http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/damodevilsson/my%20200sx/DSC00186.jpg

so on monday about dinner time i got the missis down to sit in the drivers seat/turn over as i changed a few setting and had 2hours trying to get the engine to start of which i got it to fire up but no idle at all after yet more talks with phatbob about injector settings!!! :(

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/damodevilsson/my%20200sx/DSC00191-1.jpg
the missis looking a little sleepy bless her x came down to help me on the s13 even tho she had been at work all night!!! thanks sweetie

today i got down and started again from the top with the basic check for fuel. yep check for spark only 3 out of 4! (DOH!) i have killed a coil driver some how :( phone call to phatbob wiring changed to new driver then the right ingition and injector firing order (DOH!) inputted............. yes at last she fire and idled for about 25secounds at a time few more setting change and she now idle a little high and loud due to a hole in the exhust were the ego sensor needs to go gut she idles :)

sorry but the camphone had to be used and i know :ghey: vems :Plug:

the ca ran for a few 1000 miles and was estimated at 430hp was a little laggy but went well but on inspection of the engine the thrust face had started to go on the block and crack so i sold the ca on as well as the gauges, vems and injectors...... etc it was a sad day :(

so what did i do next could not leave my poor s13 just say there with out an engine...

i then got myself an sr redtop gearbox the lot from nick the doctors (driftworks) old s13 and an hks fan controller

SR20DET with
HKS Pistons
HKS Cams
HKS headgasket
Gearbox
Rocker stoppers
HKS GT-SS Turbo kit
HKS Stainless Manifold
Really nice really nosiey exhaust with SARD Cat

so its all in now and im just waiting on 3 hoses to turn up for the water pipe work and intercooler and then im ready to rock. im booked in with h-dec on the 31st for mapping of the safc 2 and then the 1st im getting the diff welded

pictures to come

update

well after a few small problems i got the car down to h-dev to see jez for mapping. turned up late dude to traffic  sorry bud

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I am so happy it runs so sweet now...

Jez service is fantastic what a great bloke after spending about 30min sorting abit of wiring and the fuel presure for me. thanks again.

once jez had got his gear installed onto the car for mapping off we went....

jez did the WOT stuff 1st after just a few runs the s13 was feeling alot better mid rev range and it was pulling stronge :) so on to the part throtle stuff  afew runs again slowly up the revs etc...

on the way down the s13 was a bit of a pig to drive very jerky and what sounded like missing on part throtle...

all this has now gone it feels competely different alot easer to dive now. i cound not recomend jez / h - dev anuff :Plug:

my sr its not the fastest by for but im running stock injectors etc and only running 0.8bar of boost but dam im loving it! pulls from low down in the revs its great to beable to drive it again

so tomorrows jobs before traxs...

welding to do under the car
make a bracket to hold the rad in place
ducting for intercooler rad behind bonnet
fitting of apex coilovers 8/6 springs
give the car a clean... (its very very well and truely needed)

and if i get time weld the diff

damo

Damo
13-09-2007, 23:05
well me and jud got done.....

some of the welding
coilovers fitted
rad bracket made and fitted
some sheat steal/alloy to direct air flow into intercooler/rad behind bumper done.

well the s13 just about lasted traxs...... im was only runing 0.6bar on track but still hunted a few people down :)

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/damodevilsson/traxs%202007/IMG_1192.jpg

unlucky for my tho...

the last stud at the back of the head holding the exhuast manifold on stapped.
the pipe for the idle control valve blow off
a pipe to the heater inside the car all so came off :(
im now in truoble with a possable cooling problem as i was running a little hotter than normal on the way home. once home something died on the electrics too...

its all fun and games with 200sx init lol im sure she will be back up and running soon

Well the plan is to entre time attack 2008 (allready sent off my form)

i have inlisted tim200 for good or bad to help me prep the s13 (thanks tim)

looking at the regs and the cars from this years comp its going to cost me about £3200 just to make the 1st event and have a car that will hopfully be able to keep up with the slowest ones :wack:

so thats:

race suit/safety clothing for myself.
a cage
1 liter fire extinguisher
getting the s13 uder the 105db noise limit
new alloys and tyres (for track use only)
entry fee based on last years fee + £80-£200 for a timing transponder rent/buy

so the list start to grow on things i need to do...

i need to lose some waight as does the 13 lol so sorted it with tim for next friday (14/9/7) we are going to strip out as much as we can.

to continue the wiaght loss im/we are going to cut all the frame work off from under the stock bonnet.
this should bring it down to that of an carbon fiber one, not forgetting the bonnet pins and then vent to help cool the engine/stiffen the bonnet a little.

