Thought it was about time i started to post my project in the making so you guys can tell me your thoughts on the progress and where i might have gone wrong,

So here goes, bought my white s13 back in march 2007 for £1000 but the bad news was it had no engine, gearbox, ecu,or loom but the upside was it was a pretty solid shell and had brand new 17" rota boost wheels and tires fitted, also had brand new apex coilovers and aluminium rad and full stainless exhaust system so the first thing i set out to do was buy a donar car which i found for £400 which was complete so set about taking the engine from one and fitting it to another, no problems then fitted a t28, sard 660cc injectors, z32 afm, 255lph fuel pump and apexi power fc and commander and a front mount intercooler and had it mapped by steve sadler who did an amazing job, the car went from mild to wild with a few live mapping sessions but sadly the engine was a shitter and has just died on me.

Now have gone off the white and started to get the car sprayed BAYSIDE BLUE (i know its been done before but i LOVE the colour) had the door and boot shuts done and now about to do the engine bay when the old engine is out.

Bought a vertex front and rear bumper and have now got uras side skirts and chargespeed wings to go on but will get them sprayed first :)

anyway back to the story:

SO managed to find a complete rb20 engine, gearbox, loom, chipped ecu, prop and turbo for £570 delivered today thanks to a superstar called becks ( you know who you are :D)

now the fun begins (:() well im abit nervous as never done anything like this before but will keep you posted as work continues

Can anyone tell me how to post up pics as i havent a clue

Thanks

potts85
22-12-2007, 13:32
just looking for someone to help me do this converstion

how do i go about photo bucket?

Ol'_200sx_thing
22-12-2007, 14:22
go to photobucket.com and open an account, you load the photos into that, then use the insert image icon ( its at the top of where you write replies etc, down from a white smilie face, 3 along ) and then post the link.

Sorry if thats a little confusing, someone can prob clear it up, ive been up for about 11 hours and im a little tired :)

As for help, im waiting to find out if my mate is sback so i can stay with him, if i can i can do all the mechanical work, but i cant do wiring, still learning and not very good, but Buffy off here can do plug and play loom conversions. Drop him a Pm:thumbs:

Good luck with your project - the rb20 is a good engine - ive got an r32 and i like the power it puts out - got a couple of minor things to do to tweek it a bit - fitted a mines ecu - still got fmic to plumb in - fitted apexi air filter, after market exhaust and driftworks front pipe to help things - have had it on the dyno but it was running lean at the time so they didnt run it - got an fpr to fit to sort that. What sort of power are you hoping to get from this - and are you planning any mods on installation or putting it in as standard and taking it from there

potts85
26-12-2007, 14:10
just gonna put it in as standard and go from there, got a front mount and a chipped ecu so will build from that

FYI the photobucket thing................

when you upload an image to it there will be a nuber of code boxes below the pic. If you left click the [IMG] code it will say copied then you just need to paste it into your reply.

Whats the weight compared to the CA?

M.D.
28-12-2007, 17:40
nice one mate, im not too worried about the piping its just the wiring thing, hoping that with this mount kit its going to be able to use the standard prop too unmodified :)

potts85
30-12-2007, 18:15

nice colour mate, but i prefer midnite purple 3 mmmmmmmm:D

Progress is going well, the conversion wont take that long once you are into it

potts85
31-12-2007, 15:26
well still waiting for the engine and gearbox mounts to come then i can put the rb in and take the car for a trip to garage D for them to do the wiring

M.D.
31-12-2007, 15:57
loving it mate,

what kit is that and roughly how much does it normally go for as i quite fancy kitting mine out now, and my panel gaps are not great on the front (few minor bashes etc have taken there toll on the wings and bumpers) so fitting a kit i could sort a lot of it out without anyone noticeing lol.

