Well i have been meaning to get this thread started for ages now and have finally got round to uploading the pics.
Had the car about a year now and its most certainly an ongoing project with bits done as and when i have the time and money.
Was originally going to be just a road car but then i started shedding weight for the strip and also want to make it useable for track days but still keep it street legal hence the title. It a bit of a schizophrenic car really :wack:
Quick current spec list and then on with the pics.
They might not all be in perfect order as i have been trying to remember what order stuff was done in but you should get the idea.

Main priority is to get the alignment stuff fitted so the car is actually driveable as i have messed the geometry up so much with fitting everything that its pretty much a danger on the roads at the moment. Hopefully i will get this done in april so by end of april it should be properly back on the road (havnt driven it properly for about 5 months now

Ok another small update (i did say it was ongoing :) )
Got another grill from someone on here so thought i would try my hand at some spraying (seemed such a good idea at the time.

This is the grill with the mesh that was bolted on removed and a bit of sanding - you can see all the old bolt holes that will need filling

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00038.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00038.jpg.html)

This is after some filler and sanding back with all the holes filled

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00018.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00018.jpg.html)

And this is after the first coat of paint (i didnt have any primer so went straight in with the black but didnt turn out at all wee so will have to get some primer (i have sanded it back slightly in this pic also but you can see where the bad bits are)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00058.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00058.jpg.html)

Thats as far as i got tonight so will get some primer tomorrow and flat it back again.

well i found some primer eventually last night so gave the grill a coat and this is the result after a light flatting back.

Still cant seem to get rid of this bad part in the middle (its hard to see in the pic)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000310.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000310.jpg.html)

However i did have this waiting for me when i got in :D:D

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000410.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000410.jpg.html)

Which contained all these

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00059.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00059.jpg.html)

The only thing is that the rear toe rods are labelled as S13:confused:does anyone know if they are the same for both a 13 and 14.

Cheers

15-04-2008, 19:58
Well i managed to get some more done this weekend.
First Job was to fit the tyres (well get Chris to struggle with them i should say)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00403.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00403.jpg.html)

They actually went on very easily which was a pleasant surprise for all involved

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00452.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00452.jpg.html)

Next job was to fit all the alignment arms and bushes

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00522.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00522.jpg.html)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00532.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00532.jpg.html)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00602.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00602.jpg.html)

The difference this made is unbelievable no more banging and crashing over bumps. Cant wait to get it all set up now which is happening wednesday at TGM so should be even better then:D

Then made a start on fabricating some seat mounts for the passenger seat. Wanted to get it as low as possible and as i didnt need it to slide we just made up some bars using the original seat mounting plates.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00612.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00612.jpg.html)

Still got more to do on this to space the left hand side up about 40mm to get the seat sitting level.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00764.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00764.jpg.html)

Also fitted my Aerocatches tonight (what a horrible job and one which i hope i wont have to do again for a long time)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00673.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00673.jpg.html)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00663.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00663.jpg.html)

But i think the result was worth it -

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00704.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00704.jpg.html)

And this is the current look (much better now the rear wheels sit better i think)

will do ben but i dont see that happening for a while as im really happy with the wheels (although full lock would be good :)
Out of interest i changed the front tyres from 265/35 18's to 245/40's and the 245' actually have a bigger diameter?
Is that right or is it just the different make of tyre?

thanks for all the positive comments guys kinda makes it all worth while knowing that people like some of the work (especially as the mrs doesnt )
Im struggling to find a seat for the drivers side at the money i need so if anyone has a fixed back bucket seat with the 'wings' (cobra evolution style) that they could be persuaded to part with for sensible money then please let me know :)

Havnt got any more parts waiting to be fitted at the moment except to finish the seats and my new OMP steering wheel on but im thinking next on the list will be subframe bushes to finish off the chassis. After that it might be onto the braking side of things (356 minimum FTW )
Also want to get down to some meets now here in the south

What offsets are the rims?

not sure on the offsets but i was told when i bought them they were either 12 or 14 all round and there are 25mm spacers at the back

Got the seats in last night at about 11pm :)
Drivers one went in easy although I'm trying to see if there is a way to mount it any lower but i think im at the limit with the Driftworks super low rails.

