It's about time I went public with my project so here you are, this thread has been simmering in the mod pod for the last 2 and a bit years, I've stripped all of the other waffle from the thread to leave my posts with piccies in them.

Not many words, but the pictures are worth 1000's of them.

In order to see the linked pictures you need to looking at the thread from www.sxoc.com, a link to the thread in .com land is here...

I bought a fecking huge oil cooler a while back, some may remember, it's a 40 row beast and making it fit is a bit of a problem in any conventional way.

Obviously it needs sorting out a lot, but I'm pretty pleased that I've actually got the thing to fit at all. :wack:

All of the electrics inc alarm are in and tested apart from the engine loom and the alterations for the siliva front lights.
Ran the +ve cable from the battery to the front of the car where it goes into a distro box where the original +ve connectors connect up, ran the fuel lines and bolted a lot of other odds and sods on (wiper motor, washer bottle and pumps, pedals, steering column, etc).

The dash does go back in too which surpises me, thought it was going to be a proper twat to get it back in. I've taken it back out to run any other wiring such as AVCR, WI, gauges and wide band lambda.

Built the Kouki rear light loom with the help of Pete's write up.:)

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=31786

Moved the ABS and alterered the loom to accomodate it's new position.

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=31787

And a gratuitous pic of the finished oil cooler install, taking it out will be a wing off job, which means headlights and bumper too I think. :wack:

Loads more has happened since the post above, but most of it is tidying up of wiring, making things work properly - that kind of stuff, stuff that takes ages to do but looks like nothing have been achieved.

I'll take some new pics and get them posted soon.

Pete C
03-06-2007, 17:35
Awesome stuff Jezz

Reckon it'll get finished sometime this side of forever? :wack:

Jezz_S13
03-06-2007, 17:39
Yeah, should be done sometime this year LOL.

In reality it just needs the cosmetic bodywork sorting now to get it on the road, and I'm hoping to make some progress on that this week. :)

Can't wait to see this finished/in the flesh, Jezz. You going to take it along to a Welsh meet soon-ish? Might have to pop over the bridge :)

Jezz_S13
09-08-2007, 09:56
LOL yeah, was Jacko's and it's still rust free, but has been modded for the Kouki wing.

Looking really good dude - I'm tempted to seam weld mine, but im not sure if there is any advantage in doing so?

Jezz_S13

I'd be surprised if there isn't any advantage, but I dont have any annecdotal info regarding the S-chassis to verify it.

09-08-2007, 14:28
you could probably tell how much less flex there is with the old jack up one corner and open the door trick

It has a cage in it too so wouldn't really tell you anything; other than it's stiff (or not).

Was also strainge driving down the M4 with an S13 on the back, covered which can only be described as a parachute travelling along at 50mph.

I'm glad we stopped to peel it off as at least one of the pigs we past would have pulled us over!! lol.

i can jack my totally standard shell up on the corners and it will lift 3 wheels and the doors will still open fine, i think they are a good chassis as standard as long as its clean,

orject is coming allong nicely jezz, did you have that manifold made or is it a off the chelf one, im deffo going to be making myself one now i have a spare manifold to play with

Sideways Danny

i can jack my totally standard shell up on the corners and it will lift 3 wheels and the doors will still open fine, i think they are a good chassis as standard as long as its clean,

you can always open them, it's shutting them again thats the problem :wack: the standard shell is very bendy even good ones

SilviaS13
13-08-2007, 12:07
What engine mounts are they? Where from?

Jezz_S13
13-08-2007, 12:12
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissan-240SX-Engine-Mounts-S13-S14-Silvia-SR20DET-KA24_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ42609QQihZ015QQite mZ250152047600

They make everything rattle & shake a lot and the ally spacer didn't come with them, but they may not be necessary. I added the spacer because they dropped the engine too low compared to std mounts and I'd already had my exhaust d'pipe made.

SilviaS13
13-08-2007, 12:14
On CA18DE (no turbo) i have already got through 2 standard mounts. I hate to think what it will be like with SR20DET in there. I shall be getting some of those i think.
Is there a UK supplier- think i might of seen one before.

Jezz_S13
13-08-2007, 12:15
don't think there's a UK supplier, it looks like they make them thereselves.

I paid £44 all in to my door.

Did you manage to sort the RLTC out in the end ?