The exhaust.

man is it loud i mean i would make no differance if i took it off  so i need to get hold of a new backbox and silancer too.

any ideas?

im in the process of re-booking the car in with h-dev for a power upgrade this should see me between 290-320hp depending on how much boost we can run with the stock afm and wrx 440cc injectors. hoping for 1.1-2bar

Next on the list is rust we have found a little under the car so tim with my help (i.e me making tea for him/wiping his ass to cut this rot out and weld it back up again. will also try to get tim to do me a little seam welding too

once this is sorted the s13 will go for its cage fitting. (still talking to afew people about wear to get this done and costs at min)

brakes????

at the min im running:-
front s14 calipers with the 315mm convertion and stock pads
rear 300zx setup with stock pads
Goodridge Braided Hoses all round
5.1 dot brake fluid

all tho this was ok for traxs. i really needs to change it to keep up with the rest of the s13. to what im unsure as of yet but hoping for some help here so watch this space

aerodynamics

(picture taken at traxs)
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/damodevilsson/traxs%202007/IMG_1192.jpg

i dont think im too far behind with the setup i have. i am however thinking and most likely will do. Is what sm and yak have done with there s13.

refitting the stock face lift front bumper with spliter and massive canards made from plastic stuff (dont know the name of it at min)

well thats as far as i have got with my plans at the min and im sure there will be lots of updates to come

but but but we have rust..............

at the rear of both driver and passanger floors pans so monday it will gets cut out and new sheet weldered in.

we also hope to get a little seam welding done around the rear turrets. then with a little clean inside, some paint it should be ready for the cage to go in on the 2nd of next month over 4days at pro cage

how come you're using a welded diff?

i was having problems on track with the s14 diff i have on with one wheels spinning up so could not get the power down and so losing corner exit speed

i cant afford a 1.5 or 2 way diff so its down to shim s14 diff or weld the open s13 diff....

im going to try the weldered one out for a bit if i cant get on with it will swop in the s14 one back in with it shimed

i thought you were building the car to go round corners quickly, the only good the welded diff will give is to a pikey drifter, and going round corners sideways is only faster when used on gravel etc when rallying,

there is a very very true saying, ''the most boring looking laps are the fastest'' and thats because there is no time power or effourt spent going sideways or smoking the tyres on launches etc,

i would personally just get the vlsd sorted and throw the mig spec rubbish back to the trampdrift crowd

docwra
19-11-2007, 13:01
A welded diff is better than an open diff for getting the power down, despite what m.d.'s mates have obviously told him ;) If you cant afford a 1.5 way or shimmed up S14 one its probably your best bet, although Id imagine with 500bhp it might prove to be a bit of a handful :D :D

EDIT: and its not just for "pikey drifters" either - a 3 way diff is a bloody good piece of equipment on a drift car, and short of spending £400+ on a 2-way about the best option available.

19-11-2007, 22:01

I kind of agree with what MD is saying, even if I don't agree with how he is saying it....

A welded diff is fine for straight line traction or for drifting where you need equal torque distribution and both wheels spinning together. For a track car, I would expect it to introduce a few problems.

Because both wheels are trying to turn at the same speed, any time you corner you are effectively forcing the tyres to slide. That may be the inside wheel going fast, the outside slow, or a bit of both. In any case, this is bad news for the tyres, since it is introducing unneccesary heat and wear into them, so they will tend to 'go off' much quicker. It will also upset the balance of the car - there is likely to be initial oversteer on turn in, probably followed by understeer as you initially apply the power and then finally oversteer again as the wheels break traction.

IMO, for track work you would actually be better off with an open diff than a welded one, and try and improve the traction by reducing weight transfer away from the inside wheel.

But as you know, the best way is a proper LSD.:)

Damo

yeah i really want a 2 or 1.5 way diff but just not go the funds :(

M.D.
22-11-2007, 21:52
cliff has a much much better way of explaining what im getting at,

just he explains it where as i will just say that a welded diff is just balls, which it is unless your drifting,

if your spinning a wheel on the inside edge then ease off the power a little, you wont go any slower as your not wasting your time spinning,

that saying is not what my mates have told me, but people who acctually know what they are talking about, so believe what you want docwra

Again, Im talking from personal experience, where I have found the welder to be a lot more predictable and at least to feel faster than an open diff, but I dont argue with Cliff - I can totally see whay he's saying about tyre temps mind you.

In a shocker though, I do agree a 1.5 way would be better than a 2-way, but then a 2-way is a shitload better than a welder, open or LSD

yeah you carry on thinking that mate if it gets you through the day

but you have a valid point, it may feel faster, in much the same way as a rock hard car feels like its going round the corner quicker than a softer car, when infact its more that the harsh feedback etc from a hard car makes it feel faster even if it isnt,
common thing that boy racers in there saxos etc get when they lower the car to the bump stops, feels like its on rails but infact the car would have gone round the corner as fast with the car standard,
that was the feeling i had WHEN I DROVE A CAR WITH A WELDED DIFF

Thats what I use. They work well :)
I've got a 1.5 way to try as well - just got to get my car running.

In theory the Torsen is great for high grip tarmac. The problems come when you need to ride curbs or on split mu surfaces, where the diff suddenly becomes open due to a loss of resistance on one wheel which the gears need in order to work. - Have you guys found that problem at all?

I ended up getting a kaaz 2 way for the simple reason that it was available at a good price:) A 1.5 or even 1 might be better (in terms of helping predictable turn in on the overrun), but there are pro's and con's to all the types.

However, I'd stand by the fact that for track work, a welder is probably last choice, since by design it is trying to make at leat one wheel slide/spin when cornering, and thats not really what you want for a track car IMO.

Good laps times are about keeping the average speed high - to do that you need to have a balance of everything - acceleration, braking and handling for mid corner speed. Its nice having loads of power to accelerate you quickly, but if you have to go slowly round the coners you will then need even better brakes to bring you down to the lower speed required at each corner. Its alla bout improveing EVERYTHING in proportion. If one aspect is left behind, the whole thing falls over.

Anyway, don't mean to sound depressing. Keep up the good work - I know the amount of effort it takes to do this kind of thing, so well done for getting out there and having a go:nod:. Once you've started you can develop the car from there

Yup - which is why I'm going to try the 1.5 way. On tight corners my car tries to lift the inside rear wheel, which effectively leaves you with bugger all traction as you apply power to come out of the corner.

This might not be a problem next year as I'll be running harder springs, so hope fully less body roll.

sorry for the crapy pictures used the cam fone :( welding is alot better than it looks

So tim today finished off the welding needed for the cage :D

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/damodevilsson/my%20200sx/DSC00181-2.jpg

We bolted it all down and so its now all in and finished, we then started / finished off cleaning the inside for painting and then painted......

Please note we did not prep at all on the inside justed cleaned it so the paint would take. Its not the best paint job in the car but it looks clean and so im happy.

pictures taken at half way doing the back of car so more to come tomorrow

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/damodevilsson/my%20200sx/DSC00182-1.jpg
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/damodevilsson/my%20200sx/DSC00183-1.jpg

Next the seats and harness will go back in and then the rest of the wiring new switch pannel, the dash back in job done in the car :D

That leaves body work to sort and paint, engine and vems to fit / wire in. exhuast to sort then its start /run in engine get graphics sorted.

Then get the s13 mapped up and its done :)

shit so much to do yet

Looks like the same cage in Yaks car. Are you going to weld the front feet of the cage to the mounting brackets on the floor? We drilled them and welded on some captive nuts to the brackets before welding the brackets to the floor.

This had allready been done to the brackets 1 for the top and 2 on the side for bolting it down so we just welded the brackets to the floor

The cage is from the DW group buy fabricage i think it came from

Don't see the major problem here? Your gonna be in the mid to high revs or most of the time anyway, as it is a track car. You should never really get affected by lag that much.

thanks mate  yeah as the day went on i started to get more trust in the s13

ben i was a bit out with what i was saying, we have done some data logging and getting full 1.4bar at 4400, still i think we can get it down under 4000 tho and hope to push 500hp need to do some working on with inlet temps as we are seeing a power saping 47c :(

Damo
07-04-2008, 20:45
OK....... So its 6weeks to the next race at knockhill (18th of may) and we have a bit of work to do on the s13 before then:-

fit new engine and start running

get wheel alignment done

make / fit new fuel system

get new exhuast system made / fitted

start working on aero desgin / fit rear diffuser front spliter

get new engine mappped and hopfully dynoed

M.D.
07-04-2008, 21:01
4.5k really isnt that laggy when your on it,

mine hits a bar at exactly 4.5k and takes off, and as long as you rev it properly :wack: then i get no lagg between gear changes at all,

and your turbo is bigger (and more expensive lol) than mine, id say your doing really well there.

where 1.8 bar of boost will kick in will be interesting tho lol

Damo
14-04-2008, 21:31
well the fitting of the new engine is going well.... moving the intercooler up front due to the 47c inlet temp when mapping and the 52c inlet temp we got on track the intercooler became an interwarmer at donington as it was warm to touch

yep thats so ture....

well....

The db-power engine fitting is going slowly due to lack of time :( all tho i did have it running for a few min to bleed the water system to find i had a fuel leek so off with the inlet manifold to sort that......

BUT then phill from archenemy.co.uk and his mate poped up to sort my rear arches out thanks very much

i got the lip rolled flat and a small 10mm flare giving me 15mm more room so i hope the new alloys and tires will fit one i have them now

back to the engine :D

sorted the fuel leek. was the o ring on injector 4, i primed the system with the inlet off and no fuel poring out... back on with the inlet and thats as far as i have got... dont think i will get to do anymore now for 2weeks so its going to be close again for knockhill. think the mapping will be cut sort and boost left at 1.4bar as the alignment/aero is more important at min

the damage was not to bad. the plastic outer was messed up and now useless. the tyre had only gone through 6 different wire outers and nothing a bit of tape could fix just need to make up something to keep the wiring up and out of the way now

should get this done tomorrow and will also do the 1st oil change. had the engine running about an hour now and not been to soft on it :D

well today i had a very not so nice drive up to DCMS to see Graham for the alignment.

all i can say, how the hell did i get round donnington in one peace the car is crap to drive jumps all over the place :(

BUT with a massive THANKS to Graham @ DCMS its now a dream and i had a great drive back.

so i ran out of time for the 1st round of TA so we did the alignment by eye and it was as taken by Graham

settings are passanger then drivers side

Front
camber = -1.2deg / -3deg
toe = 1/2 in / 3 in

Rear
camber = -3deg / -2.2deg
toe = 1/2 in / 5 in

:wack:

there now a much better setting and all the same :D

just go at oil change, mapping, diff, front splitter to fit/do before friday night now

well been out mapping and hit the 8000rpm limit a few timesssss.......... stupid dad driving and me mapping he was to busy looking and keeping the boost at the right level forgot about the rev counter :(

but its all good engines running great (touch wood). will do some more mapping tomorrow as we was getting a little bit of det at 1.6bar all tho the water injection will sort that out i only want to use it to keep egt's down.

still at 11.6 -11.3 afr at the riched point the egt's are 853c so thats good may even take a little fuel out yet will see how it goes once i take a degre out of the timing where the det is tomorrow

Fake Ben Taylor
30-05-2008, 20:58
brilliant :) hows it feel at the higher boost? still 1.4 left ;)

Damo
30-05-2008, 21:10
Feels faster that my old sr. you get a right boot at 3800-4300 the hp dubbles there easy, i must be near if not over 400hp now, well i hope so lol

running more timing at 1.4bar than the old engine so thats good news too 9der vr's 12.25deg but it was a very safe map on the old sr

my dad, when we give it wot 1st, 2nd and into 3rd my dad change gear at just over 5000rpm pooping it a little lol :D i cant wait to finish mapping tomorrow if i get time will go to 1.8bar and see what thats like

Yeah its poop,

Well engine strip down done and mains 4-3 and 1 have spun but every thing elss looks good.

Thats what i get for using the shells and crank out of my old sr into the new one. Did hope it would be ok just to get me past round 3 of ta.

Have a new crank and acl race shell to go in so will be running by this weekend yey then its just a matter of sorting a trip to apt for sortting out/looking over my map that i have done

The crank the main shells spun on should just poslish up. im going to read up about the redtop head flowing better than the vvt head. if its true im going to rebuild my old sr with a high spec as to hopefully get 500hp and a 3700rpm power band for next years racing

well as some know from reading the thread in the s14 tech section my stock liners are fudged

Oh crap

Got a call today as the rest of the engine got stripped down and the liners are..........
yep fudged.

"I have 0.004" - 0.006" out of shap at the top and number 3 is cracked. It looks like number 3 has had hold of the pistion as it has marks on the side of it too"

Anyway, I have yet another sr20det to go in again  all built. just needs the box putting on and then dropping into the engine bay and hooking up

3rd time the charm, i hope

All is not lost peeps.:)
We have the car with us now (collected it on Sat) and took engine out yesterday. :)
All is in hand and we are confident we can find the prob/s and easily sort. We think we know where some of the noise was coming from (2 very loose bolts going down to the 'zorst causing major blowing )- will leave the specifics to Dan, who I beleive will post up later (when he has a mo. inbetween working).
Full strip down/rebuild in the pipeline. So watch this space for news
Damo - like I said earlier, all is not lost:no: AT ALL ;)