well things really didn't go to plan with the alignment (Must point out that this is not TGM's fault as they aligned it to my specs and are a great bunch of guys).
I gave them the Whiteline sport settings which they managed to get done in double quick time but unfortunately i know have some fairly large issues.
Firstly the rear right wheel is roughly 8mm further out than the left for the same camber so i am having to remove some spacers on that side only.
The main problem however is the fronts which are now rubbing like a mad thing but they are rubbing mainly on the bumper and front upper arch area on lock which i am guessing is down to the increased caster.
I am going to have to remove some caster myself but does anyone have ANY IDEA how much shortening the tension rods adjusts the caster ie is is 5mm shorter = roughly 0.5 degree etc.
ANY help on this would be great.
I also now seem to have a grinding noise coming from the right rear which disappears under throttle but is really bad when coasting or braking. Something is definitely rubbing but no idea what, a mate suggested it may be the way the driveshaft is sitting now? Again ANY IDEAS appreciated.
Will probably pop a thread in the tech on these issues also.

Cheers and hopefully will update with some better news soon.

now seem to be getting somewhere with the alignment.
You can read the story in this thread.
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=348809
but the long and short seems to be that the alignment although it gave the desired settings was not done equally on both rears (wildly different lengths of different upper rear arms) The wheels now sit correctly but i will need to get it aligned again correctly as i have messed up all the settings.
This was the gear used when they did it.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000314.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000314.jpg.html)

Since then thanks to the good weather occasionally i have managed to get a couple of other bits done in the evenings.

Got the steering wheel on but still need to sort the horn

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00135.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00135.jpg.html)

Got the rest of the harness mounting bolt plates welded in (jesus my welding sucks which is why you only get nice pics :)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00088.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00088.jpg.html)

And also got my engine damper fitted but it seems to me that it works the wrong way round .... when revving the engine it rocks to the left (as you look at the engine from the front of the car) which will surely mean that damper is only stopping it moving by not being able to extend any further or am i just being an idiot?

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000513.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000513.jpg.html)

Anyway that's it for the moment next stop a rolling road and getting back to the strip and on the road.
I did have a fairly spirited drive home a couple of nights ago when it was nice and dry and it certainly feels like its got some grip, just wished i could have pushed a little without the wheels hitting everything in sight (this was before i sorted it) So will have to give her a good run soon to see if its now better.

Cheers and all comments appreciated.

I have no idea how it passed scrutineering and no idea how it stayed dry but it did on both counts.
And the best bit
IT DIDNT GO BANG
160K and only stage one but she flew so was well chuffed. Had a bit of overspill with power steering fluid (don't think i boiled it but might have been overfilled) and found out that my oil cap leaks:annoyed: so will be on the hunt for a Nismo one. Also had low oil pressure on idle after the run but i think was due to not having topped it up before going (as i said i wasn't planning on going out) but other than that i had no problems at all and had a great day to boot.

More updates and on a pretty positive note.
Had the alignment checked again by Jez and it wasn't too bad but still have some minor niggles with the rear right wheel but managed to get around it to a degree.
Also managed to get my extinguisher fitted and battery cut off switch although i have not done the external side of things yet.

Also got round to fitting my front lower brace

I don't have any pull leads long enough to do the external cut offs for the battery and fire so if anyone knows anywhere to get them i could do with knowing.
Cheers

Absolutely chuffed to bits with this, the car is only stage one with a front mount so this is about 25bhp up on the expected figure.

The AFR is a little high at the top end but rang Jez and he said it would be fine as long as i didn't run any more boost.

Well no updates on this for a while now due to not much being done as i just moved house but finally got some time to work on it this weekend.
Main job was to fit this little lot.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00166.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00166.jpg.html)

Ksport 356mm 8 pot fronts :D

Got the old stuff with no problems and as you can see below theres a tiny bit of difference between the old and new discs:eek:

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00285.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00285.jpg.html)

Any way they went on easily enough with the only problem being trying to remove one of my ultralite wheel nuts which had snapped. Only way we could get it out was to chain drill round the edge which did cause a bit of damage to the wheel but nothing too bad (theres four good studs on it.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00225.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00225.jpg.html)

Don't think the studs too re-usable tho.

