Right -

So at the end of last week I ordered another Exedy stage 1 clutch and refaced flywheel from APT, just waiting for it to arrive then can get it fitted and have the car moving again

So to start off I had always been hunting for wheels and needed some cheapish, light and pref 17's for cheaper tyres, so what else would you buy really?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/288b_1.jpg
Not in the greatest of condition but onl 1 bit of kerbing the rest just scuffs and scrapes, so theyll do for me :)

Needed some tyres for them though, purchased some 245/45/17's for the back and 225/45/17's for the front from Camskill for a decent price.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/STH70525.jpg

And fitted.......

5mm spacer on the front for clearance, just misses the coilover and no more!

With that done and no clutch yeat I had to sort a niggly speaker problem.

the Drivers door speaker wasnt working, so i bought 4 of these:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/Picture028.jpg

nothing silly just a nice cheap upgrade, fitted the speakers and the drivers door speaker still didnt work  then realised it did work when the radio was played, but not with CD's. thatll be the cd changer then :annoyed: Have a new Sony USB/MP3 headunit on order, should be here tomorrow for the trvalling tuuuuuuuunes!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/Picture027.jpg

with that done I fixed a couple of niggly bits, relocated a harness strap, fixed a wiper arm, checked brake pads and put the rubber boot rings back on :whip: then called it a day :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/Picture030.jpg

so thats where im upto, hopefully the next update will consist of the clutch being done but im working the rest of the week to apy for it all so time working on it is limited :(

I found i got wheel wobble running a 5mm spacer with the same setup, as the wheel woundn't centralise on the hub. You can get away witha 3mm spacer which lets the wheel sit properly plus you get some extra threads.
I had to have the suspension set at a centain height so the lip went between the collar and spring (very close) but no wheel wobble and more secure. (sorry bout the pic on your thread but thought it may be helpful) good luck with the tune up matey!

You will easily do that :D with the working machine that is Graham at DCMS :Plug: we started that lot 10 hours before setting off for the ferry to the ring :wack: we also put the map in the ECU, changed rear hubs, rear brakes, custom brake pipes, turbo, manifold, stereo, loads of suspension stuff and did all the alignment, plus lots of other bits n bobs. As long as you have a garage and help, you will be fine :D:wave:

Well today I had 3 things I wanted to do.......

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/01072008046.jpg

Fit my new Sony Mp3/USB headunit

Installed it in the bottom Din position, played fine and worked, put all the dash back in, went to change CD....whats this? oh the fascia cant open as it hits the dash :annoyed: feck, so out all the dash came again and refitted into the top din panel. works nicely though, so much better than standard.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/01072008051.jpg

Fit new plugs: Denso IK24's for stage 2

nothng major, old IK22's had been in about 20k anyway and ive been having intermittent missfire probs at high revs (poss spark being blown out?) so fitted these first then if continues shall change coilpacks to the spares i have here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/01072008057.jpg
old vs new

and fit this bit of Bling courtesy of Tinnysteve :Plug: on this board who put in all the work for this for me. Its not that shiny at the moment as my oily handprints were all over it

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/01072008059.jpg

Gasket was a PITA to get into position and line up correctly but on my 5th go i think i got it :wack: put it all back together and fired her up, runs on 4, no wobbly revs and no oil peeing out the rocker cover - job done for today.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/01072008060.jpg

My clutch arrives tomorrow and being fitted monday, by then hopefully ill have some more nice gooides (alignment arms, st2 chip) to fit. Also remeber i want to get my aircon working (new condenser) before i go so i can keep nice and cool

im off for a mahoosive asda pizza and a crate of stella :smash::sleep:

Hate to say it but new tyres are going to be shite.

I went to the ring with brand new FK452's, brilliant tyre for half a lap, then the overheat and you get no grip what so ever. I'll be going with cut slicks next time (ALL the locals run them)

On a side note, i have the same front brake setup as you, although i have Brembo grooved discs and Project Mu pads - amazing setup

Good luck, s14a's are surprisingly capable!!

my brother and I have a surprisingly similar project on the go with our S14, also aiming for a nurburgring trip in lat summer, although possibly a few weeks later than you... good luck with the build!!

