View Full Version : Work on S13 "Ebay Special" begins

If Internet did not existed in our age, I would not have done even one half of the things I did because of it.
So decided to pay a tribute to one of the pillars of it, to accomplish my quest to refine a smart S13, street oriented.

Ebay has been so far the sole channel for procuring parts, of course I owe primarily to this forum the ability to discern between things.
To them, an anticipated thank you, the ones in the knowing side.

So please be understanding here. This is not go to be the thread for the super-duper motors, the exorbitant budget project, nor the welding master pictorial. It's just the humble work done by an inexperienced guy , with just reasonable time and money, trying to improve his 200SX.

To begin with, I had to find another mechanic, as the chosen one, my S13 former owner couldn't do it (as he quit) . I regret not to be able to work with him, the guy has talent, as he is below 10" with the Delta Integrale turbo that he run in drag races often winning them

Good guy, Armando, we worked slowly but accurately and by now he knows how I want things done. Good garage, tidy and clean, all the necessary tools, except the lathe wasn't working due as, I we have needed it :(

No more words, let's begin with the the mandatory parts defile'

http://pbevila.fastmail.fm/public/S13/pic1.jpg

Godpeed ASW, tension rods, upper rear arm.
KYB AGX, cheap springs (8/7)
Ebay top mounts (more on them later)
Energy bushings set
Underdrive pulleys
Turbo manual controller

Anyway, I gave Armando the lowdown and we got started. Ready for exciting pics of a standard and dirty S13 ?

Nice oil leak here. I hope it's the cams cover missing a bolt or two, have to get it cleaned and will find what it is. All the rest in good order except of course for what we're going to replace.

http://pbevila.fastmail.fm/public/S13/pic3.jpg

The rear will have his part too. I'm not ready yet to work on the subframe, but that will follow. Everything will have to be clean and tidy eventually.

Well here is the super secret scoop about the Ebay top mounts when used with KYB's: they fit OK but you should have 4 metal bushing lathed for a perfect fit. I will post a drawing of the needed bushes later. Since the lathe wasn't working "the alternative" solution was to knock (easily sewed) the hex off the nuts given with the mounts, and use another apt bushing on the top of the mount.

Since all this tremendous work was also interrupted by a visit to the ice cream parlor with Armando and Angelo, we didn't progressed much after that , however for basic suspension work we should be done tomorrow.

You're now done watching Part 1 of the "Ebay Special" thread, candidate most plain thread of the year (but there may be surprises soon).
You will now be returned to your regular SXOC experience.
Thank you.

Interested on pics of how you got around the KYB/ebay top mounts problem

Please ignore this. Will post shorty with the correct mod needed for the mounts.

One after another my packages have arrived, carrying the next wave of parts to complete a nice overhaul of the interior, and something more.

http://pbevila.fastmail.fm/public/S13/PICT0013%20(Medium).JPG

- Momo "tuner" leather steering wheel and hub.
- Prosport electrical "fantastic gauges", and DIN support, oriented.
- Sandwich plate for sensors.
- OEM shifter rubber boot.
- Laptop car mount, telescopic and adjustable. Needed for tuning and wardriving.
- IBM Thinkpad OEM universal AC/DC power supply.
- Retainers set for Nissan, will keep door cards and parts in place.
- Cerwin-vega 6.5" speakers, cross-overs, and laser-cut supports.
- Widebeam dash white LEDs.
- Kenwood head unit - MP3 player adapter cable.
- Thrust bearings for proper installation of shock topmounts. Don't ask.
- Driftworks polyuretane rear subframe bushings and the accompanying gums.
- Polished front engine bay plate. Mucho bling here.
- Silicone water hoses, black but dirty cheap.
- And, yes, Megasquirt! for this baby I still need to build a proper harness and sensors. I will particularly detail this side of the work.

Enough stuff to keep me busy for a while, beside I've not done the subframe yet.

After I'm comfortable with the interior, rest will follow.

how far you planning on going with the car?

how far you planning on going with the car?

It won't be a radical project as many are here, except for ECU where I can dedicate time and not much physical effort.

I'm aiming for a comfortable and fast S13. It will have everything, but never too much of anything.

gonna try ebay turbos etc?

good on you for going for it rather than spending bigger money on reputations

No Ebay turbo mate. It has to be a very good one or will have to wait.

Other XS/SSA stuff I can try, but none is really needed now.

Is not that I want to build it cheap, ebay just makes it easier, beside with current exchange rate certain things are almost a steal. i paid only Eur 50 to customs so far, that's fair I guess :)

With the subframe on the bench and cleaned, I was determined to knock them off with a rotary cutter. I also had a great blade and the inclination to do a precise work.

Well, I gave up. The weights are very well soldered to the subframe, not just kept in place by the sheet metal around. The inner one are especially difficult to cut unless and may require chiseling, and you are cutting on the thin bushing housing for the forward ones.

I'm not aiming for much weight reduction in general so decided to pass. Also saved on filling and painting. I'm ok with all that considering I'll have to spend time and money on the alignment now.

Work continues ...

I'm happy to be done with these bushings and arms. Guess-aligned, the car now handles horribly and is due for alignment ASAP.

Just two pics and I'm ready to move one with the other stuff.

Turns out that one of the ebay coolant hoses has been cut and doesn't fit, WFT. Will have to splice it someway. At least I've drained all the rusty water, put demineralized with a Calfort tablet.

A stupid exhaust gasket has turned parts stores clueless.... Have found a sort of substitute anyway.

The mechanic has warned me that he doesn't want to deal with mods anymore despite having been paid well. Oh well.

Work continues, but it's hard.

No more parts after these!

http://pbevila.fastmail.fm/public/S13/PICT0001%20(Medium).JPG

OEM KYB boots. Guess not many people cares about getting these, and are not exactly cheap too!

Blitz metallic mesh air filter - from a nice US serviceman in Japan.

Sanza Fuze, to complete the audio system. i like this one! Please note the $5 holder.

Now is either fit or die!

Fall/winter update:

Most important parts have been fitted now. The poor shape of the body makes me a little embarrassed to post pictures, but I'll try anyway, may be choosing the right angle it won't show too much. So in summary:

- Handles really well. Shocks set on the softer position are bearable on the stoned pavement in the city, and apparently quite good in highway and winding roads.

- I have nice interiors, waiting for a new headset and gauges to complete. Also, no leather yet.

- Some stuff received is either plain wrong, or useless - shocks top mount, shift stick...

- Need more power and torque!

- I don't like how it brakes at all. about 35 Kmh, from wheels just locks even on the slowing you before a fast turn.

- A TON of other little and big stuff need attention.

Considering I'm sitting home looking for a job, will spend time on it.

Summer update:

- Cylinder head completely overhauled: valves regrounded, conduits ported and matched, metal HG, a ton of other details.
- Brand new GT28R w/ braided lines.
- Small FMIC and battery
- Nistune!

Still missing:
- 440cc injectors and Z32 AFM (have them waiting)
- fuel pump (in the mail)
- temp sensor
- O2 wideband sensor (in the mail)
- Electric fans and controller
- Engine bay detailing - brackets, air filter heat-shield, expansion tank ?
- Lesjofor springs (got them already)
- Redstuff pads, new discs (ditto)

Not sure of the power right now, but it purrs and behaves, that's enough for me right now, certainly it has not been easy to get where it is now. I did everything myself.

Nice work on this mate, is that the software cable for the Nistune? Where can you pick up one of them, and does it plug into the ECU??:)

You need to buy an hardware board and a software license, then the cable comes free :)

I understand Jez here is a Nistune Official dealer and tuner.