Jezz_S13
24-12-2007, 09:36
Not those kinds of bits. :D
Had an annoying squeak at the front, it seems to be the ARB bushes creaking. But have taken a loads of other bits off and managed to break something so waiting for the post man so I can fix it.
Also had a petrol issue, but that's pretty much been resolved now.

Sort of, had tapped into the wrong wire of the pair on 2 of the sensors.
I am getting loads of noise on another channel though, so need to look at it again.

Gah, most of the piccies are not working for mere mortals.

There's a RR graph in the power sticky thread at the top of the s13 tech section.
http://sxoc.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=4252868&postcount=135

New turbo (GT35R) should make that look a lot healthier WRT to both power and spool up, have both 0.63 and 0.82 housings to play with.

I've just changed the engine mounts and am running SR PFC (Djetro) now also splitfire coils from SR.
The SSAutoshite manifold fell to bits, so now have an Horsepower in box one.
Have ordered a better fuel pump, an 044, which I'm going to mount in tank.

Was running 2.4bar a few weeks ago, but my WG packed up the day before I was going to RR it again, so it's back to running ~2bar at the minute (what it was at the RR the graph is from).

nice bit of power there Jezz:thumbs:

Wondering......ur afr's are a bit upsy downy:wack:
Should they not be fairly flat once ur on full boost?

In my theory they should be, but im no mapper mate:)

Jezz_S13
27-12-2008, 08:07
They only move between 11 and 10.5 according to that graph and it sort of correlates to the boost spike (richer) and subsequent trough (leaner) that is evident if you look at the boost curve.

My Lambda reads 1 AFR point higher than that one, so between 12 and 11.5.
But yes you are right it possibly could be flatter, I mapped it the night before so was a bit of a rush. That map is long gone though, things have changed since then, and are about to change again when I fit the new pump and raise the pressure next week.

what other mods did you have to do to wiring/sensors to run the power fc from an sr then?

Jezz_S13
28-12-2008, 10:02
Nothing really for sensors (other than the djetro stuff and a bit of meddling for the SR coils and PTU), made an adaptor to convert from the CA ecu plug to the SR one.

Here's a thread all about it...

No, mapped it myself. More fun, innit. :D
Basically Kev I've been trying to map to as close to 12.5:1 as possible with the EGTs being reasonable, and safe knock of course - because of this the AFR may well bounce about a bit through the revs.

SM, yeah I was trying to get to 500 just for the RR day, but not sure it would have done as the compressor is getting inefficient according to the map at around 1.8bar; hence the need for the GT35R. Should see 450 at ~1.4bar with that, but it will still be reasonably happy at 2.4bar so plenty of scope to get to the high 500s or 600.

Kev
29-12-2008, 11:09
12.5:1 mate, u know i couldnt pin down in all my reading an "ideal" afr.
Wish id asked u, cos i went cautious with 10.5:1 at the higher revs.

Least now should be able to free up more gee gee's:thumbs:

Jezz_S13

~12.5 gives best torque (LBT Lean Best torque), but you'll struggle to maintain it at higher boost as EGTs will be rising.

Fuelling doesn't really make a huge difference to power - that graph shows it well. You only lose ~2% by going from 0.86 to 0.75 (12.6:1 to 11:1)

Pics of bellhousing to allow Toyota R154 to mate to the 4G63, and the gearbox mount.
Produced by a cool dude in the US, Bill Hincher whose help has been invaluable. He's done some great things to allow random gearboxes mount to various blocks, and a lot of work making the 4G63 work in a RWD config generally.

The intercooler piping on the cold side has been a bit of a concern as there's so little room. The pipe does have a tight bend in it (135deg), but the good news is that it's only 10" from the outlet of the intercooler to throttle body.

Fitted some GTR rear brakes.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/reargtrbrakes.jpg

The next biggish step was to get the box in so final positioning of everything could be established before any intercooler, coolant and exhaust pipework is made.
Stainless Steve has been instrumental in getting a lot of this done, and we spent another long day at Stef's place this week ad achieved a fair amount.

I love this shot, has something about it that make it look cool.

