I thought Id post my own little project up, so here goes...

Firstly, I bought this white 94' facelift s13, completly standard with the plan of modifiy it as I go, turning it into a drifty beast, and pretty much making it as unpractible as possible:thumbs:. Also I am planning on doing this as cheaply as possible by buying second hand as much as possible.

As I bought it.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/2007_0908september070122.jpg

but it looked completly gay as standard and so I bought some Apex coilovers off the sxoc forum and got about winding the car as low as possible. These are the drift/race set coilovers so rather hard:wack:

To This

However the cambers pretty bad at the rear so am gonna have to address this soon, but handles loads better and looks cooler too. Its rather low though- the exhaust caught on a catseye when i crossed the middle of the road. Gonna cut the rear towing eye off and tuck the exhaust up more i think!

I then took the rear seats and carpet out to strip it out a bit

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/2007_0828august070009.jpg

Next up I bought a exhaust system off ebay, second hand japspeed jobbie, cat back though so will get a decat front pipe at a later stage.

And the new one

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/2007_0826august070040.jpg

The Only problem was the rear towing eye gets in the way of the back box, so you cant tuck it up too much. But it kept banging the towing eye so in the end i cut it off and tucked the exhaust right up out the way which is a lot better.
As you can see from this pic, the back box butts right up against the towing eye:rolleyes:

I thought id better change the cambelt as I had no reciept for the work, but had been told it had been done by the previos owner a couple k's ago.

Then I heard a nasty rattle, thinking the worst I limped home a mile and parked up. It sat there for a week, me presuming if was the big end rattle. Until I started it up again, then i noticed it was a top end rattle, sounded like a tapping right underneath the cam cover. So then my plan was to service the hydraulic lifters. I did this and then on torque up a camshaft bracket the bolt snapped off inside the head! dam. Right down inside. So I tryed drilling a hole for my stud extractor to go in but the bolt had snapped off at a angle making it impossible for me to drill straight down. Eventually I did and got a stud extractor in, only that wound itself in, and then cracked the head! Doh. So thats when I thought sod it, engine out and RB conversion starts here.

Im planning on an RB25, still looking for a one at the moment though! Wish I could afford a rb26, can barely afford a 25! Yeh Im gonna have to see to that camber! Im cleaning up the engine bay at the moment, will post some more pics in a bit. Sam

Next up was to prep the engine bay and clean it while its engineless. I sanded&sanded and rubbed all the rust down night after night when I got home from work. My dremel also proved an excellent tool, very very useful. Any rusty bits remaining where treated with some anti-rust hammerite gel which you leave on and it eats at the rust. Repeated this a couple times until it was all out. Rubbed back all the surface rust which reappeared back down to the metal, then finally painted these areas with hammerite black and white paint. I was pleased with the result.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0432.jpg

All that green stuff is the hammerite gel stuff. Seemed like good stuff. Finally i started painting it. The Suspension turrets were nicely rusted too so they had the same treatment as did the battery tray. I took off the standard intercooler and under that was rusty too. So that got done aswell.

Thats all for now. I've just got my rb mounts that I bought from the states from ruckusracing on ebay. Will put some pics up. I payed £136 (plus £28 customs duty!!!) delivered i think and hopefully should slot the engine in nicely. All i need now is an engine!

Good luck, seems like you've got a pretty nice, solid base for the project.
Gonna be keeping an eye on this one.

...and hopefully should slot the engine in nicely...

just checked the mounts out, you seen the disclaimer on the ad?

**Due to the larger size of the RB series Bellhousing and its starter placement some massaging of the firewall/trans tunnel maybe needed.**

Didnt have much time today to work on the car, but thought Id whip off the spoiler to see how much welding was gonna need doing. But to my complete suprise the bootlid was in good shape! Just surface rust around the mounting holes to be rubbed down!

weld some plates under the holes and filler over the top. easy

samcourtney86
04-02-2008, 20:34
How the hell do you get a welder up under the boot skin on the underside of the boot?

armracing
04-02-2008, 20:46
Your S13 reminds me of my old one so much

What u do with the boot is have two of you. Cut some plates out of sheet metal for your holes. Then get your mate with a heat proof glove etc to push and hold the plate up in the boot while u weld on top where the hole and sheet metal meet you only really need to tack it, but u can fill up the excess with weld then gride and smooth down to orignal boot level. Be careful not to go to crazy with the heat from the welder as u can distort the orignal boot metal then u will need to hammer metal down and fill if it gets too distorted.

I tacked and slightly built it up with weld then gound down excess weld extra smoothed down and a light film of filler across and sanded down level. Primed and sprayed. Stand back looks the dogs nuts

What i did took the lower metal seal out of the rear window where it meets the boot and sprayed right up to the window etc then re-fitted seal etc so looks all neat :)

Hope that helps you out

Ol'_200sx_thing
04-02-2008, 21:46
or cut out exact plates to fit the holes and weld them in flush, then a grind down and slight skim of filler....... et voila ;)

potts85
04-02-2008, 21:56
i placed metal plates under the boot lid and welded from the top of it then a skim of filler over the top

05-02-2008, 19:19
only tack weld the plates on or it will warp like hell. Or you could firbe glass from the bottom and fill

samcourtney86
05-02-2008, 20:23
Thanks for the help, I dont have a welder nor any real experience in welding yet, so was think the fibreglass route as said about. Could I not stick a 2p coin from underneath up against the hole with some sealent, then fibreglass and fill the hole, then rub back and paint? Im sure i've seen this done before??? Or is that a sh*te idea!

samcourtney86
17-02-2008, 19:52
Well, thanks to Paul at Japimportsuk I now have a nice rb25det and gearbox with only 30k on! I went and picked that up saturday from there workshop in Devon, and have since been just cleaning bits up. I got a couple days off this week so will crack on and get some jobs done.