We've got a list as long that's as my dong to get through, and all with only 2 more pay cheques each to do it all with AND pay for a shakedown airfield day and the trip across the water:( ...I'm praying for a bonus this weekend!! :whip:

Best of luck!

woop! shes ALIVE! new clutch and flywheel fitted, the old one is ruined, may chuck up some pics of the old 1 tomorrow for some giggles.

Ive got my uni graduation this week and its peeing with rain so progress is slow at the moment however fitting the new IK24's seems to have cured my intermittent missfire so happy days on that front, 1 more thing checked off the list.

strongly dissagree, especially for some one going to the ring for the first time.

first trip to the ring I was on cut slicks, really grip well but you really need to know the track well as they will break out alot quicker than a more budget tyre. also the ring often has rain and then the slicks become dangerous (did 2 laps with standing water) and also the wet patches on exits of corners in the shade of the trees can be interesting and offputting for someone who really needs to be concentrating on other things for the first visit!

I ran 225,45,17 Fk452's on the front and 205,50,16 on the back of my 180sx at the ring a month ago. they didn't overheat, was really impressed with them as a budget tyre and was keeping up with track spec m3's and putting in around 8min laps.

admitadly there are better tyres out there but for the money there spot on and for a learning trip of the ring they will be perfect.

btw, cool project, good luck and have fun out there :D

How's your track knowledge? If you've never been, get hold of Gran Turismo 4 and also the DVD "In Car 956" - let Derek Bell show you the way around!

I went last year, and a couple of hundred laps (years ago) in Grand Prix Legends, plus the above and some YouTube videos, definitely paid off. It's not the same as real track time, but it's a lot better than attacking it blind - I did 8 laps in a variety of conditions, and came home with the car intact which was my main aim for the trip!

(I wasn't timing, but judging by 'nearest minute' on the clock I was running mid-11s in the dry, and a mid-12 minute in the damp/wet with standard power.)

Track knowledge is worth a lot of horsepower or suspension mods, and I think that's particularly true at the 'Ring - it's not like a track day where there are only half-a-dozen corners to get the hang of.

ive been watching videos (zonda setting the fastest production car lap:eek:) and been playing forza, although would prefer GT4, im not expecting to set the track alight, just have a solid car underneath me and enjoy the experience.

The Falken 452's i want to run for a fair while when i get back too as my everyday wheels, thats why i chose them, my budget couldnt stretch to much better.

well ive orderd a fair chunk of bits which im waiting to arrive from various peeps.

Apex adjustable alignment arms - bushed version
Apex Shiny hotpipe (bit of bling for the F&M show this weekend)
Apex shiny fannymold cover (felt it was getting a bit hot under the bonnet without one and for a bit of bling again)

thanks to Mike from apex for sorting me out with these

also was unhappy with my brakes after having a spirited drive with my new repsonsive powerz! and them not really repsonding so decided to take action, so i bought 350z brembo's all round and BMC, although ill prob only keep/fit the fronts.

also bought this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/Math1986/Ring/17072008069.jpg
nice and cheap at £55 and will do the job for the ring and any other trackdays i do :) need to get some gloves to go with :D

well was at totb yesterday so not had a chance to do much.

tried to get my old tc arms off to replace with new adjustables and the nuts are stuck solid so will need to think of another way or get the blow torch on them.

instead i had a tin of underseal which i thought id put on as much as i can to keep underneath a little cleaner, only a small tin so managed a coat on the drivers side arches and some of the floor.

well the day is getting ever closer! only 5 days to go and still loads to do!