Any way replaced this stud and another which had a bit of a nasty thread on it and then it was on with the new stuff.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00335.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00335.jpg.html)

Whilst i was on the brakes i removed the ABS pump and made up the new lines and also fitted my lineloc.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00364.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG00364.jpg.html)

I need to tidy up some wiring and hose runs around the back of the engine now.
Obviously havn't done any hard braking yet as I'm running them in but WOW:eek: the brakes feel astonishing even under light braking. There is so much bite and such good feel. It feels like you hardly need any pressure on the pedal to dramatically reduce the speed. Overall I'm massively happy with the results. Just cant wait to get them run in and get it on track again.
Did come across one problem which i have explained in this thread and is causing me a few headaches and is causing the car to run lean.
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=361659
So if anyone has any ideas on this it would be much appreciated.
Apart from that i think that's it.
Next job will be dash out for flocking and roll cage in along with some tidying of wiring behind the dash. Just need to find some more cash :wack:

Couple more things ticked off the list today
Resprayed the front window surround trims in satin black

Been quiet on this now for a while as i have been collecting parts in readiness to start doing some proper work on the engine. So far i have power FC d-jetro, Nismo 740's, and a rather huge HKS 3037 turbo set up all ready to go on. Apart from some general tidying up the only things that have been done are to get it professionally detailed (thanks to Kelly @ KDS) and also had the wheels refurbed in a custom mix paint usually seen on Porsche wheels (done at Lepsons in Gillingham and look superb i think)
Also managed to get my Driftworks front and rear strut braces fitted (I'm such a carbon junkie)

Next update should hopefully have a lot more interesting stuff as we start to get on with making some power but for now i will leave you with a couple of pics i took with my new Cam (thanks Big D). Any advice or comments on the pics would be appreciated as i think i could get into this whole photography thing.

I think they should give the clean but slightly more aggressive look im after especially in conjunction with the rear spats that i have had lying around for ages.

Another long weekend spent in the workshop resulted in me getting a lot of the bits that have been lying around or just arrived fitted. First up was my new HKS3037R kit and Power FC D-Jetro.

Big thanks to the all involved in getting everything done (Big Chris a star as always ably assisted by 'Col and Mark (who popped in to say hi and ended up staying all day to help out))

The whole turbo fit went pretty well although the intercooler piping did cause a few alignment problems but nothing that a die grinder and airsaw couldnt fix.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0009-4.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0009-4.jpg.html)

Fitting the Power FC was fairly easy once the inlet was off this is where i fitted the sensor as i seemed to remember reading that it should be as near to the throttle body as possible.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0012-1.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0012-1.jpg.html)

Also in there are some Nismo 740 injectors so hopefully i should be ok for fuelling now.

Had to move my catch tank for the filter to fit but no big problem and this is the finished result.

Also had a chance to fit my rear spats and JDM option skirts which had just been painted. First time i have ever fitted skirts and come to the conclusion that i am shockingly bad at anything bodywork related (yes even gluing skirts in place) I put way too much sikaflex on the first ones and as a result they didnt sit very flush so i was so nervous about the second i may have not out enough on but anyway this is what they look like fitted.

Why didn't you just dry fit the skirts?? Mine are dry fitted and the cars has done over 150mph (on my private track) and they were fine.

they didnt fit perfectly as i have wider front wings and bonded on 50mm wider overfenders so some re fitting was necessary to get them to sit reasonably flat. I dont think i will be wanting to change them any time soon so not too bothered about getting them off just more concerned with getting them fitted well

:thumbs:OK its fairly RAPID:thumbs::thumbs:
All went OK with Jez today and the only problem we encountered was that above actuator pressure (0.8 bar) we were getting monster compressor surge. Jez said that this was due to the head and cams being standard and the turbo basically being to big :wack: . Not too bothered though as even at 0.8 bar it is most definately quicker than it was running 1 bar on the standard turbo with noticably less spool up time between gear changes. Its a little laggier than it was which is to be expected but as the car is used mainly for track and drag work its not too much of a problem and will hopefuuly be better when the engine is built and flows better. Currently get full boost at around 4000rpm but boy does it come on strong. Engine had no det even when we breifly tried it at 1.2 BAR so thats all good. Just need to start collecting the bits for the engine build now. Will most likely be going for 260deg pro cams with fully built bottom end when finances allow.