Heres the beast

Im thinking im gonna change the cambelt, are the brand named ones worth the extra money or are nissan belts just as good?

Also since my last update me and a friend fitted some subframe locking collars, which i thought was going to be a nightmare of a job, but all went well thank god thanks to some plus-gas and wd40.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0530.jpg

Next up I bought some engine mounts for fitting the rb engine into the s13 chassis from ruckus racing in the states, which cost me £136 delivered. So its going to be interesting to see how well these are gonna fit.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0558.jpg

Next on the shopping list is some new engine mounts and gearbox mount. Also im going to need a skyline gts downpipe, an intercooler, radiator, cooling fans and a custom propshaft. Then theres the re-wiring:censored:

And a couple other pics taken....

you should be able to use the original ca prop

i got a simalar mounting kit and it enables you to use the prop without any mods done to it

well my kit did anyway

samcourtney86
17-02-2008, 20:04
Doesnt the skyline gearbox need a different yolk on the end of the prop? Sam

Ol'_200sx_thing
17-02-2008, 20:07
With the RB25 you cant use the CA prop

But if you look on ebay you should get one kinda quick, ive seen a few go for sale

Getting the 2 splice together should cost circa 100 quid mate

ANd there are loads of peeps on here that have done the swap, so advice is always available :Plug:

samcourtney86

Ah ok, thanks. Looking at other threads for this conversion, where do I get the resistor thingy I need for the revcounter to work? Im not great with electronics!! Thanks, Sam

Ol'_200sx_thing
18-02-2008, 08:42
you can get any 10k ohm resistor and solder it in place. If your not good with electronics i recommend you get Buffy to do your wiring, the guy has done it for a few guys so far

samcourtney86
27-02-2008, 20:25
Well, over the last couple weeks i've found theres more to fitting a manual gearbox to an originally auto engine than i thought. First up I need different flywheel bolts, longer ones as the auto flywheels alot thinner. Then theres the dam spigot bearing! Theres a silly auto box adaptor bearing thingy jammed in the crank end so after days of bu*ggering about, i finally managed to carefully grind it out with my dremel. Then bent it buckeled it with a hammer and yanked it out with some pliers. Also i need a "manual" gearbox to engine bracket thingy.

The original bearing in there - for a auto gearbox
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0574.jpg

After I ground and buckeled it
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0595.jpg

Then heres the new spigot bearing for a manual box, ready to be fitted
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0597.jpg

I've also given the engine a quick tidy up, sprayed the heatshields silver again, as they where rather discoloured. Once the engines in and I've got a spare 5 minutes I'll clean it all up nice and get the metal polish out. Also I'll get the cam covers painted. I cant decide what colour to go, classic red? Always looks good but a bit boring? May go for something a bit different.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0566.jpg

I removed the s13 loom too, and layed it up against the rb loom, looks scary. Hopefully get my head around the wiring though, some very useful guys on here:thumbs:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0585.jpg

This weeks purchases have been, a new cambelt, power steering belt, alternator belt and a spigot bearing- came to about £75 from nissan.

I got some Apex engine and transmission mounts also.

Next up I looking at clutches, nobody seems to have these in stock, everytime I find one I want, its out of stock. Was looking at either a rps or ACT clutch. Was planning to spend £300ish, so if anyone has any suggestions???

still on the shopping list, I gotta get a skyline downpipe, prop made up, and a air filter. ooh and a walbro pump. Slowly getting there:wack:

Sam:thumbs:

samcourtney86
09-03-2008, 16:48
Well, have spent alot lot of time doing lot a lot really. Im stuck awaiting parts, and cant do alot until they arrive. I need longer flywheel bolts as I have short ones which where for the auto gearbox. Also I need the backplate/guard thingy for the manual gearbox. Anyway, I did change all the belts, not that they look very worn but its better to be safe than sorry.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0600.jpg

And some gayboy changing the belts!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0604.jpg

Also painted up a couple brackets here and there while I was at it.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0610.jpg

I finally managed to get hold of a clutch, I got a exedy single plate from Abbey Motorsport for £293, its a R32 GTR one but am assured its a great clutch and will bolt straight to the rb25det. Also I bought a RB25 fuel filter for £6 and a metal steering bush off someone on here, so fitted that this weekend but no pics! I also ordered up a big front mounted intercooler and all the pipe work, plus a 52mm alloy rad will silicon hoses from the friendly guy at www.autoextreme.co.uk for £340 delivered so cant wait for that to arrive! Sam

samcourtney86
23-03-2008, 20:10
Well, i got my nice alloy rad, looks good, but its all packaged up so dont want to get it out yet, so sorry no pics! Same with the intercooler- all bubble wrapped and boxed up tight!