Saturday: rolling road day with the scottish sxoc side and she made a healthy 304.7bhp with 296lbft overfuelling a little bit but nothing else to worry about :D

Today - went out and attacked the brakes, bought a big drill to enlarge the hub mounting holes to 14mm which went well but couldnt get the caliper mounted properly, 1 bolt was fine, the other would not bolt in, may have some damaged threads :(

got rained on about 4 times with some thunder storms so had to pack up and call it a day, its away into the garage tomorrow to have the antiroll bars, alignment arms and now my new brakes fitted too.

will scan in some power charts in a minute.

Just enjoy the track.... hit the throtle and drive like Yellowbird ;)

I have bought some Toyo R888 225/45-17 to my S14.... I would have bought 235/40-17 but I dont think there is enough clearance in the back because of the side arch's....
I will not hit another track without that kinde of tyre, they just provide much more grip when oem street tyres.

I hope your going to record a lap and post it here - remember that youtube.com only allows movie clips that has a max lenght of 10min00sec ;););)!

Mr write up of my trip :)

right well, i managed to get the moajority of the things i needed and wanted done done, got my brakes fitted, had the wrong discs.....twice :( but a trip to nissan the day before we left and its all sorted, a quick alignment setup at CLCM and i was good to go!

i have loads of pics but will upload these in a bit.

left on friday lunchtime and drove to Newcastle to get the ferry, all the antics getting cars ready etc had drained us and we didnt rule the ferry that night as intended :D ( a friends mk2 golf got an mot to go 1 hour before we left!)

saturday we drove from amsterdam to the Nurburgring and settled in at our hotel the Ringhaus, there was a 1000km endurqnce race qualifying on so went and had a peek at that then the track opened at teatime.

we went down and i decided to do my first ever lap as a passenger to see what it was all about (out in a Focus ST), into the 5th corner and 2 bikes go off right infront of us, luckily they stayed on the bike but my nerves were in tatters lol! :wack:

anway the remainder of that lap was good, into the caraselle....bang! whats that? when entering the car park found that the 2 year odl mongoose had snapped clean off at the flange, gutted :(

so off to do my first ever lap as a driver and i was getting humped by everything, had flies dying on my rear windscreen i felt i was going so slow! :wack: but i survived:smitten:

the next day i did another 3 laps and was learning the track better and better but after lunch chilled and went to brunchen and watched a vx220 spin off and smack the barier :(

final day i had 4 laps on my ticket left so was in the mood! went out and had my friend in his elise giving me a tow round to help me get the lines and i fell in love, was able to take everything so much quicker! by the time i did my 5th and final lap that day i was screaming past bmw's and other various cars without a blink, the gradients and variation of speed into and out of corners is awesome!

unfortunately saw a british Focus RS hit the barrier hard during 1 of my laps and it wasnt a pretty site, esp seeing 3 occupants rolling about on the ground :(

went round as a passenger in my mates lotus elise :smitten: and my other friends 350z and coundlt beleive how quick the track could be done :D:cool:

novel over!

highlights:

The track
Steak on a Stone
a mate winning £250 on a bandit on the return ferry and ot buying a round all night :D

and to top it all my 12 year old Nissan 200sx was the ONLY car out of our six that required no maintenance during the trip, only checking fluid levels and temps before going out each time :smitten:

now...... what do i do for the 2009 trip?!

Hi i was there friday to monday in a red 16v 106 rallye
I saw a couple of red Rallyes, nice:thumbs:

watched a vx220 spin off and smack the barier :(

unfortunately saw a british Focus RS hit the barrier hard during 1 of my laps and it wasnt a pretty site, esp seeing 3 occupants rolling about on the ground :(

now...... what do i do for the 2009 trip?!
Was that the black 220? He was back fairly smartly, taped up and ready to carry on :D

The RS wasn't so nice as you say, track was closed for about an hour after that one. Biker on Sunday morning was worst of the weekend

2009.... If the car's good, get tuition  if I could afford it, I would - track knowledge is all that matters around the Ring.

i loved it, i feel very sad inside that its another year before we go back :(
I thought that when I got back in June...somehow ended up out there again and did twice as many laps :D

First week of October has some good opening times :wack: ;)

Stop waiting, seriously

It took me 5 years to finally get there after I first decided I wanted to go, went in June this year and it was amazing. Just got back from a second trip on Monday. 2 people who were out at the same time last weekend were on honeymoon camping!