Cant wait until next year to get it back up the pod and try and get into the 12's although i think traction may be my biggest enemy now.

M.D.
11-11-2008, 16:37
thats really odd about the surge, i had a t70 on a basically standard bar a slightly neatened up head and an exhaust cam in the inlet ca18det, so nothing really yet i had no surge at all. and your turbo is a lot smaller than a t70.

gotta say im loving the look of your car mate, you must be well stoked with it :)

redlinezak
11-11-2008, 16:42
Dunno what a T70 is but yeah it sounds a lot bigger than mine lol . Jex did suggest that just cams may sort the problem and that the problem lay squarely with the head or cams but i tfigure i wmay just as well wait until i have all the bits i need for the full build. What boost were you running with the T70? And thanks for the comments about the car, hopefuuly it will be a dry day tomorrow and i can give it a clean so i will put some pics up of it with the new skirts n stuff as i think they really finish it off.

Yeah i think the brakes are my favorite part of the whole car and they work amazingly, proper nose on windscreen stuff. Just need to sort the rears out now. Would like to go K-sport rears but whatever i fit MUST fit under 16" rims for drag work. The smallest K-sport rear kit is currently 330mm and i would still need to sort a handbrake system for MOT.

Cheers for the comments

RE surge:

Ported shroud compressor housing will help a lot. HKS did this on the GT3037S

redlinezak
12-11-2008, 12:15
is that something i would be able to get from an HKS dealer? Have spoken to stimpy and he think s that a stronger spring may help also. If HKS did the ported shroud on the 3037S then there must be some out there i guess as that is the exact kit i have. Gave it a run up the road today to checxk it wasnt anything to do with the EBC but it dooesnt appear to be as i can run the EBC at .85 bar and no surge so it is definately related to pressure.

Actual_Ben_Taylor
12-11-2008, 13:42
You should be able to get a housing from Turbo Dynamics.

HKS only offered the ported shroud on the GT3037S, which was only available with 52 and 56 trim compressor wheels.

Its going to depend which trim compressor wheel you have (48, 52 or 56 trim), but they should be able to get you something to fit. Just going to need the part numbers off the turbo to determine exactly what it is :)

The more boost you run, and the earlier in the revs you get boost are going to increase the chances of surge; your also more likely to get it in higher gears due to the turbo spooling harder/sooner due to the extra load.

Running 1bar on Chop Suey T70 isn't going to give any surge, 2 bar most likely would though.

redlinezak
12-11-2008, 13:55
Chop Suey lol
I dont think its going to be a big problem as i cant realistically run too much more anyway on a standard block and box although it would be nice to try n cure the problem for when the moment takes me.

I think it might. The rear tyres are pretty shot so need some new 888's and on the look out for some drag radials for strip work. At the moment running 0.8 bar it will happily spin up in 2nd when it comes on boost if im heavy footed. In the wet i think the first 3 gear maybe 4 will be useless at WOT but that's totally down to the tyres.

i think to be honnest thats because your trying to use r888s in the wet, i have 350bhp and dont get any wheelspin in the wet at all in 3rd and barely any in second really, and i have well used continentals on the rear at the moment,

are you sure you havent gone a little TOO wide with the wheels, as that can make grip worse too.

i never get any wheelspin in second in the dry unless i slip the clutch. never did with the CA either which was much more savage power delivery than the RB is even tho it had a similar amount of power

no fights on my thread you 2:wack: im sure both of your torques are very nice :D Seriously though i am fairly certain the rears are shot as they were on the wheels when i bought them third hand and have come over on a skyline from japan. They are also badly grained on the outer edge so i think they have seen a fairly hard life

M.D.
13-11-2008, 09:06

still faster than my CA was with the same BHP  anyway lol,

ive heard that those tyres can go off, especially if they have had a hard life, will you be getting another set or are you going to get more road going tyres. i see you were looking at getting spare wheels for the rear on drag days, i would definately recomend that as it gets expensive otherwise on tyres

redlinezak
14-11-2008, 16:59
I will look to get some 888's on the rear as the current one are bridgestone versions and yes they are very 'gone off' lol. I want to get some R32 GTR rims and Drag tyres for strip but as the car doesnt get used much i will keep the 888's on it as road and track tyres.