Well lately, i've fitted my exedy clutch, and then the gearbox. For some reason I just couldnt get the gearbox on for ages!! I must have took the clutch of 3 or 4 times and realigned it before it finally slip on, phew! Dam things get heavy after a days jiggling!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/a1c75555.jpg

I've also fitted some new fuel line and fuel filter. I wiggled the rb loom into the s13 today, aswell as fitting the custom mounts up ready.

I was well chuffed, got a walbro from the states, delivered for £50, (i asked the seller to mark it as "gift" and value it at "$20" which he did) and it only took a week to get here! Reccomend him here...http://stores.ebay.com/partusa1

spot on, i just gotta fit it now, and I started oiling the mega rusty fuel pump bolts

I'm liking this, another good project to follow...

Looks a very clean shell, and i must say i'm warming to S13's more and more.... (Exclude the PS13 out of that tho, thats my favorite of all 200's)

samcourtney86
30-03-2008, 20:33
Update time, well first up i managed to fit my walbro fuel pump alright, easier than I thought. The nuts came off ok so i whipped it out the fuel tank, and disconnected the fuel hoses so I could take it away.
I find plus-gas is a god send, really really good stuff for rusty stubborn nuts!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/d2333591.jpg

Heres a pic of the original pump (forgot to take one of the new one)
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0644.jpg

I just unsoldered the live and earth wires from the top of the pump bracket then removed the pump, and resoldered the new wires back on, slapped the pump back on and bobs your uncle- back in the tank.

Anyway onto the exciting stuff, finally started fitting the engine. Im using ruckus-racing cheapo relocating mounts for the rb engines, with apex ca18det engine mounts and a gearbox mount. I bolted the the engine side brackets to the engine, then the apex mounts to these, then the reloacting mounts to these, as then you can (in theory) slide the whole lot onto the subframe from the front (rather than lifting and dropping the engine into/onto the mounts, which is bloody hard with little space to play with).

So with the engine on the crane, nice and even, I tied a bit of rope around the gearbox to control the angle to drop it in. I found you need quite a steep angle, but i'll get onto that later.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0667.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0666.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0645.jpg

Next i just about remembered to get the engine number before fitting it.
Then a rough trial fit to see where to beat the firewall in, where the starter motor bulge is on the rb25 gearbox.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0652.jpg

followed by a beating...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0655.jpg

Now one of the main clearance issues was this flippin abs metal bracket, which is the vertical metal bit smack in the middle of this pic
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0654.jpg

This was one tough mofo, I had to heat it red hot with a blow torch and hit it with a hammer, took be about 30mins to move it just a little, its made so it doesnt bend! Made too well I think. Anyway with that bent a little, I went and started getting the engine into position...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0649.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0653.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0671.jpg

I found that if you pump the transmission up and down, up and down with a jack it wobble it in more and more, which was good. The engine just and just gets down in the engine bay, you need to angle the gearbox right down though. It took ALOT of jiggling to get the mounts to line up, which they did finally, and then I jacked up the gearbox to the tunnel, then found the transmission mount was good, but the holes for the bolts where in the wrong places, so re-drilled them and bolted it up
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0682.jpg

So once the gearbox was mounted, I tighted the engine mounts and gearbox mounts and.....

I got a nice thick alloy rad to go in, plus i gotta get some electric fans to mount to the rad. Looks like its gonna be rather tight though

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0691.jpg

The sump just clears the arb, which will be replaced with some godspeed ones soon,
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0673.jpg

I was thinking the car was gonna ground out once i lowered it to the ground, with all the extra weight, as its mega low anyway, but it sits nice, low like it was, cant really notice it being any lower.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0693.jpg

Next up Im going to find a prop specialist that can make me a custom prop, i got the r33 prop and the s13 one ready, just need to be joined, if anyone knows anywhere good let me know.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0695.jpg

Also make sure you get one of these....

Well, i'be bought some Godspeed antiroll bars to be fitted tomorow, as the old ones look nasty! Also I got my C's comarades short shifter through from RHDjapan, was a good service, took just over a week to get here from japan.

Well today I fitted my antiroll bars, well anti roll bar. I didnt fit the front as the sump is so close to the standard arb, and the new godspeed one is thicker so would hit it. So at the moment its just the rear fitted!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0720.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0722.jpg

So with that done I thought I'd bolt up the exhaust system and see how the fit was. I bought a skyline down pipe, and a s13 little decat pipe, which so I read somewhere bolts up to the rest of my cat system. So on went the down pipe and decat, and to my suprise all fitted up rather nicely...

This afternoon i got my alloy rad out to see what the fit was like. Its a 52mm thick jobbie so its gonna be tight, and it is! Im going to have to run blower/push eleccy fans for sure!

Well, today i got my custom propshaft back from A1 prop shafts (01519441586) and am well chuffed at what they have done. I sent off the skyline front section with my s13 front section and rear section, some notes and all the measurements and they made this up. All the original brackets and bits are all there still in place on the new shaft. All I gotta do is bolt it up and weh hey.

