It's been 6 months in the making so far, but it's getting closer to being done.

Some stats about the engine.

Current:

1UZFE from a LS400. R154 gearbox from a Toyota Supra MA70. Lots of fabrication.

To be done:

294 degree cams x 4
8x throttle bodies exiting through the bonnet
4x exhausts, exiting two either side of the car before the rear wheels
8000rpm rev limit
3 pedal, pedal box
Vems ecu
Custom Defi dashboard

Should be a laugh when it's finally back up and running. Been off the road since June. Wish I could drive it

Couldn't do it (as they're doing pretty much all the work, I'm just a thick driver :D ) without these two gays:

This is a great project Steve. Do you aim to have it ready for BDC at the end of March, or is it going to be an ongoing thing? Either way I'm sure it'll be awesome when it's finished

Yep, the tunnel around the bellhousing had to be carefully tweaked with a 20lb sledge hammer.:D The prop is still to be made but its basically going to be the front bit of a 154 prop welded to an S13 prop.

I wanted it for the start of the season, but that's not likely to happen. ASAP is the obvious answer, but end of spring, beginning of summer would be nice.

Paul is busy as I type this beavering away at rebuilding the sump to be a home-made greddy style thinner but wider sump. More pics of that later.

I've been trying to get all the wires out of the engine bay, and other bits and bobs in preperation for the Painless loom thats winging its way to me from H'america. Also designing my dashboard layout with all my fancy lectrics. Will be looking sexy time when its complete. A complete redesign of the dash.

Gotta do some cutting of the engine mounts for the manifold sexytime to happen.

10-03-2008, 11:59
wow, i got pissed off wiring up my misses allarm yesterday lol, let allone that lot,

let me get this strait,

that loom that you get comes with a fuse box and that switch pannel, then all the wires are labled as to where they go on the car, such as lights, indicator stalks (or does it do away with them and use switches instead), fuel pumps, dash etc............................................... etc,

and you just have to route them to the desired places and it should all work,

or have i got this all wrong lol

SteveDunn
10-03-2008, 12:08
That's pretty much how it works yeah. I've done away with the stalks though, as they've been hit off countless times in the past when spinning the wheel. So indicators are on flick switches, wipers etc. :)

Wiring is still ongoing, whenever Phil gets some time to play with it (rarely).

The holes of the MR2 Turbo lightened Fidanza flywheel have been er... forgotten the ****ing word. Lengthened :wack: to match the PCD of the 1UZ crank.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/flywheel/DSCF3292.jpg

Also there has been a bit cut out of the side of the "hill" (yeah, I'm ****ing rocking the English tonight... tired...) so that the spacer plate from the 1UZs autobox can be used to center the bolts, as I don't fancy it spinning off up through my legs and out of the roof.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/flywheel/DSCF3290.jpg

Add some ARP 4AG flywheel bolts

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/flywheel/DSCF3289.jpg

This is the underneath. It has 4-5 threads visible on the outside. If this is not enough then I will get the engineering company to cut one of the spacers down a bit.

The spacers are that thickness to stop the flywheel from being too close to the engine, longer bolts is the easiest option, there isn't enough on those spacers to make much difference if they were ground down anyway.

Hi mate,

Looking good, as you know im just starting up my 1uz project and was wondering if you knew any good sources for a motor. ive looked around and found them from the odd breaker on ebay for around £250. Any better ideas?

I know im a bit behind but perhapse when you get to the ITBs i might be able to help out on the development/fabrication ideas. shame you live so far away from me.

Keep up the good work:thumbs:

Getting the engine cheap is only just the start......

Factor in the gearbox/clutch/flywheel/release bearing/pedal box/manifolds and £250 looks like a VERY small amount.

not sure. i was just told by a guy who bought my fiesta project about it.
and when my bike went in for MOT last week i was also told the same thing by them (i dont have a speedo on the bike as its a crosser with only daylight MOT so its bare minimum to pass mot) so i just bolted a spare to the bars for MOT sake.