Trying to do some reading up on comressor surge but only things i can find are basically about pigeoning and nothing really that explains why it happens on WOT as it is doing on mine. I think its gonna be fairly expensive to cure anyway whichever way i do it so i think i will just live with it until i rebuild the engine at which time i will do some head work and cams which will hopefully sort it out. Would love to try and find a ported housing though but chances of finding one cheap are slim to none i guess. Anyone know if its possible to port the original housing?

Went down to SRR day last weekend. Great day with some lovely cars and was nice to see Jez's monster on the rollers. Mine made 309hp but was limited to running just 0.75bar due to the surge which was a shame as there is obviously plenty more to come. Managed to source a new head with 3 angle seats etc from Squares (Cheers mate) so after Christmas im going to get some 270 procams and tomei lifters in with the new head. Also might have sourced a built bottom end so hopefully by mid next year i could be touching 450??

Going to start doing some much needed wiring tidying whilst the cars not being used until next year. Going to take the dash out and put a couple of new holes in the bulkhead to run wiring through and also tidy up some of the rats nest in the center console. Also hopefully going to make a new centre console panel to better fit all the electronics and cutoffs etc. Whilst the dash is out I'm going to flock it as i love the look of a flocked dash.
Will keep you updated with progress but until next year not going to be anything major going on.

All comments are welcome as usual

to be honest the money kind of ran out for a while so not a lot has happened. I have flocked the dash and fitted the BGW (drag styleee) and thats about it for the moment. I have been playing around with some different setups for drag racing and im now down to a 13.1 but i think the car has a 12 second run in it.
When the money situation improves a little i will concentrate on the head forst to enable me to run some proper boost (cams springs etc) and then its onto the block.
I will try and get a couple of pics up of the dash and wing shortly.

Also took the wheels off and gave them a proper clean and polish to remove the pitting and marking.

These came up really well so much happier as they looked a bit sorry for themselves.

29-03-2009, 07:29
Yeah im happy with the dash although i wouldnt mind having a go at it with a proper flocking machine instead of just using the powder and paint that i did this time.

For the wheels all i used was autosol and then gave them a coat of rimwax. If the pitting is deeper then you can use a fine grit wet n dry and then autosol after.

Well hopefully i will have some new pics and a newly fitted engine by next week. Got hold of a fully built forged engine which was running 500+ so going to fit it this weekend. I dont think i will be able to run it at high boost tho due to gearbox limitations but iat least i will be in a position to have the power when i sort the box. I will probably need it remapped when funds allow also as this engine has poncams and a greddy plenum fitted but hopefully i can still run it on the old map for now as funds are tight. I will be keeping a close eye on the AFR and knock just to be sure.

Will update with piccies next week but its getting there

did you ever find out what causes compressor surge or how to cure it as i get it now with my new turbo :(

redlinezak
21-04-2009, 12:53
No i didnt and it still remains a mystery. Spoke to Jez and he couldnt understand it either.
I did manage to make it slightly better by plumbing the ext gate correctly using both nipples rather than one and the comp housing is at turbo dynamics as we speak hopefully getting ported to see if that helps.

redlinezak
21-04-2009, 12:54
Im hoping that the new engine with decent cams will cure the problem as the best guess so far is that the turbo is flowing too much air for the head to handle so the cams should sort that fingers crossed

All parts fitted and swapped over the the new lump

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0018-3.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0018-3.jpg.html)

And all in place

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0021.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0021.jpg.html)

So at this point it was all going well. Until that is we put some coolant in it. It seems that the thread on the turbo coolant feed had been knackered on the new block which meant that the banjo bolt wasn't long enough to bit into the block correctly when it had 2 copper washers fitted. In the end and due to the fact that i had no other choices and really needed to get the car home i decided to grind down the banjo to give it more bite in the head. This did actually work but the problem was now that i had not ground it down perfectly flat so although it now could be tightened into the block it wouldn't seal correctly and continued to wee itself at the mere mention of coolant. In the end we had to replace the copper washers with rubber ones which seems to be working OK at the moment.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0030.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0030.jpg.html)

Not sure how long this will hold but until i can find a standard banjo bolt with a longer thread it will have to do.