The original props

And the new jobbie

samcourtney86
16-04-2008, 05:39
Hopefully around 290bhp, as is only upgrades are the apexi filter and straight through exhaust. Once its up and running smoothly I'll increase the power I expect! Im well pleased how its coming along. Yeh go for a rb engine! RB20's are cheaper too and till sweet! I cant wait to hear it now!....

samcourtney86
28-04-2008, 20:38
Well, i thought Id crack on with the radiator and intercooler next, so i can then try and start it up! I bought a pair of 11" cooling fans and a revotec fan controller from apex. I was gonna try and scav some cheapo fans from something but I bit the bullet and bought these now.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0754.jpg

So I fitted up the rad, it seems to poke up high, and im wondering whether the bonnets going to close? If not I'll cut down the rubber bottom mounts and lower it right down. I found the bottom skyline rad hose fits but had to chop the top hose. I also gotta make up some top brackets to hold the top of the rad in place. But Im only getting it ready to start the engine at the moment so this will do.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0756.jpg

Now thats in I started on the intercooler. This is going to be more tricky as its a skyline intercooler kit, so the pipe are for the skyline engine bay. I need to get some pipe and make some custom piping now, so am going to try and weld some hard piping into place.

so did you have to make any custom mounts or were s13/rb25 conversion mounts a good buy? (other than drilling out the holes on the gearbox which you mentioned)

also if you dont mind, how much of budget did you set aside and "could" you have stuck to that...

thanks ;)

The mounts were pretty good to be fair, just a little wiggling and they all lined up. Money wise I was thinking about 2 grand, if i bought as many second hand parts as I could. But it adds up! Engine and gearbox (with ecu, turbo etc) I got for £1200 which I was chuffed with, but then on top of that, the mounts where £125 from the states, then all the belts I changed, i think was roughly £90 from nissan, oil filter and oil - £50, gearbox oil - £50, exhaust downpipe - £80, exhaust decat - £55, air filter - £55, intercooler and alloy rad and silicon hoses - £225, rad fans and electric controller £130, skyline propshaft - £35, then custom prop to be made - £90, bov- £90 and then all the other bits and pieces to go with it. Brakes are going to need upgrading! Its going to be worth it though!

samcourtney86
25-05-2008, 20:50
Well, after farting around for ages wondering why it wouldnt start, it turned out to be i had the fuel lines the wrong way around! There i was poking around with my voltometer! So as soon as I get a spare five minutes I can start properly connecting everything up, as at the moment its just bodged so I could start her up. Then the fun can begin! I've got the biggest smile on my face right now!! Sounded so good. Excuse the loud whistle in the video, theres major leakage as I have jubilee clipped anything yet!

samcourtney86
22-06-2008, 09:22
Well, my dam camera's still broke so i've missed alot of pics! I've hard wired in the main wiring now to get it started straight off the key, which is nice! Still loads of wires to connect and work out where the hell they go! I bought a nissan micra little battery from lucas for about £50 which im hopings going to be man enough for the job. It slots in nicely behind the intercooler piping and seems to start in ok at the moment.

Also i fitted my electric fans and fan controller I bought from apex. Very well made and blow well which is good. I had to mount them on the front of the rad as there wasnt enough room to fit them on the back, as i've fitted a thick alloy rad. So then i wired in the controller which was quite simply, all comes ready to go so thats all finished now. I also fitted a new thermostat while I was at it aswel. Now Im waiting for some gauges to arrived which i bought on the net, so i can see whats going on better.

Only pics i got which I took on my phone so a bit naff!!

30-06-2008, 21:57
Well, i got my gauges through from http://www.xyberautos.com/catalog/default.php

There the prosport smoked ones. thought i'd give them ago as they seem to get alot of praise for the cash. Ordered Oil temp, oil pressure, water temp and boost on the friday, and they arrived on the monday. Considering they came from singapore i was well impressed. So i cracked on with fitting them.

Decided I wanted these on the dash, I dont like them stuck on top with stands. So I went about marking out the holes to be cut...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00038.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00039.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00046.jpg

And then went for it...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00047.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00048.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00049.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00050.jpg

So then I found that theres a small metal bracket which slightly fouls the back of the gauges. So I removed this from behind the dash, only four screws, and cut it a little, and the gauges went straight in.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00065.jpg

then wired up the power to see if they work...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00066.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00067.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00068.jpg

I know there wonky in the picture, and all different coloured, they were just temp pushed in and not set up, but you get the idea.

Then tonight I had the fiddly job of trying to get the water temp sensor in the top rad hose. I bought a hose sensor adaptor thingy to screw the sensor into off ebay. Problem is I already have one in the hose, the revotec fan controller, so it was really tight fitting in another in the small tight bend of hose I had. But got there!