Had a chat with dan tonight he found that the crank pully was not on properly and it was hitting the oil housing taken a nice bit out of it, also buggered the woodruff key... this was the main problem with the loud knocking we had. (all i can say is sorry dan, i fitted that bit when my dad rebuilt the bottom end :( )

Will wait to here what the rest of the strip down brings as sm said i did bugger a cam.... yet again my own falt :( but then this is why the car is now with dan far far away from me :wack:

dan is also going to fit a new pump for us to as the one in there now we think is ill

Better late than never :wack:

Anyhow picked up Damo's car Saturday morning and towed it back to Hemel.

Started work on it Sunday and with help from Spirit took the engine out:-

http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55733&stc=1&d=1215790975

All out
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55735&stc=1&d=1215790975
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55736&stc=1&d=1215790975
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55734&stc=1&d=1215790975

Then over the course of this week started stripping the engine.

One of the 1st things I found while undoing the clutch was that the front pulley bolt was loose, which has eaten half of the woodruff key, and has also scored the oil pump :( not a biggy as we have a few spares :)

I then proceeded to take the head off an inspect, the head seems ok but some of the cam caps are scored so will be changing the head regardless I think :nod

This left the bottom end.

I started with the Mains, all the mains were scored but what was very noticable was number 3 main bearings were worn and squished

http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55737&d=1215790974
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55738&stc=1&d=1215791385
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55739&stc=1&d=1215791385

I then tried to find out what had caused this problem, Swarf was a possibility but then why weren't all the mains like this. I put the crank into the lathe at work and used a dial guage to work out if the crank was true or not.

Results are as follows (from front pulley to flywheel):-

no1:- 8 thou out on the mains journal
no2:- 6 thou out on the mains journal
no3:- 6 thou out on the mains journal
no4:- 6 thou out on the mains journal
no5:- 8 thou out on the mains journal

So pretty much a bent crank :(

This then made me think what bent the crank, the one thing I did notice whilst removing the crank is that number 3 conrod cap was hard to get off the journal, and thats when I noticed this:-
http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=55740&stc=1&d=1215792137

If you have a look where the red highlighted piece is, you will see that there is a dent in the crank which goes overhead of the journal. This could explain the bent crank and why number 3 is completely shagged :(

Well after a long hard think and battle this year.............................................. ...........

I have decided to give the mission keep up with sm and yak a big fat FAIL. Nothing new there!!! It means i'm not going to run in the last TA round and have just about sorted a deal with some one elss for my place in the last round thanks to rob from TA passing his info on to me.

This does mean how ever I can sell some shit on and get some bits needed for the plans for next year. So I have sold pending payment my injectors and clutch

Thanks to mister Daniel san @ SRB doing some cheap deals and with the new idea to make this thing lighter than a lightened s13 (if thats ever possible) I have order a few more bits to this project of never ending pocket depth :wack:

Max Street Lite carbon clutch and flywheel kit
FPR doors and vented bonnet

Weight target is 1150kg or less as kev's came in at 1182kg with allot of stuff pulled from it so I’m hoping by doing the same and pull a little more I can got to this

My main problem has been reliability as 99% of people know from this project thread. This has been down to bad luck, me being stupid and me being stupid some more. For this reason I have decided to once the s13 is back together to go back to the stock ecu etc setup for a little bit to try get some of the reliability I so desperately need so I will end up with a setup like the hd stage 3a

Every one please cross you fingers and wish me some luck for the time ahead as i’m starting to run out of time and money for the s13 now with me and Linda getting married next year.

I would also like to thank

MY gorgeous missis Linda for putting up with all my car crap

Tim_s13 for all his help building paint and welding done of the shell.

Dan and Spirit @ DBpower for all there help and support / sponsorship. If it was not for them I could see myself stripping the s13 for parts to help fund the wedding but its now has a very small budget for next year instead

:Plug:

So lets hope i find the much needed reliability over the winter but if not i guess it will look good any how :wack:

Best of luck!

thanks bud, yeah im going to try keep it simple no body kits etc well thats the plan....

Good engine/turbo/fueling and ecu setup hopefully around 500hp (h-dev doing all this work)
Big brakes - DB-power setup TBC
GTST gearbox setup from DB-Power (testing this)
Front spliter
Rear wing
Good coilovers hopefully (depends on budget)

and then go from there with the aim to get it all running setup this year with loads of seat time and then try it out in timeattack 2010 i dont expect the car back from jez untill the end of feb