We made a brake line, not very exciting but was a bit awkward to get the bend radius tight enough to miss the plenum but without flattening or kinking the pipe.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/brakelines-01.jpg

The sump is a project in it's own right, here's where it's at now.
It ay not look exciting, but it's a lot of work. Steve hates it, but he's going a sterling job.
I didn't want the bottom of the bowl below the crossmember, so it's been shallowed a bit and a wing added to compensate.
It's also been modified so the back of the bowl clears the crossmember.
The plan is to baffle it in a way such that surge is avoided, first step is to make a top plate, this will be set at a height to just clear the crank & bigends.
I promise it'll look more interesting that this soon.
http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/sump-01.jpg

Finally a full frontal, albeit on the piss a bit due to having one odd wheel with a flat tyre on it.
The intercooler is going behind the slam panel etc because the Silvia front end is so shallow it won't fit without major butchery; putting it behind the slam panel allows us to make some half decent ducting; and I think the flow will be better through the IC where it is.

Thanks Jonny, I'd class it as dirty amateur car porn. :D

Here's a dirty home video, of the geeky sort, from when I was originally trying to get the DBW working; I've since done a better job of the calibration and am now using a Syvecs I/O expander with a full bridge driver to control the throttle body motor, rather than a half bridge driver module shown in the video.

Jonny, it's easy, you take all the gubbins out, wheel it to a body shop and leave it there for a while.
While they paint it you clean aforementioned gubbins.
Wheel it back after paint and screw it all back together. :)

Having another day on it on Friday to get some odds and sods done, will try to remember to take some piccies as I go.

Spent a few hours on the car today, had a few little but reasonably time consuming jobs to do, I mainly didn't take any pics.
Fitted some rear brake hoses, took the covers off my bucket seats to give them a wash, fiddled with the loom a bit then spent about 2 hours just looking as stuff working out how it might work.
The gear lever is ok, but a little high and a bit forward; I reckon can get stock positioning and work with all the stock gaiters etc with a bit of cutting and shutting.
Have been trying to work out where and how to mount the ECU and I/O expander.
I'm fitting a Toyota MRS Roadster electric PAS unit, so was looking how I could mount that in the N/S wing.
Took a few bits off so I can clean them up and paint them.

The pics I did take were of the throttle body which has been modified to make the hose seat diameter 90mm, it was 86mm before and that's not a std silicon hose size. So the TB casting was machined round, then a sleeve with a bead/swage made and sweated on. Even if there was an 86mm hose, the original bead on he casting only went about 250 degrees around the circumference, which would never hold 2.5 bar boost.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/throttle-body-01.jpg

I fitted the clutch line, took pics of that because it looks nice.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/clutchhose-02.jpg

Then my brakes arrived a few weeks earlier than expected, 356mm. I might go and try them on in the morning.

I take my hat off to you for the sheer amount of work, the real ground up build mate.

I think it's one of those things that everyone thinks they want to do, but major thumbs up for actually having the balls to do it.

I don't think I ever could just from the point of view of if I crashed it I might have to kill someone /myself lol.

That bell housing is cracking, be a shame to get it dirty lol.

I can see when it's finished it's gonna be one of those cars you see at a show where you can't go and look at one bit, cos there are soooo many cool bits, and some much lovely work, you have to see it all.

Glad your getting the drive back to attack it again mate.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Kev, some kind words there. :) This is kind of 2 projects, the original sil80 project was essentially finished, then I blew the engine up and it's the 4G swap that's been rumbling for 5 years. I'd have edited the title of the thread, but I'm a pleb now.
Trust me there's been times when it looked like it wouldn't get done, not that I've thought of getting rid of it, more that I couldn't see when i was going to get back on it, going pretty good now though and the end is (in relative terms) in sight now.

Anyway I was able to get down to the workshop and try the brakes on, my wheels are 17s, the brakes are 356; however in the end there was bags of clearance, about 6mm.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/brakes-on-02.jpg

I also took loads of pictures of the gear lever setup so that I can crack on with butchering it, so here's one of the old CA gearbox lever in the Toyota box, just need to make the Toyota lever (which is about a foot long LOL) look a bit like this, only about an inch further toward the back. I might cut/shut the two together.

plenty been going on, far more than there are pic's for.