Well after fitting the gauges, whilst fitting the sanwhich plate for oil pressure and temp sensors, I came across some problems. Well made a load of problems! Was getting late night but wanted to crack on get the gauges working. So fitted the sandwhcih plate in between the oil filter and oil cooler, all the sensors in, fired her up to see if they were all working ok. Then noticed oil spewing out all over the floor, cut the engine and took a look. Was leaking from some where around the filter so presumed it was the dam sandwhich plate. So with 50 squids worth of fresh silkolene on the floor I took the filter off again, and the sandwhich plate, and cleaned and checked all the surfaces and did it back up, when, snap, the oil filter thread snapped of the engine! Didnt even do it that tight? But Dammit. This thread that snapped of was on the standard rb oil cooler, so i needed a new oil cooler. Took the oil cooler off the engine which is a absoulute pig of a job, just about get a hand down there with no vision.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00063.jpg

Now needed a replacement, the hunt was on. I got one from Paul at jdmgarage/japimportsuk For a great price, but turned out, typically I had a odd model oil cooler, different to the majority, and sat in a different position on the block! Anyway, finally sourced the correct one after about a month of searching, but now needed a gasket. So a mate had some gasket material so I made one up..

Had the old one as a template

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00109.jpg

After all this, wacked it on and its all good now! So prepped up with a new filter and fresh oil, and went down my private road for another test run.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00113.jpg

I gotta raise the ride height a little though, I like super low, but its silly low, I caught the exhaust on a cats eyes once, and anything but super smooth road and it scrapes. Plus I cant get my low entry jack under it now, so am gonna raise it, not a lot though;)

Oh, and started chopping the bumper ready to fit..

Can I ask where you got your pipework for the FMIC as looks a great fit.

Also what cooling fans are you running ?

Well, it does feel sometimes that everythings against you, when everything seems to go wrong, seems like its one step forward, two steps back! Ive learnt alot doing this, so am pleased Im doing it.

The intercooler piping is just the standard pipe you get with the skyline intercooler kits, chopped around a bit with extra silicon joiners and bends in. Still need the pipe out from the turbo and down to the intercooler, as Im currently using the smaller bore ca18det pipe there! Also theres going to be bonnet clearance issues where the pipe runs over the rad at the front, think im gonna chop a hole in the bonnet and maybe get a vent/bulge or something?

Oh and there apex's fans with a revotec controller, seem really good!

Paulpen
24-08-2008, 19:40
Can I ask what kit you got your pipework with as they seem to differ on a few kits. Al so what extra "bends" did you need as ive got to try and get my FMIC on asap.

May well have to go down the Apex fans route too as my 306 ones meant alot of fitting hassle and ones started to make a whirring noise :(

samcourtney86
24-08-2008, 21:52
It was a ebay intercooler, with pipes for the rb25det, thats all I remember! If I remember rightly, i bought a 90' reducing bend and a straight connector bit too. You'll have to chop and change it all around then see what bits you'll need. As I doubt you'll end up with the same lay out I came up with! Im going to eventually weld some custom pipework hopefully!

Depending how thick your rad is you could run the pipe diagonal between the pas pump pulley and alt pulley ect. i think 60-65mm pipe will fit easy. It would save modding the bonnet.

samcourtney86
05-10-2008, 08:38
No chance, the rads to thick, theres no room between the rad and engine, about a inch! So the pipes gotta go over or under really, but being rather low, under was a bit tight too. I wanted a large core radiator as I hear over heatings a issue with the RB's, especially jammed in this engine bay. We'll see though..

Nearly got the bumper chopped enough to fit back on, around the intercooler...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00234.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00203.jpg

But then, slight change of plan, locally a guy was breaking a white pre-facelift s13, so I snapped up the front bumper as I always preffered the boxy lines on them.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00227.jpg

So now back to chopping! The pre-facelift bumper seems to require alot more chopping. Also, typically the front indicators/side lights have a slighty different socket for the electrical plug to click into, how gay as it really is slightly different. A little file will do the job to make it fit, but still, whats the point in changing little things like this! Bloody Nissan.

Anyway, didnt want to chop the support bar in the middle out as I knew the bumper would sag, but it had to go... And sure enough...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00282.jpg

then
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00284.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00283.jpg

But I still got the splitter to put on so hoping that will hold it up straight a bit more, if not I'll make a bracket or something. Gonna go do this today, and hopefully get the light back on.

Also got a couple Dakota Digital boxes to try and sort the speedo and rev counter issues. I want to keep the stock dash if i can. Worked out about £35 each from the states..

Bracket? BRACKET!!!!! Just Cable tie the bumper to the bottom of the FMIC. And cut the fake vents out and put some mesh behind them  . Nice project all in all, and I now know I'm going to cut my bumper the same for my FMIC  .

Wish I had found those converters rather than swapping to the R33 speedo :(

Where do you wire them in and how do you set them up ?

samcourtney86
05-10-2008, 14:51
No Idea yet!! Quickly reading the instructions, you wire the sensor signal into the box, then it outputs the required signal, which you set, and you then wire that to the dials. Just converts the signal. --Doubt it'll be that simple though!

samcourtney86
05-10-2008, 20:41
Well I got the headlights back on now, and cut the bumper a little more and its ready to go back on now, just gotta drill some holes in the wings for the zipties.