In other news.....
Unfortunately turbo dynamics couldn't port the compressor housing due to the fact that there is not enough meat on the oulet so that has had to go back on as it was before.

On the (late) run home the car felt good even though i was only running at actuator pressure until the mapping. It seemed more responsive and sharper which maybe down to the cams or plenum? Also for some reason the gearbox feels better although i can really explain this other then the fact that we changed the oil????

Slightly more vibration in the cabin which im guessing is due to the cusco engine mounts.

Just waiting now until i can get the car to Jez for mapping and then we will see if the Surge is still present.

Need to start stocking up on boxes now.

All comments much appreciated.

Thanks

aye freezer and a bit of copper grease seems to be std tack with it. Another route is a long bolt through your bushes two big nuts and washers on either end then wind on the pressure slowly to pull into position.

Top work mate, good to see regular updates from this and im certainly getting bigger idea's whilst doing mine! haha.
Agreed with the freezer idea for the bushing, loads of grease and a good wack with a mallet and a bit of wood will ease them in! good luck!

Well the compressor surge saga continues. I still have it and in some respects it seems more prominent than it was before the engine swap. If anyone has any ideas on this please see this thread and post your suggestions.

Another route is a long bolt through your bushes two big nuts and washers on either end then wind on the pressure slowly to pull into position.

I've done this twice to re-bush my s14a and my old civic. I would say it the best method on a budget, i bought a long threaded rod and some nuts for lest than a fiver and they were perfect.

Edit: Nice work on this project, keep it up  Thought about stitch welding or bracing the subframe while it off?

really like this car and want a couple bits off it for my future 200. I was wondering if you had any more pics of the BGW and what make it is/where di you get it from? Also are the rear lights just ebay wonders that have been tinted black? Did you tint them yourself because it looks really tidy, i tinted the indicators on my starlet and it just came out a bit pants.

Good work on the car anyways, top job.

redlinezak
05-05-2009, 12:05
The rear wing i bought second hand from on here i think but it is apparently a Choket one. I will try and find a link to it.
The lights came already tinted but yes they are ebay. I love the lightls themselves but not 100% keen on the center panel but i much prefer them over standard.

Cheers

yeh same, the centre panel is a bit dubious but i like the end parts. It wouldnt be so bad if the reverse lights in the middle didnt like like humungous spot lights. Cheers for the heads up on the spoiler, i will try and look too.

OK bit of a major update time as i have been a bit lazy with updating.

Couple of little thing completed. Hard wired the fuel pump which I'm sure has stabilised the voltage at higher RPM.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0029.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0029.jpg.html)

Melted my ignition amp but somehow it still running.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0006-6.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG0006-6.jpg.html)

Whilst i was sorting this out i took the opportunity to strip that part of the loom and cut out all the now unused wires that used to go to the ABS. (weight saving and tidier :) )

Also tidied up some of my vacuum hosing and made sure that all pressure sensors were being taken from the same line.

Then after chatting to a few people most notably Steve Sadler i decided to have another go at mapping and getting rid of the surge. Steve had some good theory's on this so i thought it was worth a go and coupled with the cams hopefully it wouldn't be a problem.

The result..........................................

To say I'm chuffed to bits is an understatement. The car feels amazing and although it takes a bit of time for the turbo to spin up once it is then its a bit of a missile. There is also zero lag between gear changes which is nice.
Big thanks to Steve ( i didn't mind waiting really mate honest ).

I think i will probably still change the housing for a ported one when i can afford it just to eliminate any chances of surge as i think there may still be the slightest hint of it on part throttle.

The next limiting factor will be the turbo and the fuel system but for now i am happy with the power so i can concentrate on other things.

Gearbox i don't think is quite so happy about it though as it has developed a slight rattle already when gently coming off and on power so this will most likely be next on the list.