potts85
31-12-2007, 16:07
the front bumper is a vertex one and the back is a gp sports one, they set me back £190 each and the skirts i got a deal on them from srbpower for £140 which are uras ones, also got a set of chargespeed front fenders for £200 from srbpower which i still need to fit

potts85
31-12-2007, 16:08

you can change your sig now as you dont need a rb prop

M.D.
31-12-2007, 17:22
easy mate, weld it up =]

ive not looked to see if the s13 ones fits yet, going to get the engine later in the week to test things like this, ordering my mount kit today too,

potts85
31-12-2007, 17:25
they are different sizes so im gonna use the rb one and use some bolts to block of the rear steer part

M.D.
01-01-2008, 14:22
do you have a spare CA clutch kicking about that you could trial fit to the RB20's flywheel for me, would save me hell of a lot of money if it does, and doing me a huge favour at the same time

potts85
01-01-2008, 15:03

i was going to use the rb pump as i havent got the bracket that holds the ca one anymore (unless anyone has one they would give me)

what breakers did you get the rb parts from as i need the pipes for the heating?

02-01-2008, 19:51
does anyone know if a ca18 downpipe fit a rb turbo downpipe?

need to buy a down pipe and wondered if it would fit or if i needed to buy an rb one

Ol'_200sx_thing
03-01-2008, 12:43
as mentioned you need to buy an rb one, and mate it to you ca's cat or decat, they are very close ( mine was about 15mm off) and any one who can weld should be able to make it fit for you

M.D.
03-01-2008, 12:45
hmm thats a good bit of info, ill have a look into that when i get my engine in, ill prob just cut and shut my stadandard one tho tbh, going to have to get some 3'' offcuts from the local exhaust place as i have already modded mine to suit the top mount

potts85
03-01-2008, 13:03
damn it ca ones are like £59.99 for the downpipe and decat where as the rb one is a lot more and you dont get a decat :(

Ol'_200sx_thing
03-01-2008, 13:25
go to ebay australia, there was a good deal on 3 inch downpipes and decats a while abck, maybe some more will come up

03-01-2008, 17:44
please say thats not a techniclutch clutch.
altho a friend of mine did have one and rated it very highly, maybe the skyline owners get a much better clutch than we get done over with lol

potts85
03-01-2008, 17:54
yep it is but it does come with a 4 year garentee so worth taking a risk

M.D.
03-01-2008, 18:48
lol, you say that but so did mine and over a year later and several (take several as shit loads) i still am owed a clutch that can take more than standard CA power, cos the one they sent (that should be able to take 350bhp apparently) could not even take standard at all.

i gave up in the end, they did send a replacement for the first clutch they sent which was marginally better, but still could not take anywhere near what they said it could, i had about 300 ish bhp and it slipped on that. and after that you just get nothing from them at all. a mate of mine just got one from them too and his also slips on stage 2, badly too.

if it goes wrong mate they wont give you anything, just warning you thats all, they have done the same to many others, oh and the bearing they send lasts about 3 days before making a horrendus noise.

just make sure you get someone who works in a clutch fitters to give you a reciept for fitting because they will use the fact that you fitted it as reason for it not working properly,

hopefully you will be ok as my mate with his skyline was, just be careful thats all

potts85
03-01-2008, 18:49
thanks for the heads up

M.D.
03-01-2008, 18:54
like i say, just hope yours is ok bud, would hate for you to get it all in and find it slips,

potts85
03-01-2008, 19:07
does anyone know if it possible to put the rb in with the gearbox attached without removing the cross member?

or could i put the engine in then attach the gearbox after?

Ol'_200sx_thing
03-01-2008, 19:25
its possible :D

I did it with the RB25, took some time and juggling but it goes

M.D.
03-01-2008, 20:56
im going to do it that way :)

Ol'_200sx_thing
03-01-2008, 21:12
TBH if you unbolt the subframe and leave it hanging down while you put the engine in things will go a little smoother.
Then bolt the cross momber back in, then bolt the engine in.