My pipework will be running through the original hole so hopefully i shouldnt have that problem :D

Coming on well bud  So is it all legal yet and on the road??

samcourtney86
13-10-2008, 07:35
Pipework wasnt too bad, just cut the pipe in a couple places and added a couple silcon joiners and bends here and there. Just have to cut and fit as you go. I managed to leave the washer bottle without touching it somehow, i thought people normally remove them?? But it wasnt as bad a job as I though. As for being legal, i gotta fit the bonnet somehow, then I want to get the speedo/rev counter working with me dakota digital convertors. Also while driving on my private test track, when I put power down Im getting a big judder, and a knocking from the gearbox/prop. Cant see how it can be the prop, so i reckon after all this im going to have clutch problems:eek:

Typical! Sam

My ic pipes are both on the same side so i can leave a normal battery and keep the bottle also for a bit which will be easier, only gonna go the other side when i get a new plenum

samcourtney86

09-11-2008, 19:08
Well, havent updated for ages! I finally got some brakes, off a guy on gtr.co.uk - got some r32 gtr 4pots for the front with discs and pads. These are the same calipers as the s14 i believe, but lighter and are spaced out a bit to cope with the 296mm discs from the gtr too. I bought some braided hoses with the right connections for the brake swap which meant all i had to do was re-drill the discs to 4 stud, then its a bolt on job! So heres some pics..

First up i paint stripped the calipers and gave them a lick of paint to bring them up to scratch a little
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0020.jpg

The gtr discs re-drilled. Easy to do, although i did have access to a pillar drill which was really good. Came out spot on
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0026.jpg

So first up, wheel on
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0019-1.jpg

Wheel off
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0020-1.jpg

Then remove the two caliper mounting bolts and remove the old caliper
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0022-1.jpg

These can be tight, i used a extension. Once the calipers off, rest in on the wishbone out the way for now
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0023.jpg

Now you left with the disc to remove. Should pull off, may need a little tap and bang to loosen it and off it will slide
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0025-1.jpg

Disc off
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0028-1.jpg

Now a little bit of butchering is in need. The old heatshield is too small for the larger gtr discs so will need bending out. As you can see below I cut slots and just bent it out straight with some pliers
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0056.jpg

Then new disc on...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0057.jpg

calipers and pads ready
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0058.jpg

The caliper mounts back on the original bolt holes
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0060.jpg

Then carefully with a big screw driver lever the pistons back in on the caliper, then slot in the pads and thingies
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0061.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0062.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0064.jpg

samcourtney86
09-11-2008, 19:11
Now whack the dust guard back on the rear of the caliper, and attact the hose
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0067.jpg

Unbolt old brake hose and remove the old caliper now
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0069.jpg

And attach new hose
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0070.jpg

And Job done!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSCF0034.jpg

Now just bleed the brakes and your done! Should be better than those poxy standard brakes!

Also my dam water pumps started leaking!! The waters seeping out of the hole on the bottom of the pump, indicating that it needs replacing! Oh god, this meant removing the bumper again, the intercooler off, the rad drained, hoses off, electric fans all disconnected and removed, rad removed then this gives me room to start removed all the belts and belt covers to get to it! Anyway, done it now and swapped if for a new water pump which i got off ebay for £55. Hoping this will be ok. Its back together and seems to be running ok now.

Next up i got these...

Thanks, its finally coming on. There are so many little jobs that just take ages that you dont think about! Like Ian said about, I used rb rad hoses, bottom on straight fit and the top needs a chop, but I expect you'll fit a gauges sensor or/and a fan controller in there anyway so choppings gonna happen anyhow.

Razzario, splitting the intercooler pipes an idea i suppose, dont know how restrictive it would be? I was thinking if it comes to it carefully clamp the pipe in the vice and squash it oval shape. But we'll see!
Im glad to put some useful info up on the board for others to gain from, as i have learnt lots from here, and certain people. would never of dreamed about doing this engine swap if it wasnt for sxoc!

Well, a bit of a nightmare getting the fronts fitted. They are 17x9 rims, and they foul the coilovers! So I finally ended up fitting 12mm spacers, which finally cleared the coilovers, the only problem now was the wheel studs were no where near long enough to get a nut on! So after faffing about with new wheel studs, I finally got some longer ford fit jobbies which fit perfectly, but the thread in the stud is now m12x1.5, where as the nissan ones where m12x1.25. So needed new bolts for those too. But, got there in the end!! Next job, get the bonnet on!

Old versus new stud
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00422.jpg

I used a socket as like a big washer, put it over the new stud, then put a wheel nut on the stud and wound it on, which pulled the new stud tight into the hub, fixing it in place

nice mate, love the wheels too,

the rev counter trick cost me about 3p for a 1k ohm resistor from maplins wired from the rev counter wire on the ecu to the earth wire on the ecu, its called a pull up resistor and the dash then reads about a 3rd too much, so you take the clocks out and turn the pot on the back of the rpm counter itself by about a quater clockwise and it will be much closer, you will need to do this a few times to get it right, but i made a flying lead so i could hold the rev counter out and adjust it without having to refit the dash every time

samcourtney86
19-11-2008, 06:26

Well, been faffing about with the speedo lately. I want the speedo dial working properly so looked at the different options as there doesnt seem to be a straight solution. I decided the best bet was to get some r33 clocks and put those in, then go about re-wiring and cutting to try fit it in. I got some r33 clocks from Paul at JDM garage, who I cant recommend enough. I started taking these apart to have a look at the insides. I decided Id try and remove only the speedo dial itself and motor, and fit that in the s13 cluster, as to keep everything else working, and only having to re-wire the 4 wires for the speedo. The clocks in kph, but that doesnt bother me.