Not really. Some more wiring has been done. It goes in to have its manifolds made up on Tuesday. Paul is on his way down in the morning to attack it. Hopefully have a few more updates by the end of the weekend.

Final push to get it done in a month to six weeks (I'm going to Germany in it at the end of July...)

SteveDunn
19-05-2008, 09:57
Paul and Chris (Moby-Dick) came down this past weekend to get some brainstorming done.

I have a little (big) list in my unit of stuff that needs to be done to get the car working and MOT'able, as I'm going to the Nurburgring at the end of July and I HAVE to take this car.

Problem being is that I've pretty much run out of money. I have £10 left to my name right now and 1.5 weeks until payday, where I'll pay off my overdraft and that's about it. Sadly this means that my project has slipped into "budget" mode for the time being.

My number one concern was the fact that we'd decided to go the pedal box route, as it was easiest option with the space issues we have (ie, can't fit brake booster and clutch master cylinder in the bay as the engine is in the way). The one that I wanted (after trying another) is £600. I don't have £600. Whilst mulling over this, I went to Tesco to get us some munchies. I came back to find Paul had done this...

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/18th%20may%202008/DSCF3593.jpg
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/18th%20may%202008/DSCF3594.jpg

He's cut the bulkhead and raised the clutch master cylinder up a bit. We have to extend the pedal in the car to make it normal position again, but that's no biggy. The brake booster also now fits, thanks to some chopping of the cam cover. This has saved me a shitload of money, and means I can use the standard pedals, which are nice to use if im honest.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/18th%20may%202008/DSCF3596.jpg

So, out came the engine and box again for more fine adjustments...

On these went.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/18th%20may%202008/DSCF3598.jpg

And some balls in Moby-Dick's face.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x90/SteveDunnDMON/1UZFE%20swap/18th%20may%202008/DSCF3597.jpg

Tonight the car goes to have its manifolds fabricated. It comes back in a week, then instantly gets shipped off to Phil LS to be wired up finally and forevreererly. Hoorah.

Fingers crossed it will be alive in less than a month.

30psi
19-05-2008, 10:06
In case you continue to have issues with the clutch master cylinder use one off an MR2 and adapt the bolt pattern to get it to fit. It's a lot smaller.

The R154 had a pull type clutch and the MR2 has a push type clutch, so an aftermarket hydraulic bearing is required.

The manifold is going to be fully heat wrapped up to stop problems with the areas that it's close to. It's tucked up real tight underneath, which kinda means I don't have to worry about my heaters working anymore :wack:

I can't wait to hear this car starting up for the 1st time... :notworthy :)

My pal's got a Mk2 Capri 2.0l Laser that he was wanting to put a ford V8 into, but after realising the prices of them and the lack of manual gearbox options, he's not so sure now.

So I've been trying to persuade him to use the 1UZ in the Capri instead. :D

He's not too sure because he's wanting the huge 'cammed up' lumpy sound, or the big carb'd throaty sound maybe... I reckon he really thinks the UZ sounds too smooth to be a 'real' V8!
I say ''GO THE UZ man!!'' :whip: :wack:

I've not heard any good vids of any tuned or de-restricted 1UZ's in action to be able to let him hear how it could sound when fitted with the right intake/exhaust etc, but im sure it'll sound amazing!

Hope that this car will help me to change his mind... it's gonna be seriously BAD mate, can't wait to see/hear it fired up, awesome build mate.

i dunno, i think it would look quite mad as long as small rear boxes were used, and not the typical jap stylee.

either that or a system that looks like POLOs s14a but both the pipes seperate rather than split from one like his are.

im quite interested as to how the V8 will sound through a typical jap can tho, are you sure 3" is not a little big bore for NA power tho??

Nothings happened for ages, waiting for the Vems to be rewired. So frustratingly close to being done, yet seems like years to go. Been threatening to set fire to the lot alot recently.

Still, had some wheels turn up today that made things a little better. When fitted they're 18x10.5 et3. No tyres on them yet, but some fitting pics here.

In comparison to the 8.5s...

