While your at it fella flare the rear arches so you can push the wheel rim out flush with the bodywork, thats the only thing missing

I guess what colour your going to choose is a surprise...

I'm trying to think what would suit it the most. If it were me I'd be thinking

Gunmetal

Black

White with black roof.

But then I'm rubbish at thinking of any different colours, that above is pretty much my full imaginative spectrum of colours when it comes to cars :wack:

yeah, it will eventually have flared front wings and wide rear quarters but the budget for this spray is £50 and week of my time!

more than likely go 5stud when i fit wider panels, will post up pics when all done

I'm guessing he works at a paintshop if it's 'another' DIY respray and gonna cost just 50 quid. I'm hoping so anyway :D

no, i aint no pro, just fancy changing it. dont mind doing it myself until i can afford a professional spray job.

brows are off, yes ive painted before but still have much to learn (i sprayed it yellow), and yes, i'll try to post some pics close up when done. crappy cold weather doesnt help out much for a garage spray job though.

i'm a believer in "fortune favours the brave"!!!

here's a few pics anyway, from which you will probably spot the colour?!!
i wouldnt normally spray the panels all seperate becuse there's a chnace the shades may turn out different, but crap weather, time and space all had a part to play - meaning it was easier to strip and paint individually.

sorted that sneakey hidden bit of rust too!

Fair play mate, I think a lot of people wrongly put down DIY paint jobs.

If you take your time with the prep and are prepared to take some time wet flatting & polishing afterwards (unless you have a very good gun finish ;) ) then just as good results as a pro can be had. Most bodyshops wet flat & polish anyway.

Is that a std red, or metallic? What happened to the bonnet (blotches)?

As quite a few panels on my S13 are getting painted I keep wondering about repsraying the whole thing, but haven't really got room to do the actual rolling chassis anywhere.

I presume your garage is quite large?

Micraplay
23-07-2007, 11:21
garage is large enough, when tidy i can get the car in there with both doors wide open, its a double garage with a toilet/was basin in one corner so only fit 1 car in it. plus its laden with tools, equipment, golf clubs etc..!!

thats the bonnet after only 1 coat. havent bother to prime this time because there's already som much paint on the car, just about 4 coats of the red. the blotches are just some darker patches showing throught the paint while its thin.

it neither the standard red, nor metallic. not brave enought to attempt the metallic yet, maybe next summer.
the paint is 1.5ltr of Ford Venetian Red (almost an orange look to it in the sunshine) with 1ltr of straight Magenta added to it. It was a custom mixed job. i already had the Venetian but wanted more quantity and so went down the paint shop and between me and the paint guy mixed this colour which is a really nice deep rouge now. i like it  its not a million miles away from the standard red colour though.

nothing in those pictures has been flatted or polished yet either!

i have based my decision to go for this colour on this picture:

THat pic of the s13 is a surprisingly dark red, is the red sprayed over a black surface? Yours is coming out light - until you get a few coats of course..

Micraplay
23-07-2007, 16:53
i have no idea about the other one, its just a pic i have.

and im not trying to recreate that exact colour, i just like the general look of the car. the red im using is quiet a bright shade, but quite rich i would say, but you're right, nowhere near as dark as that one

how do you manage keeping crap out of the paint in a normal garage fella? curious :)

WideboyS14
26-07-2007, 03:48
good effort mate. from those pics it appears your not getting enough paint down, adjust the settings of your gun. or maybe your moving it too quick?? with the bonnet you should spray it with it hanging vertically, not flat. hose your floor down aswell, would help eliminate dust blowing off it. if you spend more time getting the correct finish the first time, would save you the elbow grease of flatting and polishing. good stuff though!

As partly covered by HippoDyl, you can help to eliminate dust, etc by wetting the floor & walls in the area you are working in, then use a tack rag between paint stages.

Any small bits can be de-nibbed at a later date.

Micraplay
27-07-2007, 18:07
i do hose the floor down but it dries pretty fast. take some more pics when i get chance, thanks for the tips. i use tack cloths too.

why should i hang the bonnet to paint? i worked on the opinion that id spray everything in the position it would sit on the car.

no you're right, it still needs a wet flat and polish. its for sale at the right price if anybody is interested?!!

hanging it prevents less dust landing on it = less time wet flattening and polishing it.

what paint is it 2pk or cellose?