I started by removing the standard s13 cluster...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00545.jpg

I then removed the s13 speedo clock. Its held in by 4 screws from the back. These four screws also pass the speed signal in, speed signal out, ground and power. The r33 speedo clock has the screws in different places so its not a straight swap.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00549.jpg

Then I needed to cut plactic off here and there, and very carefully with the hole saw cut a hole out so the motor for the needle can poke out the back, as it protrudes lots more on the r33 speedo. Being carefull not to hit and cut the circuitry on the back of the cluster.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00550.jpg

Then had to trim a little off the plastic backing on the r33 speedo
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00552.jpg

Then a test fit. Its a little too big really (i get that alot:D), so doesnt fit in the cluster flush, but good enough for me, for now anyway. A screw and a mini ziptie to mount it in there.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00554.jpg

Right, now just the wiring to sort. Theres four screws that go in the back of the speedo. Originally these would go through the rear of the cluster, through the circuit and into the speedo, mounting it and sending the signal/power etc to the clock. But because the clocks not made for this cluster, i had to put a ring terminal on the end of each of four wires, and screw the rings to the back of the speedo clock. Then run the wires from them round to the back of the cluster, to the circuit, and solder these directly to the correct pins on the circuit.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00583.jpg

Then the finished dial fitted. A bit wonkey, could do with getting the dial face made big, to cover the gaps. But im not bothered really, aslong as it works.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00581.jpg

Then wacked them back in. If you wanted you could probably change the needles over to have the s13 one i guess, but i just kept the red r33 one. Im happy enough with how it fits. Id rather keep the S13 cluster, with everything working on it, so am chuffed this works.

I connected up the speed signal wires from the gearbox sensor, jacked up the rear and started it up, sure enough, I now have a speedo!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/samcourtney86/DSC00591.jpg

Also today i raised the ride height at the front as the wheels were hitting the arches on the big bumps. So now, im gonna book it in for MOT as soon as I can:thumbs:

Fing fair play to you chap

I look at doing it that way and gave up as I could seem to get the R33 one apart.

Fancy doing mine ?! I want my clock back :(

What did you do in the end? Didnt you put the whole r33 cluster in? That must look neat?!

Paulpen
21-12-2008, 22:33
Whole cluster after a week of cutting and trimming everything.

Got it all to work but now the boost gauge has gone pop and I have an aftermarket one anyways.

Looks ok but id rather have the standard one back in it !

Thought you were going to use that signal converter thingy you got ?

samcourtney86
22-12-2008, 15:41
Yeh, couldnt get the signal thingy to work, dont think it converts from the right signal, dammit! Unless im doing it wrong. Would of looked good yeh with all standard dash, but this will do for now.

I think I might get speedo cutting tomorrow then and rewire it all back :(

Have you wired your speedo converter in to ?

Know my stuff????!! Just work it out as I go along! No I havent wired in the convertor, its just running the rb25 standard speed sensor to the r33 speedo- so as it originally was. Need some seats next, and a 1.5way diff i think...

Well, its got a MOT! And now road legal. All seems good at the moment, so much fun and I love it. It failed the MOT the first time on headlight height, rear discs worn out, dreaded sills needed welding and emissions. Headlights I adjusted easy. I then replaced the rear discs and pads to cure that one. Got my local welder to weld the sills up nice. Then the emissions. Well it turned out the alternator wasnt charging, so the ecu wasnt getting enough power and so the engine was running lumpy. Turned out it was the two little charge controller wires I hadnt connected from the alternator. Once these were wired in it charged up and off I went. Went straight through the re-test then.

Anyway, old discs

Looks sweet bud, sooo low... u get much scrubbage? Jealous now that mines the one not going good...

samcourtney86
20-01-2009, 10:44
It failed on emissions as the alternator wasnt charging and giving sufficient power for the ecu, so was running lumpy. It does scrub on the big bumps at speed but nothing to worry about, i hope! So much fun, im taking it easy though still, getting used to it. Really dont want to crash it somewhere after all thats gone into it. So much fun though!

Just a update as I havent for ages! Not alots happened, been enjoying that sound and extra umph. Apart from a boost problem. Been over boosting and I cant work I why! Buggered the turbo oil seals on the turbo and it started smoking bad! So bought a spare standard turbo for £100 and fitted that. All seems good, but still over boosts. Bought a gizzmo IBC boost controller hoping to cure it, but nope. Turns out its boost creep! Not enough back pressure. I wedged a baked bean can in the exhaust to create back pressure and went for a spin, sure enough, boost to .7 bar as standard and held there! Used to boost up to 1 bar +! I have a 3" downpipe and system all the way. hmm never heard skylines having this problem before, thought it was a common setup. So got to think of a cure there. Also booked in to rising sun performance to be mapped and a dyno run. Anyway, some random toying pics of what I've been up to the last month or two...