Next round of things to do will be:

GEARBOX GEARBOX GEARBOX - most likely a RB25 box.
Engine out at the end of the nice weather and tidy up and spray the engine bay (possibly a few more shiny bits too)
Strip of all the hand painted interior paint and paint that properly.
Get myself a Roll cage.
Possible change of colour for next year...... not decided yet but i have an idea about colour :)

Engine wise i think the next step will be a complete new fuel system including swirl pot and extra pump, bigger top feed injectors and rail and a fuel pressure regulator.
When thats done it may be time for a bigger turbo (possibly GT35) but all thats a long way in the distance. As i say i am really happy with it now so for the time being the engine can be considered finished

the graphs show full boost about 4500 but it doesnt feel that bad on the road. I dont think it could ever be called lazy power though but in general im either cruising 80 or nailing it. I think if i wanted a wider power spread i would go down to a 3071 but as its primarily used for drag racing with some track work im not too fussed. To be honest once it starts making decent boost at around 3500 the revs rise so quickly that full boost is but a mere moment away lol.

Thanks for the comments mate and i guess i could let him off for sitting there i do work him hard on the car :)
Regards the wheels to be honest i have thought about changing them as the fitment on the front is preventing me running as much castor as i would like but then again i do Really Really like them and i dont know if i would something else as unique and light.
The dash wouldnt be too much to do (maybe £100 ish but i would need to check) but when you get up close to it you can see some minor defects. I would really like to get a proper electrostatic flocking machine and do them properly.

OK minor problem but couldnt have come at a worse time.
I noticed on the way home from mapping thet the Power FC was reading about 0.35 bar below everything else. Traced this to the T piece i used to connect the Power FC MAP sensor having a restrictor in it. Easy fix - replaced the T and all ok except that now i have lost what feels like about 220 BHP lol. After asking around i now know that on a Power FC D-Jetro the entire fuel and ign mao is controlled by the MAP sensor so the car is now running very retarded and massively rich. I put the old T piece back on but somehow between removing it and replacing it whatever was causing the restriction has gone so the car is still not running correctly.
Im pretty sure the only solution is a minor remap. (absolutely gutted as i was supposed to be off to Llandow this weekend and Japshow the following)

12.05 @ 118mph.

60ft was terrible at 2.1secs so plenty to be saved there with a full launch so hopefully the elevens are not too far away.

Thanks all
Suspension is Apex Gen 1's but as i wasnt launching too hard it wasnt a problem although i think softer suspension may be required when i start gunning it although times will probably be lower as i will push too hard lol.

Would be an even better run with that nitrous kit of yours Damo ;)

It's for sale if you want it ;-)

you could have used it. its sitting in the back of my car still :wack:

Another couple more bits to tick off the list.
Fitted my cat replacement silencer at the weekend which I'm sure would have done a very good job of quieting the car down if it wasn't for the 4" Gash in the flexi section of my downpipe (pics to follow). Result ...my car sounds somewhat comparable to Massey Ferguson tractor. So now need to get that sorted before the car can be driven.

Also managed to finally fit my solid diff and subframe bushes to my refurbed subframe and get that on.

The car feels much more planted at the rear now and not as crashy however there is one MAJOR downside in that the bangs and crashes and knocks from the driveline shunt is massive. I think the center bearing has gone on the prop and it feels as though the subframe has fallen off every time i change gear. I'm actually concerned that something is lose but we had the car on the ramp and we were fairly abruptly up and down on the clutch causing much banging but there was nothing moving underneath at all.
Can anyone clarify if they have done this to their car did they have similar results?

Also got my braided brake lines fitted thanks to HEL performance. Just need to replace the rear rubber lines and that's every brake line on the car braided (no MOT fails there from now on). Also fitted my Z32 M/Cyl that i have had lying around for ages. If anyone has the wiring plug for the cylinder it would be much appreciated as i don't have one.

Looking at getting a one piece prop when i get my RB25 box fitted now so if anyone has any good contacts then pass them my way cheers.
Also need someone local to weld a new flexi section on when i get it as my welding leaves a great deal to be desired so any help much appreciated.

Hi mate, have you tried contacting agricultural engineers regarding a one piece prop? They can easily make one up and should only cost around £50-100.
Oh and nice subframe? Iv just removed mine and will be doing the same shortly.

I will be using a os giken twin plate with an RB box with polo mod and a one piece prop. Im not sure which diff i will be using yet, havent got the point of speccing one yet.
Also like your braided hoses, so i will be doing the same now haha!

Im looking forward to seeing your car when its done mate as it sounds like it could be quite a similar spec to mine except being built all at once rather than in stages. I would have loved to do that on my car but time and money prevented that. If you get any good quotes for the one piece prop then could you let me know and maybe we can do a deal for getting 2 made up at the same time.