The gear lever is finished, here's a pic of the hacked lever before it was finished and painted. I put it all together with the console and gaiter and the position and look is pretty much stock, which is nice.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/gearlever-02.jpg

I'm using the Toyota MR-S electric PAS pump, we've found somewhere for it and Steve has made one of the two brackets.
It works really well here; the hoses will join to the original hardpipes which will be cut & shut to take a -6AN fitting for the high pressure side, and swaged/flared on the low pressure side.
There was a danger that we'd have to mount inside the car, but TBH I didn't really want that.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/paspump-01.jpg

Ignore the big bolt sticking out, that's just temporary until a replacement of the right size arrives.

Mounted the brake T-piece splitter for the front brakes having ditched the ABS; and made the feed pipe today...

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/brakelines-02.jpg

We put the intake pipework all together, much glee that it goes together ok. Up until this point it looked like it would work but was was all a bit vague as the throttle body was held on with gaffer tape and I didn't have a joiner. The flange of the plenum has been drilled/tapped so the TB is now mounted properly.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/intake-finished-01.jpg

Oh I fitted a Hardrace gearbox mount too, the stock one was far too squishy. I don't have much clearance to the tunnel from the box, so not ideal to have a saggy mount.

I'm hoping to get the alternator and mounting bracket back soon (it's currently on my engine somewhere in middle England), I've a feeling that it might get in the way of the plenum; so that could be another unnecessary project. Once it's mounted the coolant pipes to the radiator can be made.

Power should be around 6-650 with the GT35.

Had a look at the intake piping. I can't do much with this until the turbo to intercooler hotpipe is finished, so haven't cut the silicon yet; but it's all good and looks like I'll be able to fit a huge filter in there. The one is the photo is 9" long, there's a 14" one which should fit.

I've ordered a new starter cable, because the starter is on the other side of the block, the std one is a couple of feet short. I've also ordered a great load of wire and other stuff to start the loom.
Christmas is Champagne and loom time, pics will follow. :D

I've been mostly making bits of the loom.

Electric PAS. This takes a speed input form the gearbox; It's a Toyota PAS pump, and I'm using a Toyota box so the loom for the PAS contains all the wiring to power and read the signal from the hall sensor on the gearbox. I don't use the gearbox speed sensor for the dash/ecu, I use average wheel speed for this form the ABS sensors
.

Knock sensor I'm using a bosch sensor rather than the stock 4g63 sensor, I've had to helicoil the block to take it from M10 to M8.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/loom-07.jpg

Fuel pressure sensor screwed into the FPR and ignition power transistors. I'm using S14 Splitfire coils, so am using the S14 and Splitfire power transistors.
I used this setup on my CA and it worked really well; so expect it'll work OK on the 4G.

As normal, a fair amount been getting done, but not many updates.

here's a few things..

An engine with some covers and pulleys, the pulley on the right is an idle to replace the PAS.
Bit of wire to measure the belt length.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/engine-04.jpg

We've had to modify the sock water pipe a lot, blanked some bits off, added a rad feed (where blue hose is attached) and on the left you can just see that the original rad feed has been reduced to feed the heater.
The bits were brazed on, it's gone to be plated today.

Clutch, quatermaster twin plate which was a bugger to line up without a tool and a broken lathe. Steve fixed the latch in the end and all was well.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/200sx/evo-swap/install/final-build/clutch-01big.jpg

I'm using SR20 Splitfire coils, Steve made a bracket to hold then nice and snug. The best bit is that the stock coil cover still fits so looks factory, as long as they don't start overheating...

Cheers Pete, best slowest project ever, maybe? :)

Did my ignition and injection testing today, that was all good and all in the right order.

The rad fans didn't work though, relays are latching but the plugs to the fan are a bit corroded. Easy fix.
Electric PAS relay isn't latching though, that's a bit of a bum as it's overly complicated. It was working before I decided to use the ECU control it so that it can't start (and drain battery) before the engine is running and the battery voltage at a healthy level, i.e. alternator working.

Will sort it all and get the dash all sorted next week.

It's nearly finished, comparatively.
Might finish it before I'm 44.

Had a few hours on it today, fans working and got the remaining loom wiring for the fan relays finished.
Electric PAS, I know what needs doing to make it work, need to get some bits. The control unit for it is a bit fussy so need to work around it.
Tested some more ECU output functions, and calibrated the G sensors.
Started sorting some of the interior wiring for gauges, switches etc. Need to order some bits.

So, I've been looking at setting up flat shifting/gear cut using the clutch as a trigger, should I go drag racing to keep the boost up and the shifts fast.
I had a simple (brake) switch on the pedal but found that i drive with my foot on the pedal, and the little bit of lash in the pedal meant the switch was being activated even though the clutch is engaged, resulting in all sorts of unwanted pops and bangs.
I stumbled across a post in a FB group where someone said use the fork for more accuracy, so I took it a bit further and got a position sensor and used that, with this i can configure my ECU with the exact point (voltage threshold) the clutch is disengaged. Meaning the gear cut is only active whilst the clutch is disengaged.

Geeky, but cool.

A bit more geek.
The fuel pump doesn't need to running full chat all the time, needlessly heating up the fuel and making a load of noise so I've connected and mapped a Jaguar F-Type fuel pump controller (Same used in a few cars XFR, XKR, Aston Martins).
This takes a PWM signal from the ECU and runs the pump at the required duty for the boost/load demand.

Straight from the scrappers, £30, there's a place in NZ selling 'reconditioned' ones for ~£250

Needed some headwork with a scope to work out how it works...

Great Stuff Jezz, both cool ideas.

I could actually do with a pump controller too, so you just worked out what it was doing on the pico scope and hooked it up to the relevant relays needed, no actual software changes?

Can you make me one? :wack: :D

Jezz_S13
20-04-2019, 11:58
The controller is controlled by the ECU (Syvecs in my case), your ECU needs to have a PWM fuel pump strategy and spare TTL (ignition) output; though you can make it work with a normal output but it reverses the duty, ignition outputs are active high, normal outputs go to ground when active. The Jag controller is expecting active high.
The jag controller is a bit odd.
It takes a 100hz signal input, and gives a 20kHz output to the pump. The duty of the input signal is roughly doubled, 4% input duty is roughly 8% pump duty, 49% input is ~98% pump. Below 4% or above ~52% input tuns the output/pump off.

I actually use 2 fuel pump outputs, one to turn on the relay which powers up the controller, and the other to do the PWM control.

If you could find a device which will take a 5v input and convert that to a PWM signal then you could hook it up to your MAP sensor. This sort of device does exist.

There's a post (4th from the end) on the page linked below by AlexjC4 which inspired me to check the jag unit out.
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=66&t=916550&i=320

You could alternatively use a Solid State Relay and diode etc, but I seen some mixed reviews. Consensus seems to be to avoid cheap ones.
I will probably use one or two SSRs to control my cooling fans, the instantaneous load of the fans starting upsets the idle a bit, so if I can feed them in gradually and at a duty proportional to engine temp then it'd be much better.

Pablo13
23-04-2019, 22:07
Thanks for the info, having checked I do seem to have a PWM signal from my stock ECU but its 0 to 5v, no mention of hz. Maybe it would be simpler to get a controller from the original vehicle. Anyway, cheers for shedding light on the subject

So i've fitted a ZF 8HP auto gearbox to the rusty Datsun.
It had its challenges, mainly that no one makes an adapter/fly/flexplate for the 4G63, so I bought a 3D printer learnt CAD and designed and prototyped one in plastic; then TTV Racing made the proper one for me.

I'm using HTG GCU to control it, BMW shifter, and Freewheel/Blinkstop flappy paddles and buttons.

Well would you look at that, that is impressive stuff. I bet that was a project and a half. How's the box behave?

At least give us some up to date pictures of the car in general.

Yeah, all good here mate, discovered working on my own cars was shit so pay other people to do it now, currently smoking about in a V10 Phaeton, 2014 Z28, 2ZZ MR2, 135i coupe and horror of horrors an Audi etron*
Also managed to flip an F355 into a field in Scotland last year, exciting!

Did your S13 turn out how you wanted then? Is it quick mister?

*Its actually really good, what has happened to me .......

Flipping a Ferrari is careless, but an immense buzz I'd imagine.

S13 still not turned out as hoped, but goalposts change; quite fancying a destroked R32 (VAG) lump, big powers.
It's reasonably quick.

It drives surprisingly well, as it's a pretty complicated thing. Needs more work on the calibration, shift points etc.

First job is to take the valve block assy out, smash the stock TCU out with a chisel after grinding the lid off it, then rewiring it.

So I've just watched some videos from RaceOnlyGarage in the US on a 20B RX7 with this 7 speed box fitted.

Now we absolutely need to see this moving Jezz. Holy actual heck.