Costs vary - you can camp for €12 a day (not night, add a little for leccy if you want) or hotel it for normal to silly money, €30 - €100 a night area. Foods not too bad, breakfast is usually included at hotels, there's Lidl and Aldi close and restaurants aren't too bad, €10 a night if you go out without spending much or 25 if you go for steak on a stone :smitten:

Pax laps are good for learning and usually free (you will need a helmet with most people though, and think about the car you're in if the driver doesn't mind you going lidless), or just a beer in the evening.

The expensive bits are laps and petrol. It's deceptively tiring, as you are flat out (speed and/or concentration depending) for 9-14 minutes, and don't forget you're up mountains so altitude plays a part too - so think how many you want, because you'll always want more! But it ain't cheap, although you could always sell your ticket to someone before you leave or stick it on ebay when you're home if you don't use them all. I did about 1250 miles last weekend - 4 day trip, 26 laps. First trip I got 13 laps in over the 5 days I was there for comparison, bear in mind that you may spend some of those miles flat but the majority is motorway boredom.

Ramble ramble, just go and do it. You can do a 3 or 4 day weekend for not all that much. And let me know if you do!

the thing i worry about so much is the car getting hot on the ring, i had to come off coombe after 4 laps as the RB overheated and that was with a huge celica rad and electric fan :(

i have a better fan and an ally rad this time but i really cant see it being loads better than the previous set up, time will tell i suppose tho. s13s really are crap for airflow to the rad when you have an FMIC aint they :(.

my house mates went this year and im going with them next year, i have no doubt the car can take it, its just the coolant temps i worry about and thats the only reason i didnt go this year.

If you have a cooling problem at all, it WILL be shown up on the Ring, you will never put your car through any harder driving in about 10 minutes. Do everything you can before you go.

i have a stock radiator and it handles the ring no problem but i did a lap, came in let it col etc.

im not sure what to do now, feel like ive built the car to a high standard and had my fun so may sell up and progress to something better, m3 zm coupe or 350z something along those lines.

Did you have any gauges in it to show oil/water temp?

Last year, before i bought my s14, i did a BTG 9min25sek at the ring. There were a bit of rain and plenty of people on the track. If the coast had been clear I think I could have done it in 9min or so.

But he is driving with a rotex compressor system, forged internals, cams and so on, putting down 400-415bhp at the flywheel. And my teg had about 210bhp.

It's OK, if you know the place well though. My Nokia doesn't have a stopwatch as it goes! I do have a GPS setup on it though, and have timed 3 laps now but there's no timer running so you just switch it on and leave it alone so it isn't hanging over you.

How many trips/laps have you done? 8:30 is a pretty quick time, don't go chasing it hard....

I think I have done about 20laps and 100+ on the PlayStation 2/GranTurismo 4. Playing that game was a huge advantage as I postet 9min45sec on my 6th lap ever in my TEG :).

When the engine is finished it will produce 400-450bhp the turbo will be the Greddy TD0620G SH.
Overheating should not be a problem as I have bought a 50mm or 60mm thick alu radiator and a 13row oilcooler.
Maybe my suspension setup i a bit to stiff as the springrate i 8k in the front and 6k in the rear.
My tyres are the R888 so the traction should be good :).

My pleasure mate  Pisses me off when tossers don't watch their mirrors or just plain don't let you past and it's stupidity like this that causes accidents so it's great when people pay attention and follow the rules! I had 2 or 3 E30s, several bikes and a GT3 all deliberately holding me up that weekend, even when flashing one of the beemers and that particular Porsche, I had to resort to beeping my horn at them and even when they moved over, obviously I had no run on them and no power either in a little MX5 so it carried on yet again

No wonder there's so many accidents when so many people show up and don't know or just don't follow the rules, then all go out at once.

I'm hoping to camp over there for a few weeks next summer, hopefully see some of you out there  :D
