View Full Version : My S15 Twin Turbo V8 Drift Car - Project

Hi all, i hope you don't mind but i wanted to share my S15 V8 Drift car project with you. I have been keeping Driftworks up to date over the past few months but i thought it might be worth while posting it on here for you all to see! This is the SXOC After all! Story goes like this

The S15 has been provided by Jap Performance Parts in Crawley and they managed to source me a very very lightly damaged one from the auctions in Japan. In mid 2007 the container with my S15 in landed in Crawley and I was there at 8:00 in the morning just in time to catch the container lorry pull in.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/guishnu/S15/CIMG0127.jpg

16 tons of container loaded with parts. Apparently, this was a really light one!

Like opening a really big Christmas prezzie...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/guishnu/S15/CIMG0129.jpg

Goodies!

Working our way back through 40ft of jam packed container...

Before we rolled her into the workshop for the night...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/guishnu/S15/CIMG0157.jpg

There was some light cosmetic damage to the car and everything that's damaged i would have scrapped anyway. Bumpers, bonnet, bootlid, wings etc. The car is a 2000 model and has only done 70,000kms. It's a very rare Spec R AUTOMATIC (larger transmission tunnel) and was previously owned by a woman. Which means it's had a fairly easy life. LOL

Jap Performance Parts also sourced me a complete 1993 infinity Q45 which they promptly cut up in Japan and shipped me everything from just behind the A Pillar forwards. The engine going in the S15 is going to be a custom modified VH45DE running a pair of dirty great big turbo’s  technical term.

Here is a video clip of the engine Nizpro built to go in a jet boat in Australia. Standard bottom end, valve springs, cams, turbo's and mapping + a few other bits. I believe it is running over 800hp on pump fuel very reliably.
Turn up your volume...

So!!
Next we finished stripping the shell and I collected the car on my trailer, for our first of (what im hoping will be) many journeys together.

Next the front clip arrived and the engine was stripped out of it and then plonked into storage for a bit. The stripping process to A BLOODY AGE and with work commitments piling up, it took me much longer than expected to get to this point in the build. However, I finally finished stripping the chassis and plonked it on the trailer for our trip up to see those nice boys at RS Fabrications in Banbury. They started to work on it pretty much straight away.

The RS crew have been fantastic! Massivly profesisonal and knowledgable in the art of fabrication and chassis prep. The car is now mounted on the rotisserie so they can flip it over and work on the underside of the chassis. I also took up the engine, gearbox and a few other bits and pieces to fix the dink in the chassis leg. More to come!

More!
The guys at RS Fabrications have been working away really well. A lot of the chassis holes have been filled in and the whole floor pan is being/finished seam welding. The boot floor as also been cut out and replaced with a single flat panel and the fuel filler has been sealed up.
Take a look -

Cage is in, chassis leg/front slam panel is fixed. The front and rear arch tubs are complete – all in all, it’s some of the best fabrication work I have ever seen.

Thanks folks, im really pleased with the cage. It looks fantastic and the way that it blends into the dash support is just a work of art. It’s all built in T45 which is nice  and isn’t “OTT” like a lot of cages I have seen lately are. Every bar that’s there has a function and it’s been well thought out. I have not actually seen the car with the engine in yet, but it’s all done! Just waiting to be sent some pictures because at the moment im kind of on the edge of my seat! Im tremendously lucky to have support from both Jap Performance Parts and those diamonds at Apex Performance on the project! Expect to see a pretty special drive train and suspension setup in the works fairly shortly!

One of the biggest issues with this project so far is finding a clutch that can cope with the power but after discussing the situation with CG Motorsport (one of my supporters from back in 2005) they seem fairly confident that they have an Exedy triple plate carbon unit that will cope with the power 

There are a billion and one things that need to be done on the car before it’s anywhere near finished but it’s getting there. As soon as the season is finished in early September all of my energy will be focused on this project and then it will really get rolling good and proper.

Don't Carbonetic (http://www.carbonetic.net/) claim that once you install one of their clutches, you won't ever need a new one? Should be a good one to test!

Oh yes!!!

What’s the engine/transmission spec?

