myself some carbon pillar covers, they were cheap and off the bay but quality looks good and the carbon effect looks pretty nice.

Cheap man about £24.

I attached them to the car today and was pretty dissapointed, the edges are cut too short and slightly the wrong angle so they haven't stuck properly. I'm already thinking of binning them - I guess that's why they call them 'ebay shit' :wack:

I wouldn't recommend them!

The downside is they cost a fortune and they are being custom made, so i'm looking at July until I get them :eek::eek::eek:
