View Full Version : Mitch's 2008 Project Drift Sileighty
Well, it's time to start all over again. Paul Smith will be rocking up the S15 next year, and I'll be zippin' up my boots and going back to my S13 roots. I really regretted selling the 180SX and wasting the season messing with the S15, so decided to make another.
Last year's 180...

Welcome? :wack:

I picked this sorry looking 180 up from Sammy. After removing most of the stickers and sorting through the rubbish, twisted bumpers and dead Mars bars in the boot, I took the engine out and refitted it again so I was satisfied that it would all go together properly. I'm glad I did, so it was an evening well spent for sure.

Jeffrey and Leon from EP Racing (http://www.EPRacing.co.uk) offered me a full bodykit for 2008:thumbs::worthy:, so I thought it'd be rude not to make a wide bodied Sileighty this time round. We picked up the kit yesterday and will be trial fitting it this week. More pics as they are taken
I took this in PX for the S15 and will be raping some drifty bits from it for the project
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Stripping200sx2.jpg
I've got a PowerFC on the way, DW coilovers to come as they were so good on the S15, and a V mount intercooler to complement the turbo I'm going to put on (and reduce lag and add a bit of bling)
A five stud hub conversion needs to go on so I can fit the wheels when I've ordered them from Julian at Rarerims.
Not a lot done to the car itself last week, as I've been a bit busy with Crimbo pissups most evenings. I have been prepping for the days off I booked last Monday and Tuesday...
I received some nice bits, body kit and carbon bonnet courtesy of EPRacing :worthy: and a great deal on Rotas from Julian at Rarerims :worthy:

Bruno came in for a marathon tyre fitting session, and was still :euge: waiting for the tyre to pop onto the rim on the 10th one :D  Hello mate :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/Ohhitsgoingtopop.jpg
We pushed the ex Ian Harrison shell in, so I could rape some more bits off it, namely the Kaaz diff and the UK spec handbrake setup.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/Subframechange4.jpg
Popped to Driftworks HQ for some of their fantastic Control System Coilovers as I was so impressed with the ones I put on the S15, and picked up a set of poly subframe bushes. I removed the old bushes and cleaned up the subframe in preparation for the 5 stud conversion, and removed the diff to check it over and change the oil. I treated myself to some new discs all round and re drilled them on Monday prior to fitting the subframe complete to the 180.
The cage is now ordered from Peter at Fabricage, and should be here after the Christmas holiday.
Hopefully there should be a big transformation on the car by Tuesday afternoon with 5 stud conversion and front 4 pots and DS2500s, steering angle increased and anti bumpsteer tierod ends, arches flared, bodykit fitted and new rims on. Suppose I'd best get it running too, in preparation for the VMIC and turbo

Hammered the chassis rail for clearance but with the ET12's, the rim is nowhere near. Maybe it'll help when more lock is provided from the other rods and anti bumpaclartsteer rod ends.

Just need to sort a top end rattle (suspect a dodgy lifter) and fit the rocker arm stoppers, then secure all the bodywork before the modding starts proper.
That's how it's sat at the moment. Some of the posts are past tense becasue I transferred the thread from Driftworks. It's taken two weeks so far but hopefully things will move a bit quicker once the hydraulic lifters have been replaced on Tuesday and I drive the car home to get more done over Christmas.
Quick work there Mitch! Looking good

Excellent project Mitch:thumbs:
Looks awesome mate...It went from a shell, to a shhhexy sil in no time at all. Its crazy how different (and better) it looks already
Cheers. I don't like to have my cars off the road for any length of time, so can't wait to get it out of the workshop and onto the road. That's why my "projects" don't take that long. However, I now have a spare rolling MoTd S13 shell so may do that one up in slow time...
about 5months was the downtime on mine, so yes, I am well impressed with the quick work you do... :)

I've had the s13 for years now and it's still not complete, i've not even driven it yet:cry:
Yep, think I may do that. I was thinking of keeping it in case I slam this one into something immoveable :wack:
I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the comments :)

Thanks :)
Right, been back down to work for a bit to sort out the rattle from the top end. Three of the hydraulic lifters were replaced, and while the cams were out, we dug into the spares locker and pulled out the pair of Tomei cams that I got with my old 180 (nearly 2 years ago :wack: )

Fired it up and the rattle is gone. Great success :D
While Bruno drilled and riveted the rear quarters on, I tidied the engine bay up a little and fitted the engine cutoff assembly.
Then it was time to fit the kit proper and drop the car a bit.

I dropped the front and fitted the DW rear coilovers while Bruno attacked the bodykit with a drill and angle grinder and some cableties, and it now kinda looks like this...

Next is to sort out the rear bumper. The sides fit, but the rear part is bent down in the middle and will be exchanged soon. It's probably a result of being stored with something on top of it. When I get time I'll be popping to EPRacing to swap it. The lights are just chucked on as Sam had the 180 lights back, and the replacement lights aren't here from NZ yet...

I'm just chuffed it was a correct diagnosis of the rattling

This might explain alot of rattles that peolpe put down to VVT.
Your not holding the kit on with cable ties?
Yes, though mine is non VVT so it wouldn't be that :D
As for cable ties-why not? The kit on my S15 was held on with cable ties. It holds the kit on at any speed and they break when you hit stuff instead of smashing the kit. Don't be a snob ;) :D

looking good mate  are little knockes painting it for you? and are they 18's?
Yes, Martin at Littleknocks will be painting it once the colour is decided. Dunno whether to go for Black, blue or red at the mo. Photoshoppers are welcomed :D

This is looking really great, i'd love to know what sort of budget you set aside to build a car like this on such a tight schedule. I guess you save a packet because you do most of the work yourselves?
Looking Good Mitch - i love reading your project threads - everything seems to move so quickly - u certainly dont hang about
:notworthy:notworthy awesome start Mitch  i reckon you should think outside of the box with paint.
In what way, mate? I don't want to go over the top because it is being built to be thrashed around track, and if it gets damaged I want it to be able to get it repaired without too much hassle/expense.
Tokyo Black-I wanted to build it for about £6-7k all in. If I didn't do the work myself, I wouldn't be able to afford it.

I'm thinking of this blue...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/RX8blue.jpg
Or possibly Millenium Jade or maybe red like the redtop rocker cover colour. I dunno :D
Anyway, while I mull that over, I picked up some 555 injectors yesterday, and received a Greddy T518Z turbo and an ECU to match it in the post. I'm debating whether to put on the Greddy as it matches the ECU, or the GT2871R that I was planning to put on it originally, and going for a remap. I'm just concerned about back up and rebuilds for the Greddy in case it goes tits up. Would someone like Owen Developments be able to do them or is there somewhere in UK that could? They don't appear to be a popular choice over here but are used quite a bit in Australia.

Andy-I know. Can't believe it took so long to get around to using them :D
The old one now resides on track in Norway
The engine died on New Year's Eve, and the car was recovered to Littleknocks and I left it there with Martin and borrowed his car so I could forget about it for a while.
On Thursday I fitted an S14 SR20DET with the help of a mate from work (Cheers Simmo ) and made up a loom to fit it to a UK S13, but I guess there are some differences somewhere...
I picked up the car from Littleknocks (Thanks Martin :worthy) on the transporter and brought it home for a bit, as I'm away from work for a couple of weeks and it needs a bit of elastictrickery doing to the loom because it isn't firing at the minute...

Got some nice crystal lights front and back and the V Mount to put on it when the enthusiasm returns, along with the bigger turbo and other bits to make it quick. I need to strip down the redtop SR before I decide which engine will remain long term, and so which ECU I'll use, which engine to fit the Nismo injectors to etc..
Just checking out some forgies and rods and MHGs on US Ebay
Right, it's been some time in the making, but it's now running again with an S14 blacktop VVT engine fitted. The swap itself took a night, but the loom and ECU has been a complete bastard. All the parts came out of the same running car, so I thought it would be safe to assume it was my lack of wiring talent that was the problem. Thanks to John Bennett on SXOC for possible suggestions on how to fix it  Must have removed, stripped and refitted the loom and ECU 10 times this week.

Cheers, I'm dragging it back to work to fit the Koyo rad and V mount intercooler setup, and tidy up a few bits next, then I'm getting the turbo rebuilt by Turbo Dynamics for a little peace of mind. It still works but I have a rebuild kit and want as much reliability as possible.

Few bits and bobs to go on. I was going to use the Koyo rad, but it has 6 or 7 pinholes in it, so needs to be repaired first, and will probably end up on another car I have planned.

I need to make some ally ducting to direct the air through the rad and IC and tidy it all up and test the fans, but that will be part of next Friday night's project when I get back from Cardiff and need to get it ready for Saturday. Still needs suspension levelling out and pointing the right way, brakes bleeding, handbrake adjusting, temp sensor fitting, boost controller fitting and harness fitting. Then load it all up and go play. That's the plan anyway...
Following that, once the turbo is back from Matt at Turbo Dynamics it'll be time to fit the injectors and Z32 and get it mapped for a bit more powers, and then tidy it up under the bonnet and inside and fit the cage.
And a few shots of how it looks at the minute...

I look forward to your projects every year and they always manage to surprise.
Standard of work is top notch (again).

It is, but I used the same setup on my last 180 and it worked just fine. We don't all need massive intercoolers, and I don't intend building a 500hp monster. The last one had gave good throttle response, which is more important to me than outright power.

fair play. What power are you looking for then
About 350hp and lbft if possible.
Here are a few pics from the practice day at Silverstone yesterday, courtesy of Ross I'Anson of www.doristars.com :notworthy
He's made it look as though I knew what I was doing but was actually pretty poor for the bulk of the runs I did. A few tweaks when Pete Barber was in the car helped a fair bit (cheers mate) and it should be fine with a bit of time in the seat :)

Sorry, it's no real secret as that sort of thing I find super gay. I'm getting a redtop SR that has a PFC D Jetro, GT2871R, injectors etc and is already mapped up by a bit of a legend and it's apparently very very nice to drive. And no you can't have a go:D

Engine's out now (again), brakelines and steering UJ have been replaced, engine bay is tidied up and now eagerly awaiting the new lump. It will hopefully be picked up and dropped in by mid week, as it's not out of the old car yet.
Well, the ex Greg Gush's Silvia engine is now dropped in...

Tomorrow will find the PowerFC fitted, along with the catch tank and Walbro to replace the GTR pump and a couple of other bits and bobs and it's off to Weston Performance to get it checked over and the mapping tweaked on the rolling road.
Hopefully all will be well and we'll be out to play at Santapod on Sunday, and then get the safety gear in to get it ready for round 1 of BDC. Then it's practice, practice and more practice.
Great build sir, top notch, one of my favourite sil80's

I think G is making it sound more special than it is possible as he normally hates SR's lol
but I don't know if its had more specail bits added than just being rebuilt or something.
its a non VVT isn't it Mitch? ( can't see pics at work otherwise I could answer my own question :wack:)

07-03-2008, 10:24
Yeah, non VVT raaabish, Its just amazing, super solid powers, the car it was in was amazing to drift, so should be uber cool in the Mitch mobile
Arr. Cool. I now own 2 of these engines. I'm starting a collection. :wack:
Mitch! Is it going to stay like this, now? Are you keeping this one?
There's nothing super special about the engine, but it produces decent power and torque and delivers it nicely. G likes it so much because he's been brainwashed to believe CA's are good :D
I had it mapped last night at Weston Performance by Greg, who also hard wired the fuel pump in, and switched to a Walbro because the GTR one was making it run lean. I'm very glad I took it down there to get done and checked over, rather than assume it would be fine just to chuck it in and run it because it wouldn't have lasted long.
On the dyno it made 325 powers and torques, which is lower than some of the figures you see bandied about for a similar spec, but I'll be more than happy if it drives as well as I think it will on the road
I finished fitting the ancillaries before taking it down to Weston. I started to sort heat protection for some of the pipework because my last 180 caught fire at Santa Pod. I want to get some heatproof shielding for the wiring and fire extinguisher tube, but for now there's just a bit of braiding and sleeving.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/Heatprotection.jpg
I took out the Ikeya Formula shifter as it will require adjustment to get to work properly, and I haven't got time to mess about with it and adapt the handbrake for easier access...I need to find a standard one by tomorrow because the other one was fitted to the purple car  For now, Stanley has come to the rescue with a big ass screwdriver from my toolbox :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/Cheapgearlever.jpg
The pump was hardwired in last night. I'll be tidying the wiring up this morning, as it was on the dyno when it was done, so was a bit hurried.

Yeah, they are the same fitment on the CA box too.
How do they work!? Do they change the shift into a sequential style from the H-pattern?
A load of cams and ratchets and ting inside which make the backwards/forwards into a H pattern.