To be honest i never meant to go anywhere near this stage mate, its just kind of snowballed into buying one part and then "oh, i might aswell just get that to go with it" and now its a case of trying to get everything i need so i can just fit it all at once.

I will see what i can find out about the one piece props for you mate. I live in the middle of nowhere so there is plenty of farms etc i can ask about it. The reason i happen to know about it, is because one of my old mates a few years ago, got it done and it only cost him £50 in total! But i would imagine it may be alittle more now.

I will go do some investigating and see what i can come up with and get back to you mate.
You have given me alot of inspiration. Once i get a few more parts then i will start a project thread and you can see all the idea's i have stolen from you and ex-ctr!!lol.

As i have no money to spend on the car i thought i would keep myself busy and have a go at polishing my spare rocker cover.

Nissan Logo ground off with belt sander.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/P7185131.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/P7185131.jpg.html)

And both logos gone.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/P7185143.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/P7185143.jpg.html)

There was a fair bit of pitting underneath the logos.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/P7185142.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/P7185142.jpg.html)

I got rid of as much as i could but i didn't want to go too deep into the metal. I think the casting errors were all the way through as i kept sanding and more kept appearing.

I removed the casting marks from round the edge.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000529.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000529.jpg.html)

Sanded down to 1000grit now.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000231.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG000231.jpg.html)

And polished up

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t33/redlinezak/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG001117.jpg (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/redlinezak/media/Nissan%20200SX/CIMG001117.jpg.html)

I pretty much used every thing i could for different parts but still had trouble getting into some of the harder to reach places. If it rotated or vibrated then it got used.
I might be able to get it slightly better but for now i was fairly happy with the result. Just need to get round to putting it on.

Well update time again and this time not quite so good news but not the end of the world. On the way to USC just 8 miles from work i went to accelerate (fairly briskly) in 3rd and BANG the box blew.
A 3 hour wait later and 2 AA trucks (why they dont just listen that it needs a low loader i dont know) i was back at work and heading up to Santa Pod in a Camper.
Not sure exactly what part has snapped but it makes a hell of a racket without the clutch in but there is drive of some sort in 1st but only moves a few feet and then kinda seizes up and then breaks itself loose again and moves a little further.
Dropping the engine and box out this sunday so might have a quick investigate to see what blew but basically im going to take the car off the road now until next year to do some more work including painting the bay and hopefully fitting lots more go faster parts as well as an RB25 box.
I have also got another Auto diff and R32 skyline diff which im going to combine and replace my standard one.
I have started stockpiling the new bits (small pile at the moment) and so far have a KU engineering inlet but looks like its going to need a fair bit of work with piping etc.
If anyone has fitted one of these type inlets then any advice on what exactly needs modifying would be appreciated.
Will continue to get pics up of the work.

Cheers

Speak to POLO

he does plenty of these RB25DET conversions for fellow folk and runs one on his own 460hp SR when I was last tuning it

He has a different diff though, not sure of the ratios but damn, it felt nice!

Give him a bell and im sure he can fill you in on all the bits you need for your conversion

So now its a case of stripping everything out of the engine bay and spraying it up. Also i have an oil leak which seems to be coming from the either the head gasket or at the top of the timing chain cover gasket. Either way i think this may require head removal which i have never done before so this is my main worry at the moment.

yeah check out my for sale thread if your interested in the greddy mate.
Do i need to remove cams etc to get the head off or does it just unbolt complete? Also will i need new head studs and gasket when refitting?

Also what turbo are you going to be running. I have been looking at holset but dont know whether a holset hx40 is going to be as good as a GT35?

Aj82
12-08-2009, 09:21
Hi mate- what forsale thread? You know i want it!
Yes you need to remove the cams but its easy to do that mate.
As for headstuds, nissan say you can re-use them if they are a certain length (exact is in the manual) but to be honest i would get a set of ARP headstuds to be safe or apex do some aswell i think.
Always advisable to fit a new gasket aswell mate, better safe than sorry.

I have a 7blade Holset HX35 which i have heard good things about, so think im going to stick with it. If it blows up then i could still buy a second one and still be under what it would cost for the Garrett equivlent!