Just a thought ;)

potts85
04-01-2008, 12:58

well done mate, whats the ETA on it being finished, glad these mounts worked, good bit of info for others looking to do this conversion,

well im hoping to have the car done in the 2 weeks
just need to sort out a starter motor and a throttle cable

then it will be paint time after that

M.D.
10-01-2008, 21:42
never thought of the throttle cable, what one do you have to use, i have both the RB one and the CA ones,

hoping that the CA starter may fit, :)

Ol'_200sx_thing
11-01-2008, 00:28

11-01-2008, 14:21
potts, dont spose you have a pic that has your gearbox in it do you, ive just got mine and i want to make sure its an RB20 one and not a 25,

when you look at the output end, i remember the s13 box having a thin steel cup at the end, this one doesnt and it stops right where the end of the gearstick plate ends,
does this sound right, dont really want to have to get my prop cut and shut really.

potts85
11-01-2008, 14:38
aint got a pic at the mo but i had a look and it looks like i have a cup on the end like the ca

sorry :(

looking forward to see the pics... heheh

anyway... you guys make me so so jealous... :(:( doing those rb conversions...

lol

M.D.
11-01-2008, 14:58
ah its ok, i think the cup has just been popped off, there are some marks in that area from screwdrivers etc,
and seing as tho they have broken the clutch cylinder off to get it off id say they were a little brutal when stripping this car,
just hope the rest of its ok. all the gears feel fine and there is no excessive play in the shafts,

hoping that all my sensors will swap from box to box as they have also butchered them  i hate scrappys grrrrrr

i want to run something like a T04E turbo on the engine so not to be massively laggy but still go well, but ill stick the standard tubby on the top for now, just for ease of changing

sweet mate, just thought id let you know that the CA started seems to fit perfectly

ive heard that a little [ahem\] massage [ahem] to the sump is a good idea to make it clear a little better, not sure if im going to bother with that tho, i just may space the ARB down a little if it does hit,

i really cant wait to get mine in, ive spend all afternoon today getting soaking wet taking the rest of my engine out, still not got my mounts yet but ive worked it out that they should be here by monday if they are the same rate as yours were,

does anyone know if the GTR flywheel is any lighter than the standard RB20 fly, if it is then ill swap them over as i have one here for some reason lol

i dont think im going to be able to get my engine in this week as im on late shift so on my own all morning with no help getting this engine in may be a little tricky lol,
but first thing next sat ill swing the bugger right in,

its so dam wet here its untrue. got soaked through today and all i did was swap a few gearbox bits over and remove the bottom end and gearbox that was left in my car, (which only took 20 mins tops)
the pikey garage that removed my gearbox made a right hash up of it, the spedo sensor wire was cut off and the sensor itself was damaged so im going to try and fit the s13 one, the bolt wont come undone tho and just rounded off. on both boxes,

also the metal dust sheld that is on the output end of the box was missing so i have had to pinch that from my old s13 box, its funny how many things are exactly the same on the two boxes.
also found out that an s13 quickshift fits the RB box fine too, glad about that cos i love the feel of mine.

how you getting on with the wiring on yours buddy, i didnt risk that bit myself lol.

 great mate, thanks, i havent got the loom yet so its no problem, nor my engine mounts yet, but i looked today and they arrived in customs yesterday morning so should well be here by tomorrow,
allong with my top mount manifold :D

just going to seal the standard wastegate shut on the turbo by replacing the acctuator with a solid bar, and use my external wastegate, then its all ready for when i want to change to a larger turbo (im sure it wont be long lol)

made some pipes up for my intercooler tonight, hmmmmm lobsterbacking lol takes fooking ages but well worth it imo, :nod:but i like the prefabbed look lol

calicagesracing
15-01-2008, 16:01
couple of jobs well worth doing before you go too far mate:

change water pump (mine leaked after about 3 weeks)

change 2 short water pipes under the inlet manifold
both between 2 and 4 inches long and about 3/4" internal bore
(one burst while mapping, the other during a trackday:mad:)
a really good move is change out all the water pipes cos they are all around 15yo at this stage:rolleyes:
they are an absolute cnut to change with the engine in

head gasket is also a good idea but that takes time and if you rare anything like me you just want to get it in there and running;)

also if you are putting in management, stick in 6 ca injectors.
that should see you through to well over 300bhp without spending much cash