Feck knows Ken. Depends on the wiring being done at some point this century :)

Wheelspecs for those interested:

18x9.5 ET10 front (ET30 +20mm spacer) 225/40/18
18x10.5 ET3 rear (ET28 +25mm spacer) 255/35/18

Rear is going to be swapped out to a 15mm spacer after JAE, cos it's about 10mm too far out for my aesthetics.

It might be worth getting a stock S13 wiring loom in good nick as removing the ECU part is relatively striaght forward - it took me an evening.
Essentially late 80s early 90s Jap cars have the ECU and car looms as pretty seperate entities as a lot of the original design was based on carbed engines with distributors. The car loom has the usual lights, windows etc as well as the standard engine functions: Starter motor, oil pressure switch, dash water temperature.

From that the VEMS loom will need only power and the ignition switch wire to activate, the seperate fuses and relays handle the power distribution the rest is described in the 2JZ documentation here:

Martin - probably many blows from various leaks, some air ways that were open (which I block at the end and cause it to stall) and the fact that it hasnt got a map on it at all at the moment :)

Gary - It will have more when the supercharger goes on :D

I think it's the manifold that probably does that. :D

How is the project coming along, I did the same conversion with my S13 but went the turbo route. Just push through the pains, you'll love it in the end.

As usual it's stalled because I don't have enough money.

Is your car manual converted? If so did you use the R154 box? What release bearing have you used? As other than mapping that's the last thing for mine to do. Frustrating :)

Money's always a problem, I can't get enough of it myself ;-)

Ye, got the R154 box in there. I'm running a 7.25" clutch pack with the Howe Racing hydraulic release bearing.

whats the ongoing issue with the release bearing? Is it box or engine related? As im using same box so a heads up would be nice lol :)

biggest problem people normally have with the hydraulic release is leaks, a BIG mistake people make with them is they forget to limit the travel on the pedal, it's a critical thing that has to be done to prevent it from leaking or damaging something.

Now, you're the second person to mention this Howe Racing bearing. I will start hunting for information. Thanks :)

Ben, there's just a complete lack of information about what parts to use when manualising a 1UZFE. Understandable, as the few places that sell kits want their secrets kept. I'm just fed up of spending cash on stuff that doesn't work :) I now hate the word "custom" with a passion :D

It's now connected to the engine and in the car. We weren't able to make the wheels go around as we need to get a conversion thing for the braided hydraulic line things to connect to the clutch master cylinder. A ****ing £1 part stopping my fun :wack:

Next weekend I'll have that sorted hopefully. So close!!!!!!

So yeah, for the first time since this project began, EVERYTHING that has been bought for it is in the car. Nothing lying around on the floor of the D:MON unit or in some post office somewhere. Phew. :wack:

I'd like to say a matter of weeks, but whenever I say that it ends up being another 3 months down the line before anything happens. So I think i'll hedge my bets and go with sometime next year :D

I am only a year over my original deadline at the moment anyway :wack:

In more news, had the power steering hose fabbed up today. Going to go fit it in a bit.

It's how Nissan would have wanted it ! :D have you just put an extra bundle of wires in for effect !? :wack:

Im glad you stuck with it

SteveDunn
17-03-2009, 08:55
haha sadly not. Even with the complete removal of all Nissan wiring, there's still so much to confuzzle me. Although to be fair that bunch is pretty much the entire wiring for the car (non engine related).

So, fitted up the power steering bits last night - for once a fabricated part went on straight away with no ****ing around! I ended up bleeding alot all over the car before noticing but hey, that just proves that something successful happened :wack:

In other news - forgetting that i'd removed the 9th injector (9th!!) from the fuel system and then firing up the fuel rail means that the D:MON unit now stinks a little bit of fuel after a jet fired at the ceiling.

Today she fired up again for the first time in about 6 months :wack: With everything connected and switched on and working. It sounds ****ing angry and revs like a mother****er to say the least. There's a video that Rads will upload when he gets in tonight. Revs so fast. Awesome. Just need to get a tiny pipe made and the clutch bled and hopefully it will turn its wheels and go off and be mapped. Woosaaaa :D