Engine Spec is all planned spec as it's not been built as yet, but your looking at

4.5ltr VH45DE
- Custom Twin Aluminium Inlet Manifolds
- 1000cc top feed injectors x8
- Custom Aeromotive billet fuel rails
- Custom Tubular Exhaust Manifolds
- Owen Developments GT2835R 0.86ar turbo’s *as a starting point*
- Tial External Waste Gates & Screamer Pipes
- Uprated Valve Springs (surprisingly exhaust valves are the same as the GTIR’s SR20DET)
- Ferriday 1.2mm Head Gaskets
- Forged, Keronite Coated Pistons (8.2:1 compression ratio)
- ARP Head Stud Kit
- ARP Rod Bolts

- 300zx Z32 gearbox
- Exedy Triple Plate Carbon Clutch Kit
- Ally prop and half shafts R33 GTR rear end. R230 diff, Twin intercoolers/funky radiator setup – yada yada yada. Im not going to give all the secrets away now! It’s meant to be a surprise!

Im still trying to decide on engine management to be honest with you – im tied up between Gems, Haltech and Motec

Nice one Chris,

Glad yours is coming along.

We're about to start the engine build for mine, looking like a pair of GT35R's should do the trick. I've just bought a bodyworks business so I can spend forever getting it the way I want !!! Hopefully once you've busted a few clutches and done some testing I'll know what the best solution is for the transmission :D :D I might go Tremec tbh.

Catch up soon fella,

All the best,

J.

Oh and Motec all the way dude,

Not worth feckin about !!

I think you'll find the Z32 gearbox a touch too small but I could be wrong. I havent looked at my transmission spec for a long long time !! Although in fainress Im going for 500bhp more than you so you are still kinda in "higher end skyline" territory whereas Im basically fcuked !! :D :D

Okay!
Updates are coming thick and fast at the moment – Engine and gearbox have been fitted into the chassis, cross member/cradle have all been fabricated, so this is how it stands as of today! As you can see, it’s been mounted as far back and as low as possible. The engine is also shorter than the likes of an RB or JZ engine and weighs a lot less – so it shouldn’t feel too front end heavy.

I don’t know about you guys, but now the engine is in I get the feeling that this car is going to be very mean. It just looks almost evil sitting there. Weird.

Cross Member Fabricated to take engine + more power

Interesting question and not one i can easily answer to be honest. A number of reasons come to mind. Firstly that a couple of VH45DETT have been built in Australia and work very well and reliably. Im fairly experienced with turboed nissans (i have had a fair few now) and I know very little about super chargers at all. I also think bonnet bulges look gash.

I guess the real answer to your question is that i feel much more comfortable going the Twin Turbo route than super charger. Plus, the sound of two turbo's with two 1/4 pannel exiting exhausts (one each side) and two external waste gates linked to two screamer pipes (exiting just behind the wheel) on full chat with 4.5 litres of V8 engine behind it should sound a bit... well....

Nice.

Hi Mark,
The original plan was to do an S13 front end on the car. However the reasoning behind that was because it "hasn't been done" in Europe. Unfortunatly, somebody else here has already done it with a supercharged RB30 powered jobbie. So im now leaning towards my original idea of "GT CAR STYLING" There are a good couple of people out there looking for bodywork bits and Simon at SJS Design Factory (responsible for all the graphics design etc on my S14.5 and PS13) is in the process of coming up with a complete cosmetic design for it.

I don't know if that answers your question or not really buddy!

:wack:

With regards to who's the maddest, mine or phils? At the moment - it's Phil's! Due to the fact that Phil's is actually driving and compeating and mine is not even a rolling chassis! Roll on mid march 2009 after both cars are offically and compeatly shaken down and ready for the season? Who knows. I will tell you one thing though, Phil's an amazing driver :)

LOL :wack:
sorry i didn't reply to your other comments James. I got lost within the thread!
Reason for running the Z32 box is that it's strong right off the shelf. Im using a carbon tripple plate cluch with should take some of the transmisison snatch out of the train and help maximise box life. The other great thing about the Z32 box is that PPG do a gear kit for them, which is 1000hp rated. So i could potentilaly upgrade at some point in the future (if needed and funds allow) without having to totally swap boxes. The Z32 clutch also bolts straight up to the VH45DE as does the starter motor.

Im trying to adopt a "Keep it simple" attitude. That way, if i blow a box or kill a clutch, they are all off the shelf items easily replacable, rather than one off custom bits. Unfortunatly when building a car like this, you can only keep it simple to such a degree.

bladerider
25-06-2008, 13:45
I know pal,

Ive GOT a Z32 box and carbon prop in the S13 now, but I still wouldnt rely on one for 1300bhp+ but maybe just for the first setup its worth using just for shakedowns like you say. Dont forget the Stagea will probably weigh a couple hundred kilos more than your S15, so it will give the transmission that little bit more of a hard life !!Tremecs are easily enough available, they arent THAT expensive compared to all the other things and to be honest I quite like being different.

