View Full Version : Nismo diff, halfshaft won't fit

Just fitted a Nismo GT Pro TT diff into my S14a, and I used the halfshafts that Nismo supplied with the diff.

The problem is, it seems that one of the halfshafts is to long! (see pictures)

Is it supposed to be like this? Ore have ive been supplied the wrong halfshafts?

i think you have the wrong output shafts. There is only one abs speed sensor on the s14a, it's on the input shaft, so the output shafts should not have those splines/teeth.
i almost had the same problem with the nismo gt pro, but avoided it by buying a kaaz instead!
there have been a number of cases reported on here and on driftworks of nismo diffs coming with the wrong output shafts. try the search tool and you should find some info hopefully

Ive just compared an S15 output shaft to this pic. The cogged wheel is a blank on the S15 output shaft, so the driveshafts should hook up OK.
I think its an optical illusion that theyre too long ;)

So you think it will work out okay?
The snap ring on the output shaft that seems to be to long did go in place, so there is no way I can get it any further in. Still it seems to be about 1cm to long compared to the other side.

Ah. Just noticed that 1cm difference. :wack:

Can I ask where you bought it?

You guys think it will be safe to drive like this?
Or should I take this outputshaft to a machineshop and have them make the shaft a bit shorter for me?

Also, for the other side, that seems to fit right, I found out today that the spring clip don't go in place, so I could pull it out with little force. But im wondering if Nismo made it like this by purpose, as you are supposed to remove this outputshaft in order to adjust the locking.

The partnr for my outputshafts are 38220-0V161, but I did not find much info about them :(

What model diff is it? Any chance of a part number. I'm looking at a Nismo 1.5 way at the moment and its working out really really cheap and I want to be sure that its going to fit.

Partnr for my diff is 38420-RSS22 - Nismo GT Pro TT 2-Way

have you not sorted the correct outputshafts yet?

That will be likely to leak oil like that.

I'm sure you probably have checked this, but when you build a diff you have to shim the actual diff longitudinally (ie pinion depth) and laterally with the shim to set the diff off centre. Have you checked it?

Have you any pics of the 2 shafts removed?

That part number is incomplete, there are another two digits on the end.

Looks like you have a Skyline LSD there. The shorter final drive changes the thickness of the ring gear and as a result the diff is "shimmed" from the opposite side of the casing, which could explain you "issue".

Are the halfshafts on a Nismo diff completely different to the factory item? Is it possible to put the halfshafts in the wrong way round on a Nismo diff?

Eplejus
30-03-2008, 23:56
Thats the only digits thats on the box. Can't find anything else.

Im quite sure the diff has been shimmed properly.
Both shafts got equal lenght, so its not possible to put them in wrong.

I haven't sorted out what output shafts to use, as I cant find any information about my problem :(

Another problem is that i dont have the OEM VLSD diff & output shafts as it has been sold.

I did send an email to RHDJapan, but I dont expect any help...

Seems to me you have 2 RHD shafts instead of one of each

Don't think so as none of the shafts seems to fit.

I think the complete partnr is 38420-RSS22-C5 as this is the only one that comes with 38220-0V161 output shafts.

i also have bought the same diff from RHDjapan but have not fitted it yet, and my halfshafts are the same as the ones pictured above, also the same part number on the boxes

Seems like im not the only one with this problem: http://www.driftworks.com/forum/technical/51110-nismo-gt-lsd-pro-problem.html

The 38220-4P071 and 38220-RSS50 looks like it could fit...

Im still waiting for reply from RHDJapan.

I know this doesn't help you but I can get the diff in a 1.5 way but without new shafts, ie I have to use my original ones. Will it fit or do I have to use the new shafts?

I have ordered new shafts from PerfectRun.
The partnumber for the shafts that should fit is: 38220-4P071 and 38220-RSS50
They are the shafts that are included in ones of Nismos diff kits.

These shafts are acctualy ment for S14 (JDM) with automatic transmission, but ive been told that these are the shafts that are needed to to used on a S14 Euro Spec. Apparently, there are some difference between the diff carriers on JDM and our Euro/UK models. I think our diff carriers are wider(?)

I will tell how it goes when I get my new shafts.

Okay, I have gotten the new shafts and decided to give it a try fitting them today.
They fitted just perfectly! The circlip on both sides did go in place.

Here you can see the difference, the shaft in the middle is one of the old ones.

Thats more like it!!!
Just seen the thread defo do not drive with the coged one!!!

Another thing to be careful of with JDM vs EURO spec is the diff bolts... you get a few that are M13 bolts (Like my S15 diff) The M12 bolt seem to hold it until you start driveing it hard... then they rattle out and blow holes through the diff cover!

The bolts that where supplied with the diff dident fit at all, to small, so I just used the old ones instead :)

I rang my local nissan dealer here and Ireland for a price on the half shafts that you got from Japan

..........WAIT FOR IT.....................

€1500 For the Right half shaft & €1300 for the left one.

Thats €2800 FOR 2 HALF SHAFTS!!!

I asked him to double check the part numbers and prices and that was the correct price!!

Dude, order from Greenline, PerfectRun or RHDJapan before trying Nissan dealers...

TomB
23-04-2008, 08:04
You shouldnt have to order them from another dealer if they were supplied incorrectly in the first place.

I have the same problem with my Nismo GT pro, and when ordered it was supplied to fit an S13, so gonna chase the supplier and get the right shafts sent.

Have been waiting so long for a good answer on this, I imagine the same shafts will be necessary for both S14 and S15