Micraplay
27-09-2007, 12:13
i used 2pk. already had compressor equipment and spray gun etc from last summer when i painted it yellow. didnt bother priming cos there is a shit load of paint already on the body, just gave it about 4 coats of red after sanding it down. already had 1.5ltrs of paint too, just had that mixed with another litre of a different colour to get that shade.

what do you use to polish after flatting? Ive toyed with the idea of spraying mine before as I have a compresser and a large workshop to use but have been put off by not knowing how to polish it up to get a nice shiny finish.

Its best to mop it with g3 cutting compound, and then polish it

M.D.
30-09-2007, 12:32
i painted my wings with rattle cans and then flatted it back with 2000 and polished back with G3,

was like a mirror, its harder to keep a deep shine unless you laquer it but ill do that next time,

i painted a whole R5 a few months ago, with cans again, it takes ages but cost less than 30 quid lol,

and with a flat and polish it looks ace too, more than good enough for the car it was on lol, so ill be taking mine into work soon to do the same, can flair the arches and get rid of the hundreds of dings all over it then lol,

the red looks better than the yellow imo mate

Fook me that is a top job for rattle cans, well done sir.

I have a front and rear bumper and 2 doors to do soon.

Did you bother to lacquer or do you spray, 2000 grit, G3 and then polish and leave?

M.D.
03-10-2007, 21:01
you can get as good a finish from a can as you can from a gun,

its all paint,

its just you cant get an ''out the gun'' finish from cans so it needs polishing to get the same finished result,

this was my recent rattle can finish looks like

Micraplay
04-10-2007, 22:31
yes, do tell. . . . .!

Jagman
04-10-2007, 23:43
Yes,I'd like to know as well....given that rattle can paint is very thin and ,because of the poor finish, you would need to put on loads to have enough to cut and polish to a good shine I've just done a mental guestimate of 20-30 500ml cans of topcoat for a complete respray...and a decent little compressor, gun and kit only costs 100 notes...and rattle cans £10 each?
Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense....

jim-rambo
05-10-2007, 02:20
to get it to polish up like that you just need to put a few gd coats of lacour on. if u paint a few ruff coats let it tack off for a few mins (gives a gd base for heavy coat to stick to) then heavy coat but not to mad dont want runs.... wait to dry... get the 1800 wet n dry out use abit of fairy liquid
(helps to stop putting deep scratches in with the edges of the paper)
give a decent flat back then get the polishing mop out with some G3 cutting paste get yaself a spray bottle with some water in
(you need water or you'll burn the paint straight off)
keep the speed down low and get polishing......

ok, so what the hell is a polishing mop?

Hallsy
05-10-2007, 14:13
Guys, do a search in the exterior section, there have been loads of posts on cutting paint. Failing that take a trip over to detailing world if you want to learn how to get paint looking like glass :)

A mop is a term for a rotary polisher, these can remove a lot of paint with coarse cutting products if not used with care/experience so are best avoided for a first timer.

Many beginners use a random orbit polisher such as the Porter Cable 7424(iirc) as it is harder to burn through the paint due to the random action, however a rotary is more effiecient.

M.D.
06-10-2007, 18:32
there was no laqure on mine at all

just make sure you use plenty of paint, i used 2 cans on each wing to get enough paint on,
then flatted back with 2000 wet and dry, and finally polished up with g3 cutting compund, going to do the whole car some day soon

Micraplay
07-10-2007, 01:48
what did you use to polish with the g3?? exact spec of machine if you can?? i have an orbital polisher but it doesn't seem to cut paint because it aint powerfull enough. willing to buy the right tool/equipment if i need to to make it look good

Hallsy
08-10-2007, 09:06
Did you not read my post above???

For an orbital the most commonly used is a Porter Cable 7424.

As for Roatary I'm not 100% sure on models but decent ones such as Makita, rather than a cheap non-brand model.

its just a rotary one from the cheapest place i could find lol, dont know what make or anything but its a right cheap bag of poo, but its only got to spin a polishing cloth so not to bad, plenty of guts but noisy