And as for the over boosting mine was doing the same thing as i have a 3" turbo back, i tried an older profec b first and that couldnt do much about it and then i brought a hks evc boost controller which was much better

It has a self learning feature which i learns the boost curve on standard boost and takes that into account when u set your boost up, works perfect now and my god it makes a difference!!!! :D

What bar did u set it up to???

13-04-2009, 19:56
I did, actuator boost does the same thing!

Starks
14-04-2009, 07:19
If actuator does the same thing id be making sure the actuator arm isnt sticking or your vac pipes are all connected etc on the engine bud, and also u got it plumbed up correctly :wack:

May just be someot simple

samcourtney86
14-04-2009, 18:04
pipes are all good, all plumbed in properly. Tested the actuator and it opens the wasegate at .7 bar. All works as it should! Until you drive it. But creating back pressure cured the problem which says to me it is boost creep! Dammit!

15-04-2009, 07:09

Yeh i really like the pre face lift front bumper, only problem is its a slight creamyer white. But it'll do for now. Is this a different white used or is it just faded more?

And yeh its weird having this boost creep, no one else seems to have the problem with a 3" straight through!

Just had the boot finally welded up ready for smoothing over and painting now. Getting there...

Really inspiring, I've just read through the whole thread, good work
I've just got a cheapo S13 auto to get road legal (just discs hopefully) which is going to become my daily driver and (at a later date) drift slag once I start swapping bits. I've wanted to put an RB25 in an S13 for ages, and your how-to guide looks pretty handy for things to watch out for!

My daily is an R33 GTS-T which I'd love to strip as a donor - I can't justify it though because I need the money it owes me  Looks like I'll have to wait until I can afford to get another RB after I sell it. Cracking job though, you've inspired me to go outside and start messing around with the S13!

Ah its good to have some nice comments, as it takes me ages to take pics and do write ups during the build. Ive learnt so much off this forum and the people on it so thought id try and help others as I learn too! Its fun working on the s13, once you've dragged yourself up and out to the garage/drive. Ive never had a garage till this one, which we built last year. Sooo handy in the winter months!

At the moment powerwise I think about 290bhp and hopefully once mapped at Rising sun performance at the start of may, should be 300+ and running soooo much smoother. fingers crossed. Sam

Last night I fitted my new turbo elbow. Its just an XSpower jobbie but for £27 delivered off ebay i cant complain. Looks good for the cash! Im hoping this will cure my boost creep problem with the less restrictive design for the wastegate. I havent been for a test run yet, will do that tonight and fingers crossed it will. Was fairly simple in theory to remove the elbow, just fiddly. Removed the downpipe, then two 10mm bolts holding on the elbow heatshield. Remove the heatshield and then 6 bolts that hold the elbow on. Then off it comes, swap the exhaust sensor across to the new elbow and refit.

I didnt take the turbo off, thats a spare turbo i had in my pics below!

The new elbow

Wow, just read the whole thread, start to finish. Excellent work :notworthy

Would you say that an RB20 swap would be easier? I gather something to do with speedo stuff etc? And is the box smaller, meaning less tunnel bashing?

I am really keen on an RB swap now, and will be looking to source all the bits asap

Osiris Serve's. A winners choice

Dave270r
22-04-2009, 14:47
Make sure there is sufficient clearance for the wastegate as my Brother had issues with an XS power elbow on his Skyline. The wastegate would catch on the inside of the elbow and caused overboosting.

Looking good though man

samcourtney86
24-04-2009, 06:26
Yeh cheers, i double checked the wastegate would open while installing, it does thank god.

haha and yeh, cant go wrong with the osiris serves haha. I dont think theres alot of difference doing the rb20 swap, bar the speedo issues an easier fix like you said. rb20's seem alot cheaper too, but I knew if I went that way id finish it, wanting the rb25 really instead! Not that the RB20's not an awesome engine. The sound though of the RB's is insane, everytime I plant my foot i still cant help but grin. Such a child.... haha.

Im after a decent LSD now as the standard viscous diff seems rubbish! But, im skint. Sam

Well i took the nissan to Rising Sun Performance for a custom remap on friday. However, the car developed a missfire unfortunatly resulting in the map not being done. turns out its the coil packs so spitfire coilpacks are on order and then back to rising sun for the remap. With the missfire it still managed 333.6 bhp on the rollers though with their stage one ecu upgrade, so i was still well chuffed. Well impressed and would recommend them. Sam

Wow, just got the car back from Rising Sun Performance. I booked it in for a custom mapping session on their dyno as I hear nothing but good about them. They remap the standard ECU and jesus, what a difference. Not just the extra power but the whole driving experience. Engine runs soooo much better, like a new car! Really really good, i reccomend them! Unfortunatly my car started missfiring though, which resulted in new spitfire coilpacks, which arent cheap at £327 ish i think. That cured the missfire and then RSP wired in a diagnostic port along side the ECU and carried on mapping. Im well happy with the results, cack my pants now, feels so fast! Also flames well, melting my rear bumper fairly well:thumbs:. Ill try and get a good video up soon and more pics! But for any other RB engine about I highly recommend RSP for mapping!