Dobergoose. He's a member on here that I bought the shifter from. Anyway, it's off now as I didn't really get on with it. And it's sold, before anyone asks :D
I popped into EPRacing yesterday and picked up a new anodised catch tank and snap off boss security lock. I was wondering about the best way to secure the car before, as the diskloc isn't the most effective with the removable boss in place. I have my own idea on making my own boss non universal, but a little extra can't hurt.
They are so new, the prices weren't properly finalised, but ring Jeffrey at EPRacing on 01509 844300 if you fancy one

Yes mate
I'll update soon when I load pics but when you saw me I was on the way to Santa Pod to the new garagemac setup for my alignment sortings. Now the wheels are pointing the right way, the car drifts fantastically and I had a great day at Teesside in round 1 of the BDC, despite the weather in the evening in which there was a bit of using the force to drive :wack:
Right then, bit of an update as I've been a little lazy lately
I stripped it for the cage fitting festivities

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/Rollcageandinterior3.jpg
Managed to keep the glovebox and the dash is quite tidily cut for the cage, but there are a few bits to still tidy up which I'll get round to when everything else is done, Maybe.
Then went to Teesside to do some of this at Round 1 of BDC...Which is the whole point of the exercise really. Good times. Massive thanks to Jamie at Garagemac for sorting my alignment and Greg at Weston for the mapping of the PowerFC.
It was a touch damp in the afternoon/evening though...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/Newrockercover.jpg
So this is how it sits at the minute. I still need to get tyres sorted for round 2 and also wire my fan switch into the cabin until I can get a fan controller. I'll do more to it once my gas course is out of the way.
Little update time.
The season's battering of the car saw the clutch slave cylinder fail up at Teesside, and Polo kindly lent me his as his car was dead that round :notworthy Apart from that, the car has been pretty much spot on and the only mod really required is to sort the interface unit that goes between the seat and steering wheel. That starts tomorrow at Teesside.
As it is, I thought I'd start to get it ready for next season to save the normal rush in the new year and got the engine remapped as I thought there was more to come from it for the mods it has. I have heard so many people bang on about how good Steve Sadler is, I thought I'd try him for myself and I'm glad I did. He explained everything as he went and spent a good couple of hours on tweaking the PowerFC and trying various things. The manual boost controller was the limiting factor but I've picked up an electronic one now and will be booking it in for final touches once it's fitted and I can get the time to drive down there. The car feels so much faster now, so I'm really looking forward to getting the last bits done. Next up is uprating the drive train to take the extra powers, and I'll probably be going for the Z32 upgrade.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/MappingMotorworx5.jpg
He printed me a load of bits out but it was a bit damp on the drive home. Trying to keep it straight was a mission :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/mitchyc/Sileighty%20for%202008/MappingMotorworx.jpg
So huge thanks to Mister Sadler of www.fctuning.com for his efforts there, and I'll soon be calling again to get the final tweaks tweaked
The car was bashed about a bit at Lydden Hill, so thought I'd better make it look a bit more presentable. Jeffrey and Leon of EP Racing.co.uk (http://www.epracing.co.uk) had run out of Silvia front bumpers so it was mend and make do up until now. I've had lots of thoughts about what to do for next season, including the fairly obvious 1JZ conversion  and also looking for something else (surprise surprise:D) but decided on improving the car and just getting some seat time to try and keep up with everyone else. Around 12th in BDC was better than I hoped, but I'd like to improve upon it next time.
More power is now in hand, so while I look out for gearbox conversion parts I thought it could do with a new look. I replaced all my 18 inch rims with a couple of sets of 17" Rota GTR's, which may appear a retrograde step but everyone is running Torques and 18 inch tyres were becoming more difficult to get hold of, so it seemed a good idea. My tyre pile is growing, thanks to a local lad (no names, but thank you :)) that digs out 17's for me while picking up his 18's
I noticed on a thread on SXOC that a guy in Derby was struggling with a new graphics and printing company so I approached him for a new theme for the car. I figured we could help each other out, as I needed a new look and he wants to get his work noticed and was very keen to do a drift car.
I know lots of people talk about urban camo but not too many actually go for it, so after consulting a couple of people and hassling Jord for PS skills, I thought I'd take the plunge. I'd like to thank Jordan for his help, although it came out a lot different to the original ideas. What I'm saying is if you hate it it's not his fault, it's mine.
Anyway, pictures paint a thousand words so here they are. Be nice. In fact no, be honest. It's not quite finished yet as we ran out of time yesterday and will be doing a bit more today. Let me know what you think.