M.D.
15-01-2008, 20:28
glad someone said those things, ill have a look on mine when im putting it in

does sound very nice, but you could hear that there was not much power behind it thats all.

im missing the savage sound of the exhaust that i used to get with the stage 3 set up i had so hoping to get similar from this next engine,

Hey, nice project thread... great pics and progress mate. :)

I just got my PC working again after losing my hard drive and im catching up on the progress of evryone since... there's a few RB20's in progress, so hopefully between us, we might be able to persuade more tuning companies to stock more RB20 performance parts available 'off the shelf'! lol

Just thought id include my own exhaust sound too, for another comparison! lol

Here's a clip or 2 of my Nur Spec's sound... its got the HKS split 3'' elbow and Blitz front pipe too, but the system's still partially restricted due to the reduction at the decat section... its 72mm, ive still to get it increased to 80mm.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8sxeRFFFKE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCq17VJYaDI

Very airy/gurgly sound till the revs get up... but 'fraid i didnt get any footage at high rpm's.
This was revving to 4k ish!
And no more than 40% throttle either! :D

Anyway, dont mean to hijack your thread Potts'... so just wanna say 'Top Work mate' , and cant wait to see how it goes when ur on the road. :)

M.D.
13-02-2008, 18:35
love it mate, can i ask why you have cut the crossmember, im assuming its for the new rad or something, i was going to do something like that too so i can fit a big rad and the viscous fan, strange idea i know but the viscous fan always worked really well, i driove mine tonight and something vibrated like mad and then started squeling, so i think there is something up with my power steering pump allighnment, and i have a missfire too which im putting down to fouled plugs as it cleared up after a few short blats,

get that resistor in the rev counter line mate and sort out your revs problems, ive never heard of it being done before but you need to do it even to get the apexi to read it properly

potts85
13-02-2008, 18:54
cut that out due to my brother bending the shit out of it so gonna make up a panel that acts as a slam panel and will include a rad cooling panel too, also makes it easier taking the engine and gearbox out, gotta do the resister and also thinking of fitting a defi vsd

M.D.
13-02-2008, 19:00

Cool car, rb20 is a nice s13 project. I have read the project missed some text regarding what bits you need to make a swap.

Rb20
gearbox
rb20-ecu
wiring
bang the shit out the firewall
massage the sump

what about propshaft, enginemounts etc does it bolt up perfectly etc ?

potts85
15-02-2008, 14:41
bought a mount kit from america of ebayso you can use the s13 crossmember

as i used the mount kit the ca prop fitted perfectly

so you need:

rb engine
rb gearbox
rb wiring loom + ca loom
rb ecu
mount kit

and bang you got all you need

I am just going to start sourcing all the parts I need and then do it when I have a couple of weeks off for summer.

how come your fitting a 20 and not a 25 mate?

M.D.
26-02-2008, 20:51
how come your fitting a 20 and not a 25 mate?

if its for the same reason as me,

1. its massively cleaper to do, and buy
2. fitting the engine is just a bolt in job with no custom parts other than a mount kit needed,
3. the RB20 makes the car really driveable without having too much torque to make the back end overly lively, which is perfect for the relatively light s13,

and lastly , why not lol

getting mine RRD and mapped tomorrow :D, ill let you know how it goes, hows yours going now by the way

potts85
26-02-2008, 21:00
the rb20 came up really cheap so had it

see mine is now LESS tail happy than it was with the stage 3 CA, im assuming its due to the massive lack of torque that the RB has, i much preferr it now, are the RBs supposed to be set to 15 degrees btdc as i want to check mine soon.

what sort of milage are you getting to a tenner mate ???