Simple is good - its about the only way I'd understand whats going on !!

I have to ask - why didn't they just fabricate a new front member that didn't require the spacer plates?

Not a clue to be honest buddy. The spacer plates are there to lower the engine (obviously) in my mind it makes very little difference if they are spacer plates or a welded together cross member. Unless you know different mate? Unfortunatly the budget is not unlimited on this project. Building a compleatly new cross member is extreamly expensive.

As well as lowering the engine they also lower the front arms/steering rack/etc. Just means having to work around non-standard geometory at the front.

Still looks like awesome work from RS

Yup, i figured that :)
I was trying to figure out if it would adjust the roll centre, but i couldn't quite get my head around how a spacer on the subframe and increasing the angle of the bottom arm will actually effect the handling of the car. I can always just remove the spacer if i need too.

.......
I guess the real answer to your question is that i feel much more comfortable going the Twin Turbo route than super charger. Plus, the sound of two turbo's with two 1/4 pannel exiting exhausts (one each side) and two external waste gates linked to two screamer pipes (exiting just behind the wheel) on full chat with 4.5 litres of V8 engine behind it should sound a bit... well....

The whole thread reads well and it looks like an incredible project but that car will sound absolutely amazing. Can't wait to see (and more importantly hear) the final product, pressuming you post up loads of vids of course. Best of luck with it man, its definately one I'll be keeping an eye on...

Well,
This is a very mini (not much has happened) update. I actually went and saw the car for the first time in a while on Saturday and it blew me away. The pictures DO NOT due the car justice. I know it's my car and i shouldn't be bragging, but im so impressed. The quality of the work is second to none - the best fab work, i have ever seen, on any jap car build. Ever. Tis Awsome.

Something interesting that i didn't notice from the pictures...

Below, you see the suspension turret. The roll cage goes through the firewall, connects onto it and the strut brace tabs are welded on top. What i DIDN'T realise was that they have plated the top and back of the tower to re-enforce it. Most people just weld in a plate onto where the cage extension mounts but they re-fabricated the whole strut top.
I don't know why im suprised... but i am :)

All that im waiting for now is the PS13 to sell and i can really kick this project on in a big way. If anybody wants a the Marangoni PS13 drift car for £6500. Please let me know :)

Hi Mark,
So im now leaning towards my original idea of "GT CAR STYLING" There are a good couple of people out there looking for bodywork bits and Simon at SJS Design Factory (responsible for all the graphics design etc on my S14.5 and PS13) is in the process of coming up with a complete cosmetic design for it.
I will tell you one thing though, Phil's an amazing driver :)

GT Widebody defo the way forward:thumbs:
After watching Phils project then seeing it in action,Awsom it is,I cant wait to see this monster dueling with Phil's.The build is amazing, the quality of the welding and fab looks second to non, gonna be a squeeze getting them turbo's in there?,doesn't look like much room:wack: Keep the pics coming.

I have to ask - why didn't they just fabricate a new front member that didn't require the spacer plates?

They plates look like aluminium. I reckon they may well be there to help combat vibration as ally is softer (albeit stiffer!) than steel.

Just read the last few pages :o not had a look on here for a bit! Beautiful welding there! And I'd love the Marangoni PS13 drift car but, for me at the moment, you'd have to knock a 0 off the end!!

Hi guys :)
The project is "on going" unfortunatly the costs associated to this project are just astronomical. I was perfectly prepaired to throw the money needed at the car to finish it in quick snap time but unfortunatly due to the credit crunch im a lot more aprehensive about pushing vast quantities of money into a project when it's extreamly difficult to pull it out if i got into trouble financially (unlikley, but the world is a funny place at the moment) i guess you can say im being very cautious where i spend my dosho for the next 6 - 12 months.

On a positive note, i am picking the car up from RS Fabrications in a week or so and will have it back at home where i can tinker away. Some progress will likley be made then :) It's nice to know the car has so much interest attatched to it. Hopefully i won't dissapoint :wack:

Thanks

Not as yet mate, it's back from RS Fabrications and they have all finished. It's due to go off to Janspeed to get the engine ancilleries fabricated. But im just waiting till they have the capacity to fit it in. They are a tad busy with a whole load of stuff for Lotus at the moment.

So im waiting and puting some time and effort into finishing the engine for the R34.
